Differentiation of Self and Interpersonal Functioning with the Level of Personality Functioning Scale - Brief Form 2.0.

Research on Criterion A of the alternative model for personality disorders is recently expanding and provides mixed results concerning the unidimensional operational definition of severity by the model, characterized by impaired self (identity and self-direction) and interpersonal (empathy and intimacy) functioning. Studies resulted in one, as well as two or more factor structures. The present study demonstrated the importance of the structural and relational differentiation of self and interpersonal dimensions of personality functioning. One thousand seventy-four participants (community and c

Toward a More Nuanced Perspective on Detachment: Differentiating Schizoid and Avoidant Personality Styles through Qualities of the Self-Representation.

Avoidant personality disorder was introduced in DSM-III (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1980), and debate persists regarding the utility of having two separate variants of the "detached personality." The present study addressed this issue through ratings of open-ended self-descriptions provided by community adults with high scores on schizoid versus avoidant personality traits (N = 229). The self-concept of individuals with avoidant personality style reflected a lack of positive self-regard and low self-efficacy/agency. Regarding schizoid personalities, neither positive nor negative s

The association between gambling pathology and personality disorders.

Research supports increased risk of problem gambling (PG) and pathological gambling disorder (PGD) among individuals with substance abuse/dependence and psychiatric disorders, but studies considering personality disorder comorbidity have not adjusted for confounding relationships with other Axis I disorders. Using targeted advertising, we enrolled 153 gamblers (55% female; 32% minority; Mean age=47; SD=18.2) in a clinical validation study of the newly developed computerized gambling assessment module (C-GAM). For these analyses, we classified gamblers into three groups based on their endorseme

Three-year follow-up of women with the sole diagnosis of depressive personality disorder: subsequent development of dysthymia and major depression.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to determine whether subjects with the sole diagnosis of depressive personality disorder are at higher risk for developing dysthymia and major depression than are healthy comparison subjects. METHOD: Eighty-five women with depressive personality disorder who had no comorbid axis I or axis II disorders and 85 age-matched healthy comparison women were initially recruited and reinterviewed 3 years later to evaluate the cumulative incidence rate of dysthymia and major depression. RESULTS: At the 3-year follow-up assessment, the women with depressive personality diso

[Relations Between Rape Myths and Behavioral and Personality Characteristics in Males Convicted of Rape].

OBJECTIVE: To date the relationships between rape myths and other psychological constructs within males who have committed rape have not been explored sufficiently. Considered as a risk factor for the perpetration of rape it seems significant to examine their association to individual behavioral and personality characteristics more in detail. METHODS: Therefore, we analyzed the relations between self-reported rape myth acceptance and the self-evaluation of aggressiveness, assertiveness, hypersexuality, social anxiety, sexual anxiety, SCID personality characteristics and the external assessmen

Personality profile and its association with conversion to neurodegenerative disorders in idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) were described less extraverted and more neurotic. It remained unclear whether similar personality traits could be found in idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD), a prodromal stage of PD, and could predict phenoconversion to neurodegenerative disorders. We aimed to investigate the personality profile and its association with future neurodegenerative phenoconversion in iRBD patients. One hundred and eighty-five video-polysomnography confirmed iRBD patients and 91 age- and sex-matched controls underwent personality assessment using th…

French version of the Inventory of Personality Organization (IPO-fr): psychometric properties in young adults.

BACKGROUND: The Inventory of Personality Organization (IPO) is a self-assessment instrument designed to measure the level of personality organization. In the present study, we developed and validated a French version (IPO-fr) of this instrument in a population of young adults. Its validity was established on the basis of two studies examining (1) its internal structure, and (2) its convergent validity with the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4+, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the Aggression Questionnaire (AQ). Long-term trajectories of posttraumatic stress disorder in veterans: the role of social resources.

