DSM-III personality disorders among patients with major depression, anxiety disorders, and mixed conditions.

Of 298 mainly nonpsychotic psychiatric outpatients between 19 and 59 years of age, a group of patients having either pure major depression, major depression in combination with anxiety disorders, or pure anxiety disorders was extracted. The anxiety disorders were further differentiated in panic and nonpanic anxiety disorders. The groups were compared as to differences in frequency of personality disorders assessed by means of the Structured Interview for DSM-III Personality Disorders. The mixed major depression/anxiety disorder group appeared to be the most deviant with more severe personality

Mentalization based treatment for a broad range of personality disorders: a naturalistic study.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have observed that mentalization-based treatment (MBT) is an effective treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD), but its effectiveness for other personality disorders (PDs) has hardly been examined. Additionally, the evidence supporting the claim that MBT improves mentalizing capacity is scarce. The present study examined whether (i) patients with a broad range of PDs enrolled in an MBT program would improve on several outcome measures (ii) mentalizing capacity would improve over time; (iii) patients with BPD would improve more than those with non-borderl

Alcohol dependence among patients admitted to psychiatric emergency services.

We assessed the prevalence of alcohol dependence among patients examined in the psychiatric emergency service of a general hospital. We compared socio-demographic data and psychiatric status of patients with and without alcohol dependence. One-hundred and four consecutive patients received by the psychiatric emergency service of Bichat-Claude Bernard Hospital (Paris, France) were assessed. Diagnosis of alcohol dependence, acute alcohol intoxication, and antisocial personality was determined according to DSM-IV criteria. Other psychiatric disorders were identified using a structured psychiatric

Therapeutic implications of personality disorders in dermatology.

There is a significant psychiatric comorbidity that exists in multiple dermatological conditions, stemming from the patient''s own psychological make up. This article reviews personality disorders and their types, which influence the course and prognosis of several psychodermatological disorders. Self-inflicted skin lesions, for example, are usually associated with obsessive-compulsive behavior, but they also share connections to Narcissistic and Borderline personality disorders. Body dysmorphic disorder is another psychodermatological condition seen in dermatology, aesthetic, and cosmetic sur

A family study of schizophrenic and normal control probands: implications for the spectrum concept of schizophrenia.

Morbidity risks for mental illness were determined in 750 first-degree relatives of chronic schizophrenic and normal control probands. Psychiatric disorders that were more frequent in relatives of schizophrenic probands than in relatives of normal control probands were chronic schizophrenia (5.8% versus 0.6%), schizotypal personality disorder (definite, 14.6% versus 2.1%; probable, 12.1% versus 6.5%), and paranoid personality disorder (7.3% versus 2.3%). The data suggest that schizotypal and paranoid personality disorders are genetically related to schizophrenia. The implications for schizophr

Postdischarge Suicide and Death in South Korean Children and Adolescents Hospitalized for a Psychiatric Illness.

OBJECTIVE: The postdischarge suicide rate in children and adolescents ever hospitalized for a psychiatric illness is much higher than that of children and adolescents in the general population. We aimed to investigate the postdischarge death and suicide among children and adolescents hospitalized for a psychiatric illness using the Korean National Health Insurance database and causes of death statistics from the National Statistics Office. METHOD: We identified children and adolescents less than 18 years of age who experienced at least one psychiatric hospitalization from 2008 to 2013 with a

Psychiatric comorbidity of gender identity disorders: a survey among Dutch psychiatrists.

OBJECTIVE: In the Netherlands, it is considered good medical practice to offer patients with gender identity disorder the option to undergo hormonal and surgical sex reassignment therapy. A liberalization of treatment guidelines now allows for such treatment to be started at puberty or prepuberty. The question arises as to what extent gender identity disorder can be reliably distinguished from a cross-gender identification that is secondary to other psychiatric disorders. METHOD: The authors sent survey questionnaires to 382 board-certified Dutch psychiatrists regarding their experiences with

Dependency and suicidality in addictive disorders.

