Ebola virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: A mini-review.

Ebola virus disease is one of the most serious and deadliest infectious diseases in the world with a sufficient number of recorded deaths. Since its discovery in 1976 until its last epidemic (14th), recorded and declared on April 23, 2022 by the National Minister of Public Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo and we have observed a succession of simultaneous epidemics of the disease to Ebola virus. This disease escapes the control of the health system of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a health system which is already destabilized by the corona virus disease 2019 pandemic. Since th

SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and social inequalities in different subgroups of healthcare workers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has exacerbated health inequalities worldwide. Yet, such a perspective has not been investigated in specific healthcare workers and their resulting inclusion as a priority group for vaccination have been an important focus of political and social discussion. This study aimed at investigating whether SARS-CoV-2-seropositivity in healthcare workers in a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was influenced by social determinants of health and the social vulnerability in subgroups of workers. METHODS: A serological survey was conducted in 1,154 healthcare workers in June

Self-Exclusion from Gambling-A Measure of COVID-19 Impact on Gambling in a Highly Online-Based Gambling Market?

The COVID-19 pandemic, and related changes of the gambling market, have been suspected to affect the risk of problem gambling. Despite media attention and political concern with this risk, study findings hitherto have been mixed. Voluntary self-exclusion from gambling was introduced on a national level in Sweden as a harm reduction tool in 2019, and this self-exclusion service in Sweden is a rare example of such an official, nationwide, multi-operator system. The present study aimed to evaluate whether short-term self-exclusion patterns were affected by different phases of COVID-19-related imp

[Focal point emergency departments].

The number of patients treated in hospital emergency departments in Germany has risen in recent years to approximately 20 million. This escalation also applies to the increasing numbers of patients presenting with neurological symptoms and diseases, which occur in approximately 20 % of emergency patients. In addition to patients with stroke, inflammatory or degenerative central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS) disorders who need urgent treatment, more and more patients with nonspecific complaints or conditions attend emergency departments for elective treatment, not lea

"A world crazier than us": Vanishing social contexts and the consequences for psychiatric practice in contemporary Romania.

Since the end of Communism, mental health care in Romania has increasingly sought to align its practices with idealized models of Western psychiatric practice. Much of this realignment has been made possible by accessing and integrating new pharmaceuticals into psychiatric hospital settings. Less straightforward have been the painful attempts to create a system modeled on international standards for training and certifying psychotherapists. Unfortunately, the political, economic, infrastructural, and epistemological environment of the Romanian mental health care system has prevented many other

High-frequency death certifiers in Taiwan: a sociocultural product.

Accurate death certification is essential to high-quality mortality statistics. Physicians who certify disproportionately large numbers of deaths can significantly affect the validity of the resultant mortality data. In Taiwan in 1994, 110 death certifiers issued more than 100 death certificates each; and nine of these high-frequency certifiers issued more than 500 death certificates. We explore the cultural, political, economic, historical, and social contexts of high-frequency death certification in Taiwan. Because of the traditional belief in Taiwan that one must die at home for the soul to

Child abuse in Nigeria.

Although child abuse occurs in Nigeria, it has received little attention. This is probably due to the emphasis placed on the more prevalent childhood problems of malnutrition and infection. Another possible reason is the general assumption that in every African society the extended family system always provides love, care and protection to all children. Yet there are traditional child rearing practices which adversely affect some children, such as purposeful neglect or abandonment of severely handicapped children, and twins or triplets in some rural areas. With the alteration of society by rap

Economic inequality, working-class power, social capital, and cause-specific mortality in wealthy countries.

This study tests two propositions from Navarro's critique of the social capital literature: that social capital's importance has been exaggerated and that class-related political factors, absent from social epidemiology and public health, might be key determinants of population health. The authors estimate cross-sectional associations between economic inequality, working-class power, and social capital and life expectancy, self-rated health, low birth weight, and age- and cause-specific mortality in 16 wealthy countries. Of all the health outcomes, the five variables related to birth and infan

The state of psychiatry in South Africa today.

