Epidemiology of dietary nutrient intake in ESRD.

Protein-energy wasting (PEW) is one of the strongest risk factors of adverse outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease including those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who undergo maintenance dialysis treatment. One important determinant of PEW in this patient population is an inadequate amount of protein and energy intake. Compounding the problem are the many qualitative nutritional deficiencies that arise because of the altered dietary habits of dialysis patients. Many of these alterations are iatrogenically induced, and albeit well intentioned, they could induce unintended harmful

Chromium(VI)-induced mutagenesis in the lungs of big blue transgenic mice.

The mutagenic activity of the hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] compound potassium dichromate was examined in the Big Blue transgenic mouse lung, the target organ for Cr(VI) carcinogenesis in humans. Mice were exposed to Cr(VI) by intratracheal instillation of a potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) solution. Analysis of the deposition of Cr in mouse lungs revealed that the procedure reproducibly resulted in about 5% retention of the Cr in the lung. Lower but measurable levels were detected in kidney and liver. We found a dose-dependent and time-dependent increase in the mutant frequency in the mouse lung

Effects of fosenopril, a once-daily angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, on resting and exercise-induced changes of blood pressure, hormonal variables, and plasma potassium in essential hypertension.

Fosenopril, a new angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, is a prodrug that is converted to its active diacid metabolite after intestinal absorption. Its excretion is equally divided between hepatic and renal routes. This study details the efficacy of fosenopril at rest and during exercise on blood pressure, plasma potassium, plasma renin activity, and plasma aldosterone in 11 hypertensive males, mean age 55 years. Individual subjects underwent an identical exercise protocol (bicycle ergometry) on placebo and on active treatment. Supine mean blood pressure fell from 116 to 100 mm Hg, P

Purification and chromium-excretory function of low-molecular-weight, chromium-binding substances from dog liver.

From liver of dogs injected iv with potassium dichromate (38 mg/kg body wt), a low-molecular-weight chromium-binding substance (LMCr) was purified into two subfractions, LMCr I and LMCr II, which differ in physical and chemical properties. LMCr I was identified to be an anionic, organic chromium compound with a molecular weight of 1500. It contained glutamic acid, glycine, and cysteine as the predominant amino acids and firmly bound chromium in a ratio of one chromium(III) to one molecule of LMCr I. LMCr II was isolated in crystalline form and demonstrated to be a water-soluble, inorganic chro

Pharmacological characterization of vampire bat-derived CGRP at the human CGRP receptor in the Xenopus oocyte system.

Vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) possess an oral venom system consisting of submandibular glands that produce bioactive compounds, delivered to prey via their sharp incisors. The venom has long been recognized for its anticoagulant and proteolytic properties, which disrupt blood clot formation and interfere with the coagulation cascade. A peptide with high structural similarity to human calcitonin gene-related peptide (hCGRP), a potent vasodilator, was recently discovered in the venom of Desmodus rotundus. This vampire bat-derived CGRP (vCGRP) elicited relaxation of pre-contracted rat mesenter

Effects of nitric oxide and its congeners on sickle red blood cell deformability.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is characterized by hemoglobin polymerization upon deoxygenation. Polymerization causes the sickle cells to become rigid and misshapen (sickling). Red blood cell (RBC) dehydration greatly increases polymerization. Cycles of sickling and unsickling cause an influx of calcium that leads to loss of potassium via the calcium-activated Gardos channel, which dehydrates the cells leading to increased polymerization. In this study the effects of nitric oxide (NO) and its congeners on RBC deformability were examined, focusing on sickle RBCs (sRBCs). STUDY DESIGN A

Influence of soil pH in vegetative filter strips for reducing soluble nutrient transport.

Low efficacy of vegetative filter strips (VFS) in reducing soluble nutrients has been reported in research articles. Solubility of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds is largely affected by pH of soil. Changing soil pH may result in a decrease in soluble nutrient transportation through VFS. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of pH levels of VFS soil on soluble nutrient transport reduction from manure-borne runoff. Soil (loamy sand texture; bulk density 1.3 g cm-3) was treated with calcium carbonate to change pH at different pH treatment levels (5.5-6.5, 6.5-7.5, and 7.5-8.5), soil w

Utilization of water chestnut for reclamation of water environment and control of cyanobacterial blooms.

Overgrowth of water chestnut (Trapa spp.) is a regional problem throughout Asia and North America because of waterway blockage and water fouling upon decomposition. In the present study, we investigated the potential of water chestnut to control cyanobacterial blooms, via a high content of phenolic compounds. In addition, we assessed the impact of biomass harvesting and crude extract application on nutrient balance. We showed that the floating parts of water chestnut contained high concentrations of total phenolics (89.2 mg g(-1) dry weight) and exhibited strong antioxidant activity (1.31 mmol

Inhibitory effects of calcium channel agonists on renin release from rat kidney cortical slices.

Inhibitory effects of calcium channel agonists such as Bay K 8644 [methyl-1,4-dihydro-2,6-dimethyl-3-nitro-4-(2-trifluoromethylphenyl)- pyridine-5-carboxylate] and CGP 28392 [ethyl-4-(2-difluoromethoxyphenyl)-1,4,5,7-tetrahydro-2-methyl- 5-oxofuro-(3,4-b)-pyridine-3-carboxylate] on renin release were investigated, using rat kidney cortical slices. Bay K 8644 or CGP 28392 alone had no effect on renin release from the slices, whereas both compounds produced a concentration-dependent inhibition of the release in the presence of 15 mM potassium. The Bay K 8644-induced inhibitory action was more ef

Apamin inhibits NO-induced relaxation of the spontaneous contractile activity of the myometrium from non-pregnant women.