Excessive interpersonal dependency has been described in depression and addictive disorders. Moreover, excessive dependency and suicidality are linked in psychiatric subjects, but their relationships have not been studied in specific addictions. Separate samples of female anorectic patients (n=150), female bulimic patients (n=95), male (n=150) or female (n=68) alcoholics, male (n=94) or female (n=54) drug abusers and non-psychiatric control subjects (n=683) were included in the study. On the basis of a structured interview, suicidal ideations, number of previous suicide attempts and diagnoses

Impact of work therapy on health status among homeless, substance-dependent veterans: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the health outcomes of clinician-supervised, performance-based, abstinence-contingent therapeutic work programs on homeless persons with addiction disorders. This study examined the effect of the Department of Veterans Affairs compensated work therapy program (CWT) on nonvocational outcomes. With mandatory urine screenings and adherence to addiction treatment schedules, CWT provided work opportunities (wages, hours, and responsibilities) with jobs created from Veterans Affairs contracts competitively obtained from private industry. METHODS: Homeless, substanc

Social Dysfunction and Neural Processing of Emotional Valence Across Depressive and Anxiety Disorders.

Social dysfunction is common across psychiatric disorders, including depressive and anxiety disorders. Both disorders have been associated with negative biases in socioaffective neural processing, which may impact responses to social stimuli. This study aims to determine whether social dysfunction across these psychiatric disorders is indeed coupled to altered neural processing of negative and positive valenced emotional stimuli and whether a common neurobiological correlate can be identified. An implicit emotional faces functional magnetic resonance imaging task was used to measure brain acti

Psychopathology in pathological gamblers seeking treatment.

High rates of psychiatric symptoms have been reported in pathological gamblers. This study of psychiatric comorbidity in pathological gamblers is the first to use structured psychiatric interviews assessing DSM-III-R Axis I and II disorders. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM III-R (SCID-P, SCID-II) was administered to 40 (25 male, 15 male) pathological gamblers seeking outpatient treatment in Minnesota for gambling, and 64 (41 male, 23 female) controls. High lifetime rates of Axis I (92%) but not Axis II (25%) psychopathology were found in pathological gamblers as compared to controls.

Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome is not rare. At an early age, persons with this disorder show involuntary, rapid and purposeless movements of multiple muscle groups. They also develop vocal tics. Both motor and vocal tics vary in intensity and can worsen with stress. The syndrome may be confused with, or associated with, a variety of psychiatric disorders. Although some cases appear to be familial, the etiology of the syndrome is generally unknown. Haloperidol is effective in controlling symptoms in many patients. The Tourette Syndrome Association provides a valuable support system.

The familial aggregation of common psychiatric and substance use disorders in the National Comorbidity Survey: a family history study.

BACKGROUND: Most family studies of psychiatric disorders examine one syndrome at a time, and identify probands in clinical rather than epidemiological settings. METHOD: In the National Comorbidity Survey, 5877 respondents were asked about the history of five psychiatric disorders in their parents: major depression (MD), generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), antisocial personality disorder (ASP), alcohol abuse/dependence (AAD) and drug abuse/dependence (DAD). RESULTS: Significant familial aggregation was seen for all disorders. Controlling for other disorders produced only modest reductions in

Nicotine dependence and comorbid psychiatric disorders: examination of specific genetic variants in the CHRNA5-A3-B4 nicotinic receptor genes.

BACKGROUND: The associations between nicotine dependence and specific variants in the nicotinic receptor CHRNA5-A3-B4 subunit genes are irrefutable with replications in many studies. The relationship between the newly identified genetic risk variants for nicotine dependence and comorbid psychiatric disorders is unclear. We examined whether these genetic variants were associated with comorbid disorders and whether comorbid psychiatric disorders modified the genetic risk of nicotine dependence. METHODS: In a case control study of nicotine dependence with 2032 subjects of European descent, we us

Assessment of the criminal recidivism among individuals with mental disorders.

Epidemiological studies conducted in various regions through the world point to an increased risk of violence among individuals with mental disorders. Violent behaviour occurs in a certain social system that involves a whole person with a certain history of life, with a certain state of health or disease, and interaction with other socal circumastances. There are different methods of risk assessment, but basically two broad categories of methods determine assessment of the risk: clinical and statistical. The main purpose of the investigation is by using the statistical scale to determine risk

Impact of dualism on the perception of treatability in psychiatry.

Background: A false division between mental and physical disorders is supported by dualism, contributing to mental health stigma. There is a widespread misconception about the prognosis and treatment options for psychiatric diseases. This is despite data supporting the effectiveness of psychiatric treatments for a variety of illnesses that have been proven by meta-analysis. In general, the efficacy of drugs used to treat physical problems and psychiatric disorders is comparable. Methods: In this article, experts from a variety of fields-including psychiatry, primary care, and general medicine-
