Single Tire-Derived Pollutant (6-PPD) Exposure Triggers Lung Injury and Mitochondrial Disruption in Mice.

N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6-PPD) is a widely used tire antiozonant that has recently emerged as a global environmental concern. Although its aquatic toxicity is well documented, its respiratory toxicity in mammals remains poorly understood. We aimed to characterize the temporal progression of 6-PPD-induced pulmonary injury and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms, with a focus on mitochondrial homeostasis. A single exposure to 6-PPD (10 or 25mg/kg) in mice induced rapid-onset pulmonary edema and neutrophilic inflammation, peaking within 24-48h. Although 6-PPD

10-year time course of Hg and organic compounds in Augusta Bay: Bioavailability and biological effects in marine organisms.

In the last century, many Mediterranean coastal areas have been subjected to anthropogenic disturbances from industrial activities, uncontrolled landfills, shipyards, and high maritime traffic. The Augusta Bay (eastern Sicily, Italy) represents an example of a strongly impacted coastal environment with an elevated level of sediments contamination due to the presence of one of the largest European petrochemical plants, combined with an extensive commercial and military harbor. The most significant contaminants were represented by mercury (Hg) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB), derived from a former c

Insect-derived biochar-organically modified vermiculite composite enabling synergistic adsorption and analysis of insecticides in water samples.

BACKGROUND: The widespread application of insecticides has raised concerns about environmental persistence and risks to non-target organisms, calling for efficient adsorbents and reliable analytical methods for residue monitoring. Biomass-derived carbon-based materials show promise but often suffer from limited capacity and poor reusability. While biochar-clay composites and organically modified clays have been studied separately for pollutant removal, their integration into a synergistic adsorption system remains largely unexplored. RESULTS: A novel insect-derived biochar-organically modifie

g-C3N4-based hybrid photocatalysts for removal of emerging pharmaceutical pollutants from water: recent advances, degradation pathways, toxicity assessment, and future perspectives.

Pharmaceutical pollutants (PPs) are increasingly detected in aquatic environments, raising concerns about their persistence and potential risks to human health and ecosystems. Advanced oxidation processes based on photocatalysis have been widely developed to remove PPs and mitigate their negative effects. Recently, the metal-free photocatalyst graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has received increasing attention for environmental remediation due to its good chemical stability, non-toxicity, simple synthesis, and high removal efficiency. However, the application of g-C3N4 is still limited by rapi

Mercury exposure and children's health.

Acute or chronic mercury exposure can cause adverse effects during any period of development. Mercury is a highly toxic element; there is no known safe level of exposure. Ideally, neither children nor adults should have any mercury in their bodies because it provides no physiological benefit. Prenatal and postnatal mercury exposures occur frequently in many different ways. Pediatricians, nurses, and other health care providers should understand the scope of mercury exposures and health problems among children and be prepared to handle mercury exposures in medical practice. Prevention is the ke

Perfluorohexane sulfonate exposure caused multiple developmental abnormalities in early life of zebrafish.

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) has been listed as a new persistent organic pollutant since 2022. Although the production and use of PFHxS are now restricted, it remains highly persistent in aquatic environments for decades. However, so far research about the toxic effects on early-life exposure of PFHxS and underlying mechanisms are still limited. In this study, we employed both wild type and specifically labeled transgenic zebrafish as model to investigate the developmental toxicity of PFHxS during early-stage exposure in zebrafish. A series of phenotypic and molecular indicators were anal

Dynamics of Soil Microbial Communities During Diazepam and Oxazepam Biodegradation in Soil Flooded by Water From a WWTP.

The demand for energy and chemicals is constantly growing, leading to an increase of the amounts of contaminants discharged to the environment. Among these, pharmaceutical molecules are frequently found in treated wastewater that is discharged into superficial waters. Indeed, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are designed to remove organic pollution from urban effluents but are not specific, especially toward contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), which finally reach the natural environment. In this context, it is important to study the fate of micropollutants, especially in a soil aquifer

Photoelectrochemical interface mediated by S-scheme charge transfer and p-n heterojunction: Ultrasensitive detection of the emerging contaminant ornidazole.

