Personality dynamics of adolescent boys where the father was absent.

The effects of substitute adult male role-models were examined for 60 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 years. Significant mean differences were found on Depression, Hypochondriasis, and Suspiciousness scales of the MMPI and Guilt and Assaultiveness of the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory. Interpretation of scores showed that fatherless boys who had substitute male role-models were similar in personality to boys with fathers. Adolescent boys without fathers and from lower socioeconomic families were significantly more similar in personality to young offenders.

Genetic transmission and improved diagnosis of schizophrenia from pedigrees of adoptees.

In previous investigations of the prevalence of schizophrenic illness among the biological relatives of schizophrenic adoptees in Copenhagen and the remainder of Denmark, the operation of heritable spectrum illness was clearly implicated. The findings supporting that conclusion are briefly summarized. Classical chronic schizophrenia was found almost exclusively in the biological relatives of chronic schizophrenic probands and its prevalence was ten times greater than that in the biological relatives of controls. These were global diagnoses, made without knowledge of the relationships and famil

Factors affecting the grieving process after perinatal loss.

BACKGROUND: Factors associated with the grief process in response to perinatal loss have been investigated. However, few studies focused on the intrapersonal factors, such as developmental and personality traits. Hence, this study aimed to investigate medical and psychosocial risk factors, including inter- and intrapersonal factors for the development of complicated grief following perinatal loss, while considering emotional support. METHODS: A total of 50 patients who were treated for grief due to perinatal loss at the National Center for Child Health and Development were divided into two gr

Factor analysis in personality disorders research: Modern issues and illustrations of practical recommendations.

The development of factor analysis is uniquely situated within psychology, and the development of many psychological theories and measures are likewise tethered to the common use of factor analysis. In this article, we review modern methodological controversies and developments of factor analytic techniques through concrete demonstrations that span the exploratory-confirmatory continuum. Also, we provide recommendations for working through common challenges in personality disorders research. To help researchers conduct riskier tests of their theory-implied models, we review what factor analysi

Psychobiological screening among patients affected by prostate cancer: Identification of potential psychobiological markers.

Prostate cancer is a common oncological disease of old age with the highest rates of incidence among males older than 65 years old. Diagnosis and treatment may be associated with the onset of adjustment, depressive, and anxiety disorders. The comorbidity with depression and anxiety may lead to a higher risk of suicide, and mortality as well as lower adherence to medical treatments and adverse functional outcomes in patients affected by urologic cancers. The role of genetic vulnerability and pre-morbid personality in predicting the development of mental disorders during cancer disease is debate

A comprehensive sexual health care program for educable intellectually disabled adolescent girls: protocol for a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Protection and promotion of sexual health is of great importance for educable intellectually disabled adolescent girls; since they are prone to high risk sexual vulnerabilities and consequences, such as unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Although the rights of intellectually disabled adolescents have been emphasized through the recent years, their sexual health care is still a challenge for parents, teachers, caregivers, and service providers. This study aims to present a comprehensive sexual health care program for educabl

Relation between differential emotions and depression in emotionally disturbed children and adolescents.

Differential emotions theory (Izard, 1972) provides a conceptual framework for the role of emotions in affective disorders. The present study investigated the relation of emotions to depression in a sample of child and adolescent psychiatric inpatients (N = 145). Findings indicate that shyness, anger, enjoyment, and shame explained 51.4% of the variance in depression scores. Furthermore, profiles of emotions experienced by youths with a depressive disorder differed significantly from emotion profiles of nondepressed youths on the following emotions: enjoyment, surprise, sadness, anger, shame,

Tourette syndrome: relation to children's and parents' self-concepts.

We investigated the self-concepts of Tourette Syndrome patients and their mothers. The subjects were 30 children with Tourette Syndrome and their mothers, and 30 children matched on age, sex, and socioeconomic status and their mothers. The results indicated that, while the children did not differ on self-concept, the mothers of the Tourette Syndrome patients had lower self-concepts than the mothers of the controls, suggesting that family members should be considered in the treatment of the Tourette Syndrome children. In addition, severity of illness was positively correlated with the children'

The fear behind the fear: a case study of apparent simple injection phobia.

