Measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination coverage: an ecological study of primary health care and socio-economic factors in Catalonia, Spain.

This study examined the association of socio-economic factors and the structure of primary care centres (PCCs) with measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination coverage among the 8-year-old population in Catalonia, Spain. We conducted an ecological study to retrospectively assess the MMR vaccination-recorded status of children born in 2012, using public health data extracted in December 2020. For each of 300 PCCs serving 70,498 children, we calculated vaccination coverage rates from electronic health records and linked these rates to a composite deprivation index corresponding to the territo

Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia in a Cancer Patient on High-Dose Methadone Maintenance Therapy: A Case for Subspecialty Opioid Use Disorder Primary Care.

As opioid use disorder (OUD) reaches epidemic levels in the United States, medication-assisted treatment (MAT) plays a central role in its treatment. Methadone, a long-acting mu-opioid receptor agonist has been shown to be effective in managing OUD. It is also known that chronic opioid therapy may have the paradoxical effect of increased sensitivity to pain, a phenomenon called opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH). This presents a conundrum when a patient such as ours, on MAT presents with acute pain and OIH. This case report illustrates the current challenges health care providers encounter when

Axillary hyperhidrosis: a focused review.

Axillary hyperhidrosis is characterized by an increased amount of sweat production, localized to the armpits, to compensate for environmental conditions and to control thermoregulation. It affects about 3.12% of the US population. It has a significant effect on one's psychological and physical health, as well as one's occupational life. The objective of this paper is to review the epidemiology, clinical presentation, pathophysiology, histology, genetics, and management and treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis.

Improving the evidence for the management of childhood nephrotic syndrome.

Management of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome in children is based on a series of clinical trials. The trial by Sinha and colleagues in this issue is 1 of many needed to improve the evidence base for induction and maintenance therapies in this population. While key questions remain about identifying the appropriate therapy for each patient, clinical trials provide an opportunity to extend evidence-based practice that minimizes toxicity and optimizes patient health.

Navigating the Intersection of Monkeypox and Pregnancy: A Call for Vigilance and Research.

The recent global spread of monkeypox has raised significant concerns, particularly regarding its impact on vulnerable populations such as pregnant individuals. While limited data suggest possible adverse outcomes, including vertical transmission and fetal demise, there remains a critical need for comprehensive research to inform clinical management and public health strategies. The lack of specific guidelines and tailored public health messaging for pregnant individuals underscores the urgency for focused attention in this area. Addressing these gaps is essential to ensuring the health and sa

Developing a peer-led approach to assess the oral health needs and experiences of people in prison and on release.

BACKGROUND: This study used a participatory research approach to develop population-specific oral health questionnaires and a peer-researcher model to explore the oral health needs and experiences of people in prison and after their release. METHODS: A two-phase co-design approach using the Double Diamond framework engaged people with lived experience of prison, dental professionals, and support workers. Phase one involved collaborative workshops to design two questionnaires: one for use in prison and one following release. A peer-researcher model was also co-designed. Phase two piloted the q

Cost Consequence Analysis of the Management of Hyperkalemia by Patiromer and Optimization of Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System Inhibitors Therapy in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients in Saudi Arabia.

Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASi) have been shown to improve outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients but are associated with an increased risk of hyperkalemia in this vulnerable population. Hyperkalemia often leads to patients' downtitrating or discontinuing RAASi which can result in sub-optimal health outcomes. The objective is to evaluate the cost and health benefits of maintaining normokalemia using patiromer, an oral potassium binder while optimizing RAASi therapy in CKD patients in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The medium-to long-term costs and health outcom

What makes a cyanobacterial bloom disappear? A review of the abiotic and biotic cyanobacterial bloom loss factors.