Ornidazole (ONZ) is a widely used nitroimidazole-class antibiotic whose environmental persistence due to misuse intensifies antimicrobial resistance and accelerates pathogen evolution, posing serious risks to human health and ecological safety. To address this issue, we developed a novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor for ultrasensitive ONZ detection based on a p-n heterojunction between pseudobrookite-type oxide MgTi2O5 and the metal-organic framework (MOF) Cu-BTC. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborate the favorable band structure of the heterojunction. The built-in elec

PFOS sub-chronic exposure selectively activates Aβ clearance pathway to improve the cognitive ability of AD mice.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), an emerging persistent organic pollutant, has been controversial in its impact on cognitive functions. Our previous research has confirmed that the sub-chronic PFOS exposure leads to neuronal apoptosis in the cerebral cortex, impairing cognitive functions in normal mice. However, our current study presents a surprising finding: sub-chronic exposure to PFOS effectively reduces cognitive impairments in Alzheimer's disease (AD) mice and significantly retards the disease's progression. Our results indicate that PFOS exposure upregulates the expression level of ins

Perfluorooctanoic Acid-Disturbed Serum and Liver Lipidome in C57BL/6 Mice.

Perfluorooctanoic acid is a manufactured material extensively utilized in industrial and consumer products. As a persistent organic pollutant, perfluorooctanoic acid has raised increasing public health concerns recently. Although perfluorooctanoic acid is known to induce lipid accumulation in the liver, the impact of perfluorooctanoic acid on different lipid classes has not been fully evaluated. In this study, we performed untargeted lipidomics analysis to investigate the impact of perfluorooctanoic acid on the lipid homeostasis in C57BL/6 male mice. Perfluorooctanoic acid disturbed the lipid

Effects of different culture media on biodegradation of triclosan by Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Penicillium sp.

Triclosan is an antimicrobial agent and a persistent pollutant. The biodegradation of triclosan is dependent on many variables including the biodegradation organism and the environmental conditions. Here, we evaluated the triclosan degradation potential of two fungi strains, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Penicillium sp., and the rate of its turnover to 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). Both of these strains showed less susceptibility to triclosan when grown in minimal salt medium. In order to further evaluate the effects of environmental conditions on triclosan degradation, three different culture

Responses to oxidative and heavy metal stresses in cyanobacteria: recent advances.

Cyanobacteria, the only known prokaryotes that perform oxygen-evolving photosynthesis, are receiving strong attention in basic and applied research. In using solar energy, water, CO2 and mineral salts to produce a large amount of biomass for the food chain, cyanobacteria constitute the first biological barrier against the entry of toxics into the food chain. In addition, cyanobacteria have the potential for the solar-driven carbon-neutral production of biofuels. However, cyanobacteria are often challenged by toxic reactive oxygen species generated under intense illumination, i.e., when their p

Outbreaks of Salmonella newport infection in dairy herds and their relationship to management and contamination of the environment.

Two outbreaks of Salmonella newport infection in dairy herds are described which were characterised by haemorrhagic enteritis. The history of the outbreaks, the extent of the losses, clinical and laboratory findings and treatment are described. The first herd consisted of 193 cattle, of which seven died, three aborted and another 84 required treatment. Salmonellosis persisted over 14 months throughout the summer on a paddock grazing system and continued during the following winter when the herd was loose housed. The relationship of the commencement of clinical disease to dietary changes and to

Cation-Mediated Interface Engineering Directs Electrogenerated Reactive Oxygen Species Pathways.

