The psycho-corporal turbulence which young people undergo during adolescence requires support from their family and school to help them succeed in their learning and to become independent. An analysis of the upheavals faced by young people and of their ties with their family and their peers enables the risk of school refusal to be identified and early preventative actions to be put in place.

Eating disorders are a common problem in childhood. Swallowing phobia is characterised by fear of choking on having consumed food, liquids or tablets. Although they are considered a minor disorder and have low prevalence, there has been an increase in its incidence in children and adolescents in the past few years. The analysis of four cases treated in our day hospital for this specific phobia provides an assessment and the care necessary for its treatment and solution, in collaboration with other professionals and the family. The importance of the role that nurses have in the treatment of thi

Specific phobias (SPs) are common, with lifetime prevalence estimates of 10%. Our current understanding of their pathophysiology owes much to neuroimaging studies, which enabled us to construct increasingly efficient models of the underlying neurocircuitry. We provide an updated, comprehensive review and analyze the relevant literature of functional neuroimaging studies in specific phobias. Findings are presented according to the functional neuroanatomy of patients with SPs. We performed a careful search of the major medical and psychological databases by crossing SP with each neuroimaging tec

Blood-injection-injury (BII) phobia is an anxiety disorder that may be accompanied by vasovagal fainting during confrontation with the feared stimuli. The underlying pattern of autonomic regulation has been characterized as a diphasic response, with initial increases in heart rate and blood pressure that are typical of a fight-flight response, and subsequent drops in blood pressure and/or heart rate that may precipitate vasovagal fainting. Tensing skeletal muscles of the arms, legs, and trunk (applied tension) has been proposed as a technique to cope with this dysregulation. This review critic

Social anxiety (SA) has as its main feature the fear of social situations, being characterized as social phobia or social anxiety disorder when functional impairment emerges as a result of that fear. Although the recognition of the condition has increased in recent years, it is believed that many patients and physicians still take the symptoms of the disorder for personality traits with no need for treatment. There is evidence that people with SA display abnormal patterns of facial emotion processing that could account for the onset and maintenance of the disorder. The objective of this review

Phobias are a prevalent and often debilitating mental health problem all over the world. This article aims to explore what is known about the use of Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) as a treatment for this condition. Whilst there is abundant experiential evidence from NLP practitioners attesting to the efficacy of this method as a treatment for phobias, experimental research in this area is somewhat limited. This paper reviews evidence available in literature produced in the UK and US and reveals that NLP is a successful treatment for phobias as well as being particularly efficient due to th

This meta-analysis assessed two potential moderators of treatment efficacy in social phobia: video feedback, and treatment format (i.e., individual vs. group). Eighteen recent (2000-2006) trials including a total of 511 participants were sampled. Effect sizes (Cohen's d's) were calculated for each trial while correcting for measurement error. The Q statistic was used to test (a) heterogeneity across trials and (b) potential moderators. Results indicated that use of video feedback was not a moderator of treatment efficacy and did not significantly affect effect sizes. In contrast, treatment for

Entomophobia is an abnormal and persistent fear of insects. Sufferers experience anxiety even though they realize that most insects pose no threat. A similar phenomenon, known as arachnophobia is fear of spiders. Delusional parasitosis (DP) is a hypochondrial psychosis, usually monosymptomatic, where the patient is convinced of being infested with animal parasites while no objective evidence exists to support this belief. The complaints are usually about skin infestation, but involvement of the gastrointestinal tract has also been described. Numerous samples are brought for examination from th

For some time the concept of "school phobia" has been associated with anxiety disorders in children and adolescents, and especially with separation anxiety. The scope of this concept is now being broadened to include other underlying disorders such as antisocial disorders and behaviors such as school truancy, which were previously among the differential diagnoses. The term "school refusal" is now preferred in the literature, being more in line with reports of increasingly complex patient and family situations. This article reviews the main clinical, psychopathological and therapeutic dimension

Although social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common and disabling disorder that may occur in different cultural settings, it is under-diagnosed by clinicians. In order to facilitate accurate diagnosis, the clinical features and differential diagnosis of SAD are described, together with useful assessment instruments for clinicians. Aetiological evidence suggests that the causal pathways for SAD include genetic, neurobiological, temperamental and cognitive factors. A range of effective treatments for SAD are available: current findings suggest that the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSR

Alleged differences between associative and non-associative perspectives are sometimes more apparent than real. The non-associative model describes a pathway to fear that is complementary to associative pathways. It does not seek to usurp conditioning models as applied to evolutionary-neutral fear. We discuss vexing definitional issues surrounding what qualifies as a conditioning event and what characterises the non-associative pathway. Genetic findings are shown to be consistent with the non-associative model of fear. Following discussion of the relation between stress-diathesis models and th

The non-associative account of phobic etiology assumes that a number of specific fears (e.g., fear of heights, water, spiders, strangers, and separation) have an evolutionary background and may occur in the absence of learning experiences (e.g., conditioning). By this view, these specific fears pertain to stimuli that once posed a challenge to the survival of our prehistoric ancestors. Accordingly, they would emerge spontaneously during the course of normal development and only in a minority of individuals, these specific fears would persist into adulthood. While the non-associative approach h

Social phobia is associated with a high level of dysfunction because of the direct effect the disorder has on the ability of the individual to interact with others in social or work situations. The level of impairment and disability is seen to be as severe as and, in some cases, more severe than is seen in other chronic disorders such as depression. The disability is increased by a cascade of comorbidity which appears, in almost all cases, to be secondary to the social phobia. This paper discusses different treatment modalities and details the efficacy of moclobemide in both short- and long-te
