Highly antimicrobial-resistant Nontyphoidal Salmonella from retail meats and clinical impact in children, Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) resistant to ciprofloxacin or ceftriaxone and its impact on patients' clinical course are rarely reported. METHODS: Children with culture-proven salmonellosis treated in a medical center in northern Taiwan in 2017 were enrolled. To trace the source of Salmonella, Salmonella isolated from food samples were collected from markets. Antimicrobial susceptibility and serotypes were determined. RESULTS: Among the 453 isolates, 122 (26.9%) were highly antimicrobial-resistant, as defined by resistance to ciprofloxacin or ceftriaxone or bot

Increased liver injury in patients with chronic hepatitis and IgG directed against hepatitis E virus.

Type-E hepatitis is responsible for more than three million symptomatic cases and more than 40,000 deaths worldwide. The situation of this hepatitis is overall poorly known in sub-Saharan Africa. Notably, the baseline circulation of HEV outside sporadic outbreaks has been barely characterized in this large region. More specifically, the impact of superinfection by this virus on the health status of the large reservoir of patients chronically infected with other hepatitis viruses remains to be evaluated. We searched for anti-HEV immunoglobulins in a series of 200 pregnant women and 92 patients

Xenotransplantation - A special case of One Health.

The chronic shortage of human transplants to treat tissue and organ failure has led to the development of xenotransplantation, the transplantation of cells, tissues and organs from another species to human recipients. For a number of reasons, pigs are best suited as donor animals. Successful, routine xenotransplantation would have an enormous impact on the health of the human population, including the young, who sometimes require a replacement organ or islet cells, but especially the elderly, who more often suffer the consequences of organ failure. The first form of xenotransplantation applied

Investigating a hyper-endemic focus of Taenia solium in northern Lao PDR.

BACKGROUND: The Taenia solium cysticercosis-taeniasis complex is a Neglected Tropical Disease of significant public health importance in many impoverished communities worldwide. The parasite is suspected to be endemic in Lao PDR as a result of widespread risk factors including open human defecation, free ranging pigs and weak systems for meat inspection and carcass condemnation. Reported prevalences of human taeniasis throughout the country have ranged from 0-14%, although few of these have definitively diagnosed T. solium, grossly indistinguishable from Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm) and Tae

Combating Taenia solium cysticercosis in Southeast Asia an opportunity for improving human health and livestock production.

Cysticercosis caused by the zoonotic pork tapeworm Taenia solium is emerging as a constraint for the nutritional and economic well-being of small-holder farming communities in many underdeveloped areas of Southeast Asia. It occurs mainly in impoverished regions with inadequate sanitation, poor pig management practices and lack of meat inspection and control. Neurocysticercosis, the most serious form of the disease, is considered the most common parasitic infection of the human nervous system and the most frequent preventable cause of epilepsy in the developing world. Although theoretically eas

Source attribution of foodborne pathogens in the Netherlands using structured expert elicitation.

Foodborne pathogens represent a significant public health burden. Quantifying the relative importance of various potential sources of foodborne infection is challenging due to data scarcity and uncertainty in empirical studies. Structured expert judgment (SEJ) provides a valuable methodological alternative to gain insights into source attribution of foodborne pathogens. We conducted a SEJ study to attribute human cases of 26 foodborne pathogens in the Netherlands to seven major transmission pathways, 20 food groups, and two animal groups, in a typical post-COVID19 year, using Cooke's classical

[Epidemiological situation of hepatitis E in Africa].

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) belongs to the Hepeviridae family, Orthohepevirinae subfamily, Paslahepevirus genus which includes eight genotypes. HEV genotype 1 (HEV-1) and genotype 2 (HEV-2) are specific to humans, while genotype 3 (HEV-3) and genotype 4 (HEV-4) circulate mainly in pigs, wild boars and deer, but have also a zoonotic potential. HEV genotype 5 (HEV-5) and 6 (HEV-6) viruses circulate in wild boars in Japan and genotype 7 (HEV-7) and 8 (HEV-8) viruses circulate in camelids. The worldwide distribution of HEV is influenced by ecological and socioeconomic factors. In developing countries

RNA-seq transcriptome profiling of pigs' liver in response to diet with different sources of fatty acids.

Pigs (Sus scrofa) are an animal model for metabolic diseases in humans. Pork is an important source of fatty acids (FAs) in the human diet, as it is one of the most consumed meats worldwide. The effects of dietary inclusion of oils such as canola, fish, and soybean oils on pig gene expression are mostly unknown. Our objective was to evaluate FA composition, identify changes in gene expression in the liver of male pigs fed diets enriched with different FA profiles, and identify impacted metabolic pathways and gene networks to enlighten the biological mechanisms' variation. Large White male pigs

Needs of exploring the burden of recent onset seizures due to neurocysticercosis and challenges in southeast Asia focusing on scenario in Malaysia.

Seizures due to neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a neglected human-to-human transmitted disorder and an emerging problem worldwide. A substantial portion of recent onset seizures is known to be attributed to NCC in Taenia solium (T. solium) endemic areas where populations which neither raise pigs nor eat pig meat are also at risk. High prevalence of NCC causing epilepsy has been reported in the underdeveloped areas of Southeast Asia (SEA) however, only fragmentary information on its incidence is available in countries like Malaysia. In Malaysia T. solium infection was previously thought to be infre

Ensuring a negligible risk of Trichinella in pig farming from a control perspective.