The interrelations of multiple phobias are illustrated in the case of a female student whose presenting complaint of injection phobia did not at first appear to be related to her other fears. The rapid amelioration of her presenting complaint (sustained at three-month and eight-month follow-up) followed the discovery of functional relationships between these fears. The implications of the case with respect to Lang's (Anxiety and the Anxiety Disorders, 1985) work on the cognitive psychophysiology of emotion, and the investigations of McNeil and Berryman (Behavior Research Therapy 27, 233-236, 1

[Sudeck syndrome (CRPS) caused by unique personality traits: myth and fiction].

BACKGROUND: In analogy to the thesis of "pain-proneness", conceptualised by G. Engel more than 50 years ago, the idea of a unique structure in personality emerged, which was given a causal meaning in the development of Sudeck's Disease (now known as complex regional pain syndrome - CRPS), of which the pathogenesis is particularly unknown until today. It was supposed that certain psychological traits predispose one to develop CRPS. Predisposition in this context was apprehended as a personal susceptibility to produce and maintain an excessive reaction to nociceptive stimulations. This model has

Personality, Social Factors, Brain Functioning, Familial Risk, and Trajectories of Alcohol Misuse in Adolescence.

IMPORTANCE: The development of an alcohol use disorder in adolescence is associated with increased risk of future alcohol dependence. The differential associations of risk factors with alcohol use over the course of 8 years are important for preventive measures. OBJECTIVE: To determine the differential associations of risk-taking aspects of personality, social factors, brain functioning, and familial risk with hazardous alcohol use in adolescents over the course of 8 years. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The IMAGEN multicenter longitudinal cohort study included adolescents recruited from

Child is father of the man: child abuse and development of future psychopathology.

Available epidemiological data indicate that the abuse of children within families is a very common phenomenon, and is still on the rise. Among others, abuse includes direct physical and emotional violence to the child, as well as the indirect emotional trauma of witnessing interparental violence. These early trauma experienced within the context of the family can influence the development of the child's personality as well as predispose towards the development of mental disorders in adulthood. There are some important factors influencing the occurrence of abuse, or the conditions predisposing

Experiences of Trauma for Older Adults With Lived and Living Experiences of Homelessness in Middle to High Income Countries: A Systematic Review and Meta-Aggregation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Research has identified that the number of older adults experiencing homelessness in middle to high income countries is growing. Coincidingly, in recognition that individuals with housing precarity often have experiences of trauma, there have been increasing calls for trauma-and-violence-informed care (TVIC) in practice and research. We conducted this review to consolidate existing literature that explores experiences of trauma among older adults who have experienced homelessness. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of qualitative evidence

Prescribing the Binary for Intersex (and Transgender) Children.

Robert Perske argued in 1972 that "there can be such a thing as human dignity in risk, and there can be a dehumanizing indignity in safety." Though Perske was referring to paternalistic care for the intellectually disabled, we can extend his counsel to the persistent attempts to impose a different kind of "safety," including efforts to enforce the gender and sex binary, as intersex surgeries were (and still are) meant to do. This article argues that when physicians surgically and hormonally alter the genitals and gonads of intersex infants, shaping their bodies to safely align with typical mal

The developmental origins of ruminative response style: An integrative review.

Rumination has been conceptualized as a stable, trait-level response style involving repetitive and passive focus on the symptoms of distress and the possible causes and consequences of those symptoms. This theoretical review examines developmental risk factors of ruminative response style, incorporating a developmental psychopathology perspective. A model integrating these developmental factors within a conceptual framework is proposed, wherein risk factors for distress (i.e., temperamental negative affectivity, stressful environments, parenting, and genetic vulnerability) lead to engagement