Persistent organic contaminants are increasingly accumulating in saline waters, where high ionic strength and complex electrolytes hinder oxidative remediation. Electrogenerated reactive oxygen species (ROS) offer a promising route for pollutant degradation, yet the role of electrolyte cations in controlling ROS pathways remains poorly understood. Although singlet oxygen (1O2) is more persistent and matrix-tolerant than hydroxyl radicals (•OH), whether cation-induced changes in interfacial water structure govern ROS selectivity remains unclear. Here, using atomically dispersed Cu on Fe2O3-carb

Atmospheric Particulate Matter as a Carrier of Pb, Cd, and Ni: From Environmental Transfer and Bioaccessibility to Molecular Toxicity and Predictive Modeling.

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is a heterogeneous carrier of toxic metals whose environmental fate and biological effects depend on particle size, source-related composition, chemical form, solubility, and bioaccessibility. Lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and nickel (Ni) are of particular concern because atmospheric transport and deposition connect air pollution with persistent contamination of soils, vegetation, waters, sediments, food, and feed, followed by human and animal exposure. This review integrates evidence across a source-to-effect continuum encompassing emission, atmospheric transpor

Short-term exposure to ciprofloxacin and microplastic leads to intrahepatic cholestasis, while long-term exposure decreases energy metabolism and increases the risk of obesity.

Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics are pervasive pollutants that may pose a risk to human health. Studies have shown that both MPs and antibiotics adversely affect lipid metabolism and increase the risk of obesity. However, it remains unclear whether combined exposure to these pollutants intensify the cumulative detrimental effect on obesity and metabolism. This study demonstrated the impact of exposure to polystyrene MPs (PS, 25 nm) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), both individually and combined, for 30 d and 90 d on the hepatic metabolism of male C57BL/6J mice. The results showed that mice exposed

Green and sustainable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in wastewater treatment: A review.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess unique structural, physical, and chemical properties, making them promising materials for wastewater treatment applications, particularly in photocatalysis. However, conventional synthesis methods suffer from drawbacks such as toxic raw materials, high costs, instability, and time-consuming processes. Addressing these issues, there is an increasing demand for sustainable, eco-friendly, stable, recyclable, and cost-effective methods to produce green and sustainable MOFs. This review explores recent progress in the sustainable synthesis of MOFs and their p

Metabolomic-Based Comparison of Daphnia magna and Japanese Medaka Responses After Exposure to Acetaminophen, Diclofenac, and Ibuprofen.

Pharmaceuticals are found in aquatic environments due to their widespread use and environmental persistence. To date, a range of impairments to aquatic organisms has been reported with exposure to pharmaceuticals; however, further comparisons of their impacts across different species on the molecular level are needed. In the present study, the crustacean Daphnia magna and the freshwater fish Japanese medaka, common model organisms in aquatic toxicity, were exposed for 48 h to the common analgesics acetaminophen (ACT), diclofenac (DCF), and ibuprofen (IBU) at sublethal concentrations. Hydroxyl radical chemistry in advanced oxidation processes: a cross-system mechanistic framework and catalyst design perspectives.

Hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) are widely recognized as the most powerful oxidizing species in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and play a central role in the degradation of persistent organic contaminants. However, current understanding of ˙OH chemistry remains fragmented because radical generation is typically interpreted within technology-specific frameworks, limiting cross-system mechanistic understanding and catalyst development. This review establishes a unified framework for ˙OH generation across AOPs and demonstrates that diverse technologies can be interpreted through three recurring mech

Dynamics of changes in cadmium levels in environmental objects and its impact on the bio-elemental composition of living organisms.

As a result of intensive anthropogenic impact in the biosphere there is a rapid process of accumulation of heavy metal salts. They have led to the aggravation of problems associated with the pollution of ecosystems and basic food products of plant and animal origin. Environmental pollution by these compounds is caused by their persistence in environmental objects, migration ability, accumulation by plants. This contributes to their accumulation in the human environment. A number of studies have shown that heavy metals have mutagenic, toxic effects and affect the intensity of biochemical proces
