Black women have lower levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) with higher serum PTH levels than white women. Correction of these alterations in the vitamin D-endocrine system could lead to less bone loss in postmenopausal women and, consequently, preservation of bone mass. Ten healthy postmenopausal black women were given 20 microg vitamin D3 daily for 3 months. At the end of the study, mean serum 25OHD levels had increased from 24 to 63 nmol/L. Serum intact PTH and nephrogenous cAMP declined significantly, and there was a 21% drop in the fasting urinary N-telopeptide of type I collagen.

OBJECTIVES: Determine the effectiveness of hysteroscopic surgery in persistent postmenopausal bleeding.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Transcervical resection was performed in 176 women between the ages of 46-74 years. A benign cause was noted in 135 cases (polyps in 80 and submucous fibroids in 55); 37 patients had no significant disease and 4 had endometrial atypical hyperplasia missed in the preoperative evaluation. Patients underwent resection of polyp, resection of fibroid or endometrial ablation. Major operative complications were rare and included 3 perforations and one case of fluid overload.

To study the possible contributions of the differences in estrogen metabolism to bone mass in postmenopausal osteopenia, spinal and femoral bone mineral densities (BMD) were measured, and 18 urinary metabolites of estrogen were analyzed by a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry assay system in 59 postmenopausal women (5-10 yr after menopause). We report 13 cases of white lesions in the vulva in postmenopausal women. Nine cases had clinical and histological features typical of lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA). Two cases exhibited mild histological changes suggestive of LSA. Two cases of normal-appearing histology without significant histological changes. Considering the relatively short duration of the disease and relatively small lesions in the last two cases, they may be considered to represent the initial stage of LSA.

Case-control and cohort studies support the hypothesis that postmenopausal oestrogen-replacement therapy reduces the risk of atherosclerotic disease manifestations. The evidence for a cardioprotective effect of such a therapy is, however, incomplete because randomized prospective studies are missing.