There is now considerable evidence for the involvement of K+ channels in nitric oxide (NO) induced relaxation of smooth muscles including the myometrium. In order to assess whether apamin-sensitive K+ channels play a role in NO - induced relaxation of the human uterus, we have studied the effect of specific blockers of these channels on the relaxation of myometrium from non-pregnant women. In vitro isometric contractions were recorded in uterine tissues from non-pregnant premenopausal women who had undergone hysterectomy. Apamin (10 nM) and scyllatoxin (10 nM) did not alter spontaneous myometr

Synthesis and evaluation of some new 1,3,4-oxadiazoles bearing thiophene, thiazole, coumarin, pyridine and pyridazine derivatives as antiviral agents.

In an attempt to produce heterocyclic compounds based on 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives with potential antiviral activity, synthesis of compound 1 [2-(5-thioxo-4,5-dihydro-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)acetonitrile] was performed through the reaction of cyanoacetic acid hydrazide with carbon disulfide in alcoholic potassium hydroxide. Compound 1 has an activating methylene group, so it was directed toward some specific reactions. Thus, aryldiazonium chlorides reacted with compound 1 affording hydrazono derivatives 2a-c. Also, aromatic aldehydes reacted with compound 1 to produce compounds 3a,b. Furthermo

Biogas upgrading using aqueous bamboo-derived activated carbons.

CO2/CH4 separation is crucial for biogas upgrading. In this study, the bamboo-derived activated carbons (BACs) were prepared with different ratios of potassium hydroxide (KOH)/bamboo charcoal (BC), and the hybrid sorbents of aqueous BACs were developed for CO2/CH4 separation. Both the gas solubility and sorption rate were measured, and Henry's constant and liquid-side mass-transfer coefficient as well as the CO2/CH4 selectivity were calculated. Meanwhile, the comprehensive performances of aqueous BACs were evaluated using a novel index, and the cost of biogas upgrading using the aqueous BACs w

Hypokalemia Related to Distal Renal Tubular Acidosis as an Initial Presentation of Primary Sjogren's Syndrome.

Hypokalemia due to loss of potassium through the kidneys can be caused by distal Renal Tubular Acidosis (dRTA). The etiology of dRTA can be primary due to genetic defects or secondary to autoimmune diseases, especially Sjogren's syndrome (SS). The occurrence of dRTA in SS patients is low, at only 5% of cases. This case was interesting because dRTA was the initial clinical manifestation that led to the diagnosis of SS in the patient. A 48-year-old woman came with complaints of recurrent weakness. The patient was routinely hospitalized with severe hypokalemia and received potassium supplementati

Persulfate catalyst synthesized with waterworks sludge for degrading Safranine T in the presence of boron.

Energy conservation and emission reduction are the general trend of the present world. In this study, a catalyst of 3WSH based on the waste recycle of waterworks sludge (WS) and Chinese herbs was prepared using one-step calcination treatment and then characterized by SEM, XRD, XPS, FTIR and BET. The catalytic performance of 3WSHB for activating potassium persulfate (PDS) was evaluated through the degradation of Safranine T (ST) in the presence of boron powder (B). The effects of vital parameters on ST removal were systematically studied, including PDS concentration, 3WSHB dosage, initial solut

Effects of eutrophic water with ammonium chloride, urea, potassium dihydrogen phosphate and sodium-β-glycerophosphate on Myriophyllum verticillatum and epiphytic bacteria.

With the rapid development of industry and agriculture, excessive nitrogen and phosphorus released into natural surface water have caused eutrophication. Applying submerged plants to manage eutrophic water has attracted widespread attention. However, there are limited studies on the effects of different nitrogen and phosphorus in the water environment on submerged plants and their epiphytic biofilm. Therefore, this paper investigated the effects of eutrophic water with ammonium chloride (IN), urea (ON), potassium dihydrogen phosphate (IP), and sodium-β-glycerophosphate (OP) on Myriophyllum ver

Structural and electrophysiological basis for the modulation of KCNQ1 channel currents by ML277.

The KCNQ1 ion channel plays critical physiological roles in electrical excitability and K+ recycling in organs including the heart, brain, and gut. Loss of function is relatively common and can cause sudden arrhythmic death, sudden infant death, epilepsy and deafness. Here, we report cryogenic electron microscopic (cryo-EM) structures of Xenopus KCNQ1 bound to Ca2+/Calmodulin, with and without the KCNQ1 channel activator, ML277. A single binding site for ML277 was identified, localized to a pocket lined by the S4-S5 linker, S5 and S6 helices of two separate subunits. Several pocket residues ar

Coral-like potassium and phosphorous doped graphitic carbon nitride structures with enhanced charge and mass transfer dynamics toward photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production and microbial disinfection.

This study provided insight on the design of co-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) structures by using potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4) as a promising material for the supply of potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) elements. The addition of KH2PO4 to the cyanuric acid-melamine complex (CM) solution stabilized its structure by coordinating potassium ions (K+) in the hexagonal pores and dihydrogen phosphate ions (H2PO4-) in dangling bonds on the edge sites. The resultant supramolecular structure (KP-CM) with a unique skeleton governed the polycondensation process, resulting in K and P co
