Maternal coordination of the daily rhythm of malate dehydrogenase activity in testes from young rats: effect of maternal sympathetic denervation of the pineal gland and administration of melatonin.

Chronic sympathetic denervation of the pineal gland by bilateral removal of the superior cervical ganglia (SCG) was performed on female rats … hers. The results indicate the involvement of the maternal pineal gland in the maternal transfer of photoperiodic information necessary for the coordination of the circadian system in young rats.

Patterns of immunocytochemically detected Z-DNA in the recrudescing testicular epithelium of the Turkish hamster (Mesocricetus brandti).

Z-DNA has been considered a labile but essential structural form of DNA in recombination and gene expression, two significant activities in mammalian seminiferous epithelium. The present study has utilized the recrudescing testes of Mesocricetus brandti to study in detail the potential Z-DNA sites in specific testicular cell types as detected by an immunoprobe. Testicular regression was physiologically induced by modifying environmental photoperiods and/or temperature. Partial atrophy of seminiferous epithelium occurred in all experimental groups but Sertoli cells persisted throughout regressi…

Melatonin receptors revisited.

The pineal gland and its major product melatonin have a key role in conveying the environmental photoperiodic stimuli that impinge upon the mammalian reproductive axis. The brain, especially the medial preoptic and suprachiasmatic areas are thought to be the main sites of melatonin's neuroendocrine activity. The responsiveness of the mammalian reproductive system to the hormone is dependent on age, on the prevailing cyclical stage and on the circadian time. The existence of specific 125I-melatonin binding sites in synaptosomal fractions from rodent brain has recently been reported. The binding…

In-vitro secretion of prolactin and growth hormone in the presence of melatonin by pituitary gland from mink kept under long or short days.

Mink anterior pituitaries were incubated in Medium 199 for up to 9 or 13 days. Biological activity of prolactin and GH was determined. Daily concentrations of prolactin and GH in the incubation medium were also measured by radioimmunoassay and radioreceptor assay. When females were kept under short days for several weeks before the experiment, a significant decrease in prolactin secretion by the anterior pituitary was observed as compared with that in females maintained under long days. In contrast, secretion of GH was not modified by the photoperiodic history of the animals. Pineal gland dene…

Wrist temperature: A circadian predictor of lipid profiles in arctic residents.

Disruptions in circadian rhythms have been linked to adverse metabolic outcomes. This study investigated the relationship between circadian parameters of wrist temperature (wT) and lipid profiles in Arctic residents, a population characterized by extreme photoperiodic variation. We examined associations between the MESOR, amplitude and acrophase of wT and total cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and the TG/HDL-C ratio in both Native (N) and non-Native (NN) individuals, utilizing photoperiod-adjusted regression models. Analyses followed two s…

Climate-based models for West Nile Culex mosquito vectors in the Northeastern US.

Climate-based models simulating Culex mosquito population abundance in the Northeastern US were developed. Two West Nile vector species, Culex pipiens and Culex restuans, were included in model simulations. The model was optimized by a parameter-space search within biological bounds. Mosquito population dynamics were driven by major environmental factors including temperature, rainfall, evaporation rate and photoperiod. The results show a strong correlation between the timing of early population increases (as early warning of West Nile virus risk) and decreases in late summer. Simulated abunda…

Sympathetic denervation and chronic serotonin uptake blockade by fluoxetine do not affect pineal gland 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid: evidence that oxidative deamination of pineal serotonin is a property of the pinealocyte.

This investigation tested the hypothesis that oxidative deamination of 5HT in the pineal gland occurs primarily in cellular compartments other than the pinealocyte (i.e., noradrenergic nerve terminals and glia). Following sympathetic denervation of the pineal gland by bilateral superior cervical sympathectomy, pineal levels of 5HT and its oxidative metabolite, 5HIAA, were measured by HPLC from samples collected at six time points over the 24 h photoperiod. The role of glia in 5HT deamination was further examined by chronic treatment with the 5HT uptake blocker, fluoxetine (10 mg/kg). Sympathec…

Alteration of free serum amino acids in voles infected with Trypanosoma brucei gambiense.

Free serum amino acid pools of field voles, Microtus montanus, were determined over a 24 hr period, and compared to values obtained from voles infected with Trypanosoma brucei gambiense. The majority of amino acids in the control animals demonstrated a diurnal variation, peaking predominantly during the dark portion of the photoperiod. This trend was not evident in the infected animals. In addition, infected voles possessed an apparent state of hypoaminoacidemia, with levels of threonine, serine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, tryosine, and tryptophan typically below uninfected values. Alanine a…

Short-term exposure to dim light at night affects reproduction and metabolism-linked processes in adult male tree sparrows (Passer montanus).

Anthropogenic factors, particularly urbanization, have immense implications for the natural light-dark cycle of the species. The present study deliberates on the effects of dim light at night on the transcript expression of reproductive, steroidogenic, and metabolic gene markers in adult male tree sparrows (Passer montanus). Adult male birds were procured locally and were divided into two groups (n = 6 birds/group). Both groups were exposed to 12 h of light and 12 h of darkness, but group two (dLAN group) with a constant dim light (10 lx) during the dark hours. The experiment was run for 2 wee

Comparison of milk production and endocrine profiles of dairy cows exposed to either white light-emitting diode or induction lighting.

