Human maxillary sinuses augmented with mineralized, solvent-dehydrated bone allograft: a longitudinal case series.

BACKGROUND: This prospective case series aimed to assess the clinical stability of maxillary sinus floors regenerated with mineralized, solvent-dehydrated bone allograft (MSDBA) and restored with dental implants after at least 5 years of function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven sinuses in 7 patients (4 bilateral) were augmented with 50% cortical and 50% cancellous MSDBA (Puros, Zimmer Dental Italy srl, Vittorio Veneto, Treviso, Italy). After a mean healing period of 8.1 months, a total of 11 bone specimens (1 per sinus graft) were retrieved and 25 implants were placed. Bone samples were analyz

Laser as an Adjunct in Endodontic Treatment in Dogs: Perspectives on a Conservative, Effective, and Safe Approach.

Crown fractures and subsequent pulp necrosis are common clinical findings in veterinary dental practice. While conventional endodontic therapy typically yields favorable outcomes, light therapies, such as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), have emerged as promising adjuncts for enhancing disinfection and tissue repair. However, standardized protocols for these therapies in veterinary dentistry remain scarce. This clinical case report describes the management of a maxillary incisor with pulp necrosis secondary to a coronal fracture in a dog. Followi

CD68 and F4/80 Markers Demonstrate Inflammatory Synergism Between Apical Periodontitis and Liver Fibrosis in Wistar Rats.

AIM: To evaluate CD68 and F4/80 glycoproteins in the worsening of apical periodontitis (AP) and liver fibrosis (LF) in Wistar rats. METHODOLOGY: Thirty-two Wistar rats were distributed in the following groups (n = 8): C-control; AP-apical periodontitis; LF-liver fibrosis; APLF-AP and LF. LF was induced by carbon tetrachloride administration for 8 weeks and surgical bile duct ligation; AP was induced by the exposure of the dental pulp to the oral environment for 30 days. Mandibles and livers were removed after euthanasia. The histological and immunohistochemical analysis of CD68 and F4/80 glyc

Persistent submental fistula of odontogenic origin initially misdiagnosed as non-dental pathology - a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent cutaneous fistulas of dental origin without intraoral symptoms can be diagnostically challenging, particularly when first assessed by non-dental clinicians. These fistulas are frequently misdiagnosed and inappropriately treated before the underlying dental cause is identified. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 65-year-old female patient with a persistent submental fistula that had been unsuccessfully treated by several medical disciplines over several months. Initial conservative and surgical approaches failed to resolve the lesion. Dental examination reveale

Prevalence of Pulp Stones on Panoramic Radiographs in Patients with Chronic Systemic Diseases: A Cross-sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Pulp stones (PS) are incidental, mostly asymptomatic, radiographic findings that may hinder endodontic therapy. They are observed as radiopaque aggregates within coronal or radicular pulp tissue on intraoral periapical, bite-wing, panoramic radiographs and cone-beam computed tomography images. This study aimed to evaluate PS prevalence in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes mellitus (DM), and chronic periodontitis (CP) as compared with controls, as a function of age and sex. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 200 subjects: 50 healthy contr

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma in the mandibular gingiva: a rare case report with literature review.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a locally aggressive vascular tumor in neonates and children. KHE can occur anywhere in the body, but occurrence in the oral cavity is exceptionally rare. The clinical features of KHE are similar to those of oral lesions, such as infantine hemangioma, pyogenic granuloma, and chronic periodontitis. However, unlike other oral lesions, KHE invades neighboring tissue planes and recurs frequently as malignancy. Moreover, some instances of KHE are accompanied by a life-threatening condition named Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. Correct diagnosis of KHE is very d

Evaluation of Clinical and Radiographic Parameters as Dental Indicators for Postmenopausal Osteoporosis.

PURPOSE: In the early stages, osteoporosis is relatively a silent disease characterised by low bone density with microarchitectural deterioration of the bone tissue leading to enhanced bone fragility. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between age, body mass index, oral signs, and osteoporosis among postmenopausal women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included postmenopausal women who were divided into two groups of subjects. The osteoporotic group comprised 30 patients with osteoporosis who were diagnosed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and the non-osteopo

Surgical Treatment of a Cemental Tear-Associated Bony Defect Using Hyaluronic Acid and a Resorbable Collagen Membrane: A 2-Year Follow-Up.