The very idea/philosophy behind the South African government's policy of Apartheid (separation), is insulting and humiliating to the black people and tends to incite arrogance and a sense of superiority, even omnipotence, in the whites. Personality development is skewed along racial lines. The mental effects of malnutrition and certain physical diseases, both of which are widespread in South African blacks, especially among their children, are well known. The torture to which security-police detainees have been subjected has resulted in thousands of cases of mental ill-health, as well as physi

Synthetic opioid response in a low-income country: policy and implementation lessons from Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Potent synthetic opioids are entering low-income settings where addiction-treatment, harm-reduction, overdose-surveillance, toxicology, and regulatory systems remain limited. In April 2024, Sierra Leone declared a national emergency after the rapid spread of Kush, later confirmed to contain nitazene-class opioids in 87% of tested samples. OBJECTIVE: To examine implementation determinants shaping Sierra Leone's national Kush response and draw policy lessons for low-resource settings confronting synthetic opioid markets. METHODS: We conducted a theory-driven document analysis using

Stakeholder-Perceived Needs in Early Community Nursing Implementation: A Qualitative Study.

Background/Objectives: Health systems across Europe are increasingly challenged by population ageing, multimorbidity, and persistent inequities in access to care. Community Nursing has emerged as a promising approach to strengthening preventive, community-based services, yet evidence on stakeholder-perceived needs during early implementation remains limited. This study aimed to explore how different types of needs are perceived and articulated during the early implementation of Community Nursing in Austria. Methods: An interpretive descriptive qualitative study was conducted as part of an Aust

Predictors of Secondary Traumatic Stress among Oncology Nurses in Palestine.

INTRODUCTION: The work environment of oncology nurses exposes them to patient suffering, making them vulnerable to developing Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS). Most research on STS has been conducted in high-income countries with stable healthcare systems, whereas little is known about its occurrence or risk factors in conflict-affected regions. This study aims to determine the prevalence of STS and identify its predictors among Palestinian oncology nurses who face unstable political conditions, insufficient resources, and limited mental health services. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical

[Geriatric medicine shapes the Future : Recommendations for modern Geriatric Medicine that places older people and their needs at the centre].

Geriatric medicine is becoming increasingly more important in the context of demographic change. Older people frequently suffer from multimorbidity, functional impairments and complex psychosocial conditions that are often insufficiently addressed by a purely diagnosis-oriented medical approach. The primary aim of geriatrics is therefore not only the treatment of diseases but also with respect to individual goals, the preservation of independence, quality of life and social participation. This expert paper outlines the current state of geriatric care in Germany, its scientific evidence base and

A Learning Agenda to Address Immunization Equity and Access for Nigeria to End Zero-Dose Children by 2030: Report from a National Stakeholder Consensus Workshop.

BACKGROUND: Nigeria has one of the highest burdens of zero-dose (ZD) children, those who have not received the first dose of pentavalent vaccine, despite multiple national and partner initiatives to strengthen routine immunization. A coordinated national learning agenda is required to guide evidence generation and use for reducing ZD children. The study objective is to describe the process and outcomes of a national stakeholder workshop that used a modified Delphi approach to prioritise learning questions on ZD children in Nigeria. METHODOLOGY: The Zero-Dose Learning Hub (ZDLH) convened a nat

Patterns of medical-ethical violations in Iranian detention facilities.

BACKGROUND: Access to reliable information about conditions in autocratic prison systems is limited, yet independent reports indicate pervasive mistreatment in Iranian prisons. Historical precedents and recent testimonies suggest that medical knowledge and pharmacological agents may be misused as instruments of coercion and torture. OBJECTIVE: To summarize and contextualize reported cases of medically mediated torture, forced medication, denial of medical care, and other human-rights violations in Iranian detention facilities, drawing on reputable online media sources and direct accounts from

Transforming pediatric oncology in Ecuador through the Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survival exceeds 80% in high-income countries but remains below 50% across much of Latin America. In Ecuador, limited access to diagnosis and essential medicines, and fragmented governance have hindered progress. In 2025, Ecuador became the first country in the Region of the Americas to implement the Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines, an initiative led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to ensure equitable access to quality medicines while strengthening health systems. METHODS: Between 2023 and 2

How can health systems sustain lessons drawn from emergency contexts? Evidence from Colombia.

The Covid-19 pandemic demanded rapid adaptation to health systems internationally, but little is known about the sustained value of the approaches to learning adopted. How does ongoing environmental turbulence influence the lessons drawn from health system responses to pandemics? To address this question, we engage with, and further develop, Levitt and March's highly cited perspective on experiential learning by analyzing Colombian healthcare professionals' experiences gathered during semi-structured interviews. Interviews included representatives of national government, service providers, adm