White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are characterized by their high blue light intensity, whereas induction lighting (IL) emits lower levels of blue light. This study investigated the effects of exposure to WLED and IL on milk production and physiological responses in dairy cows. Nine lactating Holstein cows [225 ± 32.5 days in milk, 710 ± 24.6 kg initial body weight (BW), 2.6 ± 1.6 parity] were kept under a 16:8 h light-dark cycle and assigned to two treatments for 3 wk each in a 2 × 2 crossover design: exposure to either WLED (443 nm peak wavelength, 231 lx) or IL (529 nm peak wavelength, 23

Weak influence of light and time of day on transcriptional response to SAV3 infection in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts.

Seventeen percent of aquaculture Atlantic salmon in Norway die after transfer from freshwater to seawater facilities, many from infectious d … onditions. We began with two hypotheses. First, that compared with a regular light-dark cycle (long photoperiod; LP), Atlantic salmon smolts kept at constant light (LL) would have a weaker resistance to viral challenge. Second, that Atlantic salmon smolts kept in a regular light-dark cycle would have altered immune sensitivity between the light and dark phase …

Transient Cooling Resets Circadian Rhythms of Locomotor Activity in Lizards.

Animals frequently experience temperature fluctuations in their natural life cycle, including periods of low temperatures below their activity range. For example, poikilothermic animals are known to enter a hibernation-like state called brumation during transient cooling. However, the knowledge regarding the physiological responses of brumation is limited. Specifically, the impact of exposure to low-temperature conditions outside the range of temperature compensation on the subsequent circadian behavioral rhythms remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of transient cooling

Effects of constant darkness on behaviour and physiology of male and female mice.

A healthy state of life suggests not only a disease-free condition but also normal psychological functioning and behaviour. To maintain a healthy life, the duration of light exposure is a crucial factor. Perturbation of the standard light-dark cycle (LD: 12 h light-12 h dark in mice) may result in brain, behavioural and physiological abnormalities. The current study determined the effects of 3 and 5 weeks of constant darkness (DD: 00 h light-24 h dark) on the behaviour, hormones, prefrontal cortex (PFC) and metabolome of male and female C57BL/6 J mice. We also studied 3 weeks of restoration in

Daylight saving time transitions are not associated with increased seizure incidence.

OBJECTIVE: Given the known association of daylight saving time (DST) transitions with increased risk of accidents, heart attack, and stroke, we aimed to determine whether seizures, which are reportedly influenced by sleep and circadian disruption, also increased in frequency following the transition into DST. METHODS: Using Seizure Tracker's self-reported data from 12 401 individuals from 2008-2016, 932 717 seizures were assessed for changes in incidence in relation to DST transitions. Two methods of standardization-z scores and unit-scaled rate ratios (RRs)-were used to compare seizure prope

Search for seasonal rhythmicity of pineal melatonin production in rats under constant laboratory conditions: spectral chronobiological analysis, and relation to solar and geomagnetic variables.

Earlier we reported that in a number of experiments pineal melatonin production in rats under constant laboratory conditions displayed seasonal rhythms but subsequently were not always able to confirm this. Since there was no indication under which conditions such rhythms may be present, we performed four consecutive identical experiments with untreated female Sprague-Dawley rats within the same animal room during 1997-2006. Nocturnal urine samples (19-23, 23-3, 3-7 h) were collected at monthly intervals over 494-658 d with 12 animals each in experiments I and II (1997-1999, 1999-2000), 30 ani

Environmental modulation of alcohol intake in hamsters: effects of wheel running and constant light exposure.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol abuse leads to marked disruptions of circadian rhythms, and these disturbances in themselves can increase the drive to drink. Circadian clock timing is regulated by light, as well as by nonphotic influences such as food, social interactions, and wheel running. We previously reported that alcohol markedly disrupts photic and nonphotic modes of circadian rhythm regulation in Syrian hamsters. As an extension of this work, we characterize the hedonic interrelationship between wheel running and ethanol (EtOH) intake and the effects of environmental circadian disruption (long-ter

Testicular and epididymal regression induced by a short photoperiod (6L:18D) after 30 days of the experiment increases AS activity in the testes and reduces its activity in the epididymides to the values found in the early stages of development. In vitro evidence that leptin suppresses melatonin secretion during long days and stimulates its secretion during short days in seasonal breeding ewes.

Recent observations in seasonal-breeding mammals indicate that the hypothalamus is programmed to become leptin resistant during long days (LD) and leptin sensitive during short days (SD). These observations support the possibility that photoperiod mediates at least part of its effects on melatonin secretion through changes in leptin sensitivity. Herein we examined the interaction of season and recombinant ovine leptin (oleptin) on melatonin secretion by pineal explants in short-term culture. Glands were collected after sunset from eight ewes during LD (March, April, May, June) and from an addi…