INTRODUCTION: A cemental tear (CeT) is a special type of surface root fracture that may cause periodontal and even periapical tissue destruction. Unfortunately, there is limited knowledge as to how these rare cases can effectively be treated. The present case is believed to be the first reported in the literature treating a bony defect caused by a cemental tear with hyaluronic acid (HA) and a collagen membrane. The aim of this case report is to present a regenerative surgical approach with clinical and tomographic success and stability at 2-year follow-up. CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old pat

Treatment of Severe Chronic Periodontitis with Surgical and Prosthetic Intervention: A 9-year Follow-up Case Report.

A 60-year-old woman presented with the chief complaint of mobility of tooth #16. Gingival swelling and calculus were observed. Clinical examination revealed that 49.4% of sites had a probing depth (PD) of ≥4 mm and 72% of sites bleeding on probing. Radiographic examination revealed vertical bone resorption in #35 and horizontal resorption in other regions. Periapical region radiolucency on #16 and 27 suggested a perio-endo lesion. The clinical diagnosis was severe chronic periodontitis. Initial periodontal therapy mainly comprised the following: oral hygiene instruction; quadrant scaling and r

Electronic root canal length measurement before and after experimentally induced pulpitis and apical periodontitis in dogs.

The aim of the study was to examine the influence of the state of the pulp and apical periodontium on the results of electronic root canal length measurement (ERCLM) with a resistance measuring device in dogs. Pulpitis and apical periodontitis were induced by pulp exposure and contamination by the oral flora in the premolar teeth of six mongrel dogs, comprising four experimental groups (36 root canals). In a control group, measured lengths of teeth with uninfected pulps were performed on the first experimental day (44 root canals). In all animals the ERCLMs were performed on teeth with healthy

Apical infection spreading to adjacent teeth: a case report.

This case report describes apical infection on tooth number 24 that spread to adjacent teeth, resulting in devitalized teeth numbers 23 and 25. The 25-year-old Caucasian female patient was referred to the endodontic resident clinic because of uncontrolled apical infection. Root-end surgery and root-end filling of teeth numbers 23, 24, and 25 were performed. The histopathological diagnosis was a periapical cyst; however, the clinical surgical finding of a purulence-filled bone cavity also revealed a periapical abscess. After root-end surgery and regenerative therapy using Mineral Trioxide Aggre

Perforating external root resorption with periodontal-derived osseous ingrowth: a radiographic mimic of internal replacement resorption.

OBJECTIVE: Intraradicular mixed radiolucent and radiopaque changes within the root canal space are often diagnosed as internal replacement resorption. However, radiographs alone cannot confirm tissue origin or periodontal-endodontic communication. This study examined whether perforating external root resorption can establish a trans-radicular portal, permit periodontal-derived osseous ingrowth, and produce a radiographic mimic of internal replacement resorption. METHODS: This observational clinico-radiographic and histomorphological correlation study analysed 97 extracted permanent teeth in t

Partial radicular versus coronal pulpotomy using chitosan and platelet-rich fibrin in vital permanent molars with irreversible pulpitis, with or without associated apical periodontitis: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Recent developments in biologically oriented dentistry have encouraged preservation of pulpal tissue even in cases traditionally managed with root canal therapy (RCT). Evidence suggests that in many teeth diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis, the inflammatory process may not involve the entire pulp, allowing retention of viable radicular tissue through conservative procedures such as pulpotomy. Partial radicular pulpotomy is a conservative approach that requires further clinical validation. AIM: To comparatively evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of coronal and partia

COVID-19 and oral diseases: Assessing manifestations of a new pathogen in oral infections.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a recently identified virus responsible for life-threatening coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19). The SARS-CoV-2 infected subjects can be asymptomatic or symptomatic; the later may present a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations. However, the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on oral diseases remain poorly studied. Detection of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva indicates existence of virus in the oral cavity. Recent studies demonstrating the expression of ACE-2, a SARS-CoV-2 entry receptor, in oral tissues further strengthens this observation. Cytokine st