Today, the majority of pigs are raised in industrialised pig production systems with a high level of biosecurity resulting in a negligible risk of Trichinella. Carcass testing therefore seems less relevant if the aim of testing is to protect public health. However, traditional pig production (including backyard production) still occurs, and organic pig production is on the increase in some areas, suggesting a continued need for carcass testing from such compartments. These diverse developments within pig production have changed the epidemiologic situation of Trichinella. This has necessitated

Listeria monocytogenes infection in the over-60s in England between 2005 and 2008: a retrospective case-control study utilizing market research panel data.

A retrospective case-control study of listeriosis in patients in England aged over 60 years is described. The incidence of listeriosis in patients aged ≥60 years in England has doubled since 2001; hence, the investigation of risk factors for infection in this group is important to inform on prevention and control. Standardized epidemiological information has been sought on cases since 2005, but the value of the data accrued is limited without some perception of exposure prevalence in the population at risk of listeriosis. The exposures of listeriosis cases aged ≥60 years reported in England fr

Current status of food-borne parasitic zoonoses in the United States.

Although not a major public health problem, food-borne parasitic zoonoses in the United States are the cause of numerous diseases that occur widely in the population. The most common food-borne parasitic diseases in the United States are trichinosis, toxoplasmosis, taeniasis/cysticercosis, diphyllobothriasis, and anisakiasis. Since 1947, when the US Public Health Service began to record statistics on trichinosis cases in humans, the numbers of reported cases in the United States have declined markedly, from an average of about 400 with 10-15 deaths reported each year in the late 1940s, to an a

Optimization of a capsid integrity RT-qPCR method to quantify thermally inactivated hepatitis E virus in suspensions and in deli meat samples.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) belongs to the Paslahepevirus balayani species (Hepeviridae family) and harbours a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA genome. HEV genotypes 3 and 4 (HEV-3 and-4) are mainly transmitted from animal reservoirs (primarily domestic pig), either through direct contact or by consuming meat from infected animals. Heat treatment is the main food technological process used to inactivate HEV in pork products. It is crucial to implement robust methods for assessing HEV infectivity to ensure the effectiveness of such inactivation processing. Even if several cell lines are permissi

Oligopeptides from Jinhua ham prevent alcohol-induced liver damage by regulating intestinal homeostasis and oxidative stress in mice.

The current study aimed to evaluate the protective activity of peptides isolated from Jinhua ham (JHP) against alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and the mechanisms by which JHP prevents against ALD. The tangential flow filtration (TFF) combined with size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) were used to isolate the JHP. Then the hepatoprotective activity of peptides was evaluated through experiments in mice. The primary structure of the peptide with the strongest liver protective activity was Lys-Arg-Gln-Lys-Tyr-Asp (KRQKYD) and the pep

[The relationship between tooth eruption and ingestion of 15 food items among children aged 18-20 months].

Objectives If children in formative stages ingest foods that are too hard or too soft, they can experience delays in oral cavity functions. Therefore, it is important for young children to receive foods of appropriate hardness in relation to their chewing ability. We investigated the relationship between the ingestion of 15 different food items and tooth eruption among children aged 18-20 months. Methods Caregivers from Japanese municipalities who took their children for an 18-month health check-up were given an anonymous questionnaire. Questionnaires were only given to caregivers who provided

Generation in yeast and antigenic characterization of hepatitis E virus capsid protein virus-like particles.

Hepatitis E is a globally distributed human disease caused by hepatitis E virus (HEV). In Europe, it spreads through undercooked pork meat or other products and with blood components through transfusions. There are no approved or golden standard serologic systems for HEV diagnostics. Commercially available HEV tests often provide inconsistent results which may differ among the assays. In this study, we describe generation in yeast and characterization of HEV genotype 3 (HEV-3) and rat HEV capsid proteins self-assembled into virus-like particles (VLPs) and the development of HEV-specific monocl

The convergent threat of ESBL, carbapenemase, and MCR resistance determinants in the Hong Kong food chain: A cross-sectional surveillance study.

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the food supply poses a significant public health threat. This study investigated the prevalence and molecular characteristics of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing, carbapenemase-producing, and mobilized colistin resistance (mcr)-harbouring bacteria in retail food products in Hong Kong. A total of 710 samples (449 raw meats and 261 ready-to-eat foods) were collected from supermarkets and wet markets. Overall, ESBL-producing bacteria were detected in 49.6% of samples, with highest prevalence in pig organs (100%) and chicken (77%

Parallel single B cell transcriptomics to elucidate pig B cell repertoire.

Pork is the most widely consumed meat on the planet, placing swine health as a critical factor for both the world economy and the food industry. Infectious diseases in pigs not only threaten these sectors but also raise zoonotic concerns, as pigs can act as "mixing vessels" for several animals and human viruses and can lead to the emergence of new viruses that are capable of infecting humans. Several efforts are ongoing to develop pig vaccines, albeit with limited success. This has been largely attributed to the complex nature of pig infections and incomplete understanding of the pig immune re
