When You Cannot Go With the Flow: A Case Report of May-Thurner Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) is caused by extrinsic compression of the left iliac venous system, most commonly between an overlying right iliac artery and fifth lumbar vertebra, and is seen mainly in women between 20 and 50 years of age. This compression may be asymptomatic but can lead to the formation of venous thrombi causing left lower extremity pain and swelling. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of MTS in a patient who initially presented with back and left lower extremity pain and swelling whose initial duplex venous ultrasound was negative for deep venous thrombus. Subse

Styloidectomy and Venous Stenting for Treatment of Styloid-Induced Internal Jugular Vein Stenosis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Internal jugular vein stenosis (IJVS) results in poor venous outflow and can result in intracranial hypertension. Venous stenting has become a debated topic for correction of this pathology. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 49-year-old male merchant with bilateral IJVS presented with headache, dizziness, and pulsatile tinnitus. He was found to have intracranial hypertension and left IJVS caused by styloid process compression and right IJVS caused by damage of the venous intima. His symptoms improved after undergoing styloidectomy followed by left intra-internal jugular vein (IJV) balloon. Howe

Spectrum of the inferior vena cava: MDCT findings.

Inferior vena cava (IVC) abnormalities are not uncommon. Congential anomalies, thrombosis, neoplasms, and obstructive lesions can involve IVC. With the wide use of multidetector CT, it has demonstrated its ability to display the abnormalities of IVC. Congenital anomalies, thrombosis, neoplasms, and stenosis or obstructive diseases and other abnormalities can be demonstrated by MDCT. We present a pictorial essay to illustrate its roles in detecting and defining the nature of lesions of IVC, from the anatomy to disease spectrum of IVC.

Popliteal venous aneurysms: involvement of tibial nerve in aneurysmal wall.

Primary popliteal venous aneurysms are very rare vascular abnormalities, with 50 cases reported in the English literature. Thromboembolic complications are common in popliteal venous aneurysms. Since medical treatment has been proved inadequate, surgical repair is recommended with a minimum time delay. However, it involves some risk because of the complex anatomy of the popliteal space. We report on a case of popliteal venous aneurysm, in which the tibial nerve was involved in the aneurysmal wall and was injured by surgical repair.

Combined CT venography and pulmonary angiography: how much venous enhancement is routinely obtained?

OBJECTIVE: Combined CT venography and helical pulmonary angiography is a new diagnostic test that permits radiologists to check both the pulmonary arteries for embolism and the deep veins of the abdomen, pelvis, and legs for thrombosis in a single examination. The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of venous enhancement routinely obtained using this combined CT examination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified all patients at a single institution who, during a 29-month period, had symptoms suggestive of pulmonary embolism and who underwent CT venography and helical pulmonary an

Doppler-ultrasonographic detection of retrograde pulsatile flow in the caudal vena cava of a puppy with cor triatriatum dexter.

A three-month-old puppy had ascites, but its heart was normal by auscultation. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed an enlarged liver, distended hepatic veins and a distended caudal vena cava. Doppler ultrasonography detected retrograde flow in the caudal vena cava and abnormally pulsatile flow in the hepatic veins and caudal vena cava. A non-selective venogram was used to detect the path of the blood from the caudal vena cava. A postmortem examination showed that the puppy had cor triatriatum dexter and a defect in the atrial septum.

[Changes in renal and testicular veins in left-sided varicocele and choice of the surgical method in children and adolescents].

Selective phleborenotesticulography, ++tensiometry of the left iliac, right and left renal veins, vena cava inferior, duplex scanning of the left renal vein were performed in 356, 296 and 57 patients, respectively, of a total of 356 examinees aged 8-17 years with left-side varicocele. Among other tests were measurements of hormones in the blood from the left and right testes (n = 24), pO2, pCO2. Stenosis, aortomesenteric compression (AMC) of the left renal vein, left-side venous renotesticular hypertension (RTH) of the left renal vein were diagnosed in 12, 342 and 158 patients, respectively. Deep venous thrombosis of the leg due to psychiatric stupor.

We report the cases of two patients with psychiatric stupor who developed venous thrombosis. A 29-year-old schizophrenic woman had been hospitalized in psychiatric institutions three times because of stupor associated with auditory hallucinations and thought blocking. These symptoms recurred and she was admitted to our hospital with deep venous thrombosis of her left leg. The other patient was a 67-year-old woman with depression. She had also suffered from insomnia. Following admission to our hospital, she developed a depressive stupor complicated by deep venous thrombosis of her left leg. Bot

[Pulmonary hypertension secondary to multiple pulmonary thromboembolisms due to thrombosis of the right subclavian vein].

Deep venous thrombosis of the upper limbs is a rare entity which is usually associated to a high number of risk factors, with an incidence of 12.4% approximately, although the development of associated fatal complications is rare. We present the case of a patient without known risk factors who, in the course of a thrombosis at the right subclavian vein, developed very severe pulmonary hypertension secondary to multiple pulmonary embolism.

[Syndrome of transverse testicular ectopia with persistent Müllerian vestiges or empty bursa with overfilled funiculus spermaticus].

Transverse parorchidium is characterized by the presence of two testes in the same bursa, and may be associated with persistent Müllerian vestige in the spermatic cord of the normally situated testis. Persistence of Müllerian vestige is related to inadequate production of anti-Müllerian hormone by the embryonal testis. Transverse parorchidium is caused by the emergence of both deferent ducts into the Müllerian vestige. Diagnosis is evoked by the presence of an empty bursa associated with an abnormally hard spermatic cord contralaterally. This syndrome should be known of surgeons, as ablation o

Balloon angioplasty of venous structures.

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty was attempted in 20 patients with stenoses of venous structures. It concerned one stenosis in a native subclavian vein, 12 stenoses in venous bypass grafts and 7 stenoses in hemodialysis-access fistulas. Primary results were excellent for the procedures in the native vein and the venous bypass grafts with success in all patients (13/13). In the arteriovenous fistulas for hemodialysis, dilatation of the venous stenoses was only possible in 5 out of 7 patients. The subclavian vein stenosis did not recur within a follow-up period of 3 years. Of the stenoses i

[Advantages of a light-equipped angiographic guide in percutaneous obliteration of the spermatic veins].

Percutaneous transvenous treatment has become the elective therapy for varicocele because it is a simple, safe, economic and reliable procedure. The presence of proximal anastomoses connecting a competent valved spermatic trunk with the renal vein can be responsible for a varicocele and make its treatment difficult. In such cases; the valve of the spermatic venous trunk can be bypassed using an open-ended guidewire with a removable mandril core, and then injecting the sclerosing agent through the guide. Moreover, the guidewire can facilitate the insertion of the catheter through the competent