OBJECTIVE: Because of the potential treatment implications, it is clinically important to distinguish between bipolar II depression and major depressive disorder with comorbid borderline personality disorder. The high frequency of diagnostic co-occurrence and resemblance of phenomenological features has led some authors to suggest that borderline personality disorder is part of the bipolar spectrum. Few studies have directly compared patients with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. In the present study from the Rhode Island Methods to Improve Diagnostic Assessment and Servic

Testing of significant changes in big-five personality factors over time in the presence and absence of memory impairment and life-related stress.

This study tests whether memory impairment and perceived increases in stress due to life changes independently contribute to similar personality changes, such as increased neuroticism and decreased conscientiousness. Longitudinal data from 12,912 participants aged 50+ from the Health and Retirement Study (2006-2020) were analyzed using Latent Growth Curve Models (LGCMs). Six LGCMs were simultaneously estimated to examine how changes in personality across three data points spanning 8 years are predicted by both the classification of memory impairment (MI) statuses assessed via the Telephone Int

Interpersonal Problem Profiles of Personality and Psychopathology Constructs in Chinese Undergraduates and Offenders.

The interpersonal problem circumplex is extensively used in the field as an assessment framework for understanding the interpersonal implications of a range of personality and psychopathology constructs. The vast majority of this large literature has been conducted in Western convenience and clinical samples. We computed interpersonal problem structural summary parameters for a range of personality and psychopathology variables in two Chinese offender samples (N = 424 and N = 555) and one undergraduate sample (N = 511) to test how well findings from Western samples generalize to Chinese underg

Agreeable smellers and sensitive neurotics--correlations among personality traits and sensory thresholds.

Correlations between personality traits and a wide range of sensory thresholds were examined. Participants (N = 124) completed a personality inventory (NEO-FFI) and underwent assessment of olfactory, trigeminal, tactile and gustatory detection thresholds, as well as examination of trigeminal and tactile pain thresholds. Significantly enhanced odor sensitivity in socially agreeable people, significantly enhanced trigeminal sensitivity in neurotic subjects, and a tendency for enhanced pain tolerance in highly conscientious participants was revealed. It is postulated that varied sensory processin

Psychosocial functioning in personality disorders.

The present paper takes a broad perspective on the psychosocial functioning in adult patients with personality disorders. We start with a working definition, then we report on psychosocial functioning in personality disorders from both categorical and dimensional perspectives of personality disorder. We add a section on assessment tools which may be used in this context. We then address the question of how problematic psychosocial functioning may be addressed in psychotherapy and other treatment contexts, when it comes to supporting the person's move towards sustained recovery. We add a lived

The criterion validity of general and antisocial personality disorder-specific criterion A in the alternative model of personality disorders: A scoping review and meta-analysis.

The alternative model for personality disorders include two-dimensional criteria: self and interpersonal dysfunction (Criterion A) and maladaptive personality traits (Criterion B). Criterion A is appraised using the Levels of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS). Personality disorder-specific impairments are also described. This scoping review and meta-analysis evaluates the criterion validity of self-report and observer-rated LPFS measures, and two antisocial personality disorder (ASPD)-specific measures, in assessing Criterion A for ASPD, psychopathy, antisocial behavior, and aggression. Advancing understanding of the relation between criterion a of the alternative model for personality disorders and hierarchical taxonomy of psychopathology: Insights from an external validity analysis.

Increasing interest surrounds the relation between Level of Personality Functioning (LPF), as defined by Criterion A of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders, and the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) model. However, the integration of LPF within HiTOP remains unclear. Using bivariate correlation and linear regression analyses, this study assessed the associations between LPF and HiTOP spectra (externalizing antisocial, externalizing drug use, internalizing, antagonism, detachment, and psychoticism). A sample of 1,183 participants (46.2% female, Mage = 31.3 ± 14.8 year

Assessment and Treatment of Attachment-Related Aspects in Adolescents with Personality Disorders In recent years the relevance of attachment-related aspects in psychotherapy research has increased. This approach offers an opportunity to test the effectiveness of specific psychotherapeutic procedures for personality disorders in adulthood. Although there are a number of novel psychotherapeutic interventions for personality disorders that were adapted for adolescents, there is still a lack of research on studies that consider attachment-related characteristics. The present study demonstrates att