Cyanobacterial blooms present substantial challenges to managers and threaten ecological and public health. Although the majority of cyanobacterial bloom research and management focuses on factors that control bloom initiation, duration, toxicity, and geographical extent, relatively little research focuses on the role of loss processes in blooms and how these processes are regulated. Here, we define a loss process in terms of population dynamics as any process that removes cells from a population, thereby decelerating or reducing the development and extent of blooms. We review abiotic (e.g., h

Countermeasures and vaccination against terrorism using smallpox: pre-event and post-event smallpox vaccination and its contraindications.

Smallpox, when used as a biological weapon, presents a serious threat to civilian populations. Core components of the public health management of a terrorism attack using smallpox are: vaccination (ring vaccination and mass vaccination), adverse event monitoring, confirmed and suspected smallpox case management, contact management, identifying, tracing, monitoring contacts, and quarantine. Above all, pre-event and post-event vaccination is an indispensable part of the strategies. Since smallpox patients are most infectious from onset of the rash through the first 7-10 days of the rash, vaccina

General Practice Statistics in Australia: Pushing a Round Peg into a Square Hole.

In Australia, general practice forms a core part of the health system, with general practitioners (GPs) having a gatekeeper role for patients to receive care from other health services. GPs manage the care of patients across their lifespan and have roles in preventive health care, chronic condition management, multimorbidity and population health. Most people in Australia see a GP once in any given year. Draft reforms have been released by the Australian Government that may change the model of general practice currently implemented in Australia. In order to quantify the impact and effectivenes

A review of acaricides and their resistance mechanisms in hard ticks and control alternatives with synergistic agents.

Ticks are significant ectoparasites that transmit a variety of pathogens, leading to serious human and animal diseases, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, and many others. The emergence of acaricide resistance in hard ticks presents a formidable challenge for public health and livestock management, exacerbated by the increasing incidence of tick-borne diseases and associated economic losses, estimated at $20 billion annually in the livestock sector alone. This review examines the mechanisms underlying acaricide resistance, focusing on genetic mutations, metabol

Exploring the Lives of Women Rag Pickers in an Indian Metropolitan City: A Mixed-Methods Cross-Sectional Study on Social and Occupational Determinants Shaping Their Existence.

BACKGROUND: Globally, occupational hazards are a concern, especially in waste management. With 31.2% of its population in urban areas, India is confronted with escalating waste management challenges. People worldwide generate about two-thirds of a kilogram of waste daily. Effective solid waste management is crucial due to population growth, changing waste patterns, and rapid urbanisation. It profoundly impacts environmental, resident, and worker health. Rag picking is an informal profession undertaken by a marginalised population of the society, which involves collecting waste from trash cans,

The Impact of Psychotropic Medications on Bone Health in Youth.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Psychotropics are prescribed to youth at rapidly growing rates and may negatively impact bone health. Little awareness exists of this association among prescribing providers. Childhood and adolescence are critical times for bone development. Understanding these effects and their management is important to informed psychotropic use. RECENT FINDINGS: Through a variety of mechanisms, antidepressants, benzodiazepines, mood stabilizers, neuroleptics, and stimulants may all negatively impact pediatric bone health. This confers added risk of osteoporosis in a population already at

Moving from evidence to practice: Models of care for the prevention and management of musculoskeletal conditions.

With musculoskeletal conditions now identified as the second highest cause of the morbidity-related global burden of disease, models of care for the prevention and management of disability related to musculoskeletal conditions are an imperative. Musculoskeletal models of care aim to describe how to operationalise evidence-based guidelines for musculoskeletal conditions and thus support implementation by clinical teams and their health systems. This review of models of care for musculoskeletal pain conditions, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and musculoskeletal injuries and t

City-scale assessment of long-term air quality impacts on the respiratory and cardiovascular health.

BACKGROUND: The impact of the urban environment on human health is a contemporary subject of environmental research. Air pollution is often considered a leading environmental driver. However, a plethora of other factors within the urban exposome may be involved. At the same time, the resolution of spatial data is also an important facet to consider. Generally, systematic tools for accurate health risk assessment in the urban environment are missing or are not implemented. METHODS: The long-term impact of air quality (PM10, PM2.5, NO2, benzene, and SO2) on respiratory and cardiovascular health
