3D printed models in mandibular reconstruction with bony free flaps.

The aim of the study was to compare two types of mandible reconstructive operations with scapula and fibula free flaps: procedures with 3-D models from thermoplastic materials and conventional planning surgeries. 8 patients were treated due to an advanced oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma. In four patients with a mandibular defect, a physical 3-D model consisting of the reconstructed and unaffected sites was prepared for a reconstruction protocol. The 3-D models were designed based to high resolution CT scans. Assessment of comparative functionality (stability of junction, mobility, masticat

Application of quality by design for 3D printed bone prostheses and scaffolds.

3D printing is an emergent manufacturing technology recently being applied in the medical field for the development of custom bone prostheses and scaffolds. However, successful industry transformation to this new design and manufacturing approach requires technology integration, concurrent multi-disciplinary collaboration, and a robust quality management framework. This latter change enabler is the focus of this study. While a number of comprehensive quality frameworks have been developed in recent decades to ensure that the manufacturing of medical devices produces reliable products, they are…

3D Printed Cranial Window System for Chronic μECoG Recording.

Chronic studies of flexible μECoG electrodes and the electrode-brain interface have been limited by the inability to assess tissue response over time. The electrophysiological system presented here combines epidural microelectrocorticographic (μECoG) recording capabilities with the ability to visualize tissue response over time through light microscopy and optical coherence tomography (OCT). With the ability to interchange both the electrode and the electronics, and a flushing port for injection of flushing saline and/or drugs, this 3D printed system has future applications in chronic electrop

An omentum-cultured 3D-printed artificial trachea: in vivo bioreactor.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the prior implantation of a 3D-printed polycaprolactone (PCL) artificial trachea in the omentum is beneficial for revascularization of the scaffold and reduces associated complications in the reconstruction of a circumferential tracheal defect. Ten New Zealand rabbits were divided into 2 groups: (1) PCL-OC group (PCL scaffold cultured in omentum for 2 weeks before transplantation) and (2) PCL group. In the PCL-OC group, newly formed connective tissue completely covered the luminal surface of the scaffold with mild inflammation at 2 weeks postop

Characterization of reliability of printed indium tin oxide thin films.

Recently, decreasing the amount of indium (In) element in the indium tin oxide (ITO) used for transparent conductive oxide (TCO) thin film has become necessary for cost reduction. One possible approach to this problem is using printed ITO thin film instead of sputtered. Previous studies showed potential for printed ITO thin films as the TCO layer. However, nothing has been reported on the reliability of printed ITO thin films. Therefore, in this study, the reliability of printed ITO thin films was characterized. ITO nanoparticle ink was fabricated and printed onto a glass substrate followed by

Embryonic migration during the prenatal development of palm print patterns.

A major landmark on the palm, the t triradius, is usually found near the wrist. Much interest centres on the fact that it is sometimes found to be central in the palm. It is suggested that, during embryonic development, the t triradius migrates from a position in the centre of the palm to arrive near the wrist. According to this hypothesis, those cases where t triradius remained in the centre of the palm would represent arrests of development. This might explain the association of certain chromosome abnormalities with a t triradius in the centre of the palm.

3D printed Bouncy Bioglass enhances articular cartilage regeneration.

Articular cartilage is an avascular tissue with limited intrinsic repair capacity, and untreated defects will deteriorate progressively over time. Lining the ends of bones, it plays a critical role in joint lubrication and shock absorption. Current surgical interventions, such as microfracture, typically result in the formation of mechanically inferior fibrocartilage. There remains a significant unmet clinical need for biomaterials that can support the regeneration of functional articular cartilage. We present a non-cytotoxic sol-gel hybrid scaffold, of composition silica/poly(tetrahydrofuran)

3D-Printed Bioadhesive Interfaces as Proliferative Niches for Tissue Repair.

Bioadhesives have traditionally been viewed as materials for wound closure, sealing and haemostasis However, in tissue repair they also create the first engineered interface that influences cell retention, microenvironmental homeostasis and subsequent remodelling Recent advances in 3D printing are shifting bioadhesives from passive, uniform layers to architecturally controlled interfaces with spatially programmable chemistry, mechanics, transport and biological function. In this Review, we propose an interface-centred framework in which qualifying 3D-printed bioadhesive interfaces function as …

Innovations in Microsurgery: A Qualitative Appraisal of a Novel 3D-Printed Microscope.

Background Microsurgery is a critical component of plastic and reconstructive surgery. However, the high cost of training and equipment pose significant barriers, particularly in resource-limited settings. To address this challenge, the Microsurgery and Regenerative Medicine Lab within the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin developed a low-cost, 3D-printed surgical microscope. This study qualitatively appraised the use of this novel microscope for microsurgery training by surveying surgeons about their experiences using this tool relative to traditional magnification me

3D-printed low-voltage-driven ciliary hydrogel microactuators.

Micrometre-sized, densely packed natural cilia that perform non-reciprocal 3D motions with dynamically tunable collective patterns are crucial for biological processes such as microscale locomotion1, nutrient acquisition2, cell trafficking3-5 and embryonic and neurological development6-8. However, replicating these motions in artificial systems remains challenging given the limits of scalable, locally controllable soft-bodied actuation at the micrometre scale. Overcoming this challenge would enhance our understanding of ciliary dynamics, clarify their biological importance and enable new micro

Development and biomechanical validation of a 3D-printed Schepens scleral depressor.

This study aimed to develop a low-cost 3D-printed scleral depressor and evaluate its mechanical performance, safety margins, and ocular biomechanical effects. A Schepens-style depressor was developed and printed in PLA. Examiners performed two different tests: (1) the maximum simulated scleral depression force, using both the 3D-printed and conventional steel depressors, and (2) a breakage test performed only on the 3D-printed device, determining its mechanical failure threshold for probabilistic safety analysis. Peak forces were applied to the porcine belly and recorded by a precision balance

Optimizing the design and production of custom 3D-printed knee orthoses.

BACKGROUND: Traditional methods for producing custom-made orthoses are often time-consuming, labor-intensive, and reliant on manual processes, which limit both scalability and the degree of individualization. The development of 3D scanning technologies, computer-aided design (CAD), and additive manufacturing offers a promising alternative enabling patient-specific solutions with greater precision, speed, and efficiency. This study aimed to create an algorithm for automating the design process of personalized knee orthoses based on 3D scanning and intended for 3D printing production. METHODS: A…

3D printed object topography analysis and the viability for forensic examination.

With the recent surge of commercially available 3D printing technologies, untraceable firearm components are being created with ease. As these firearms become more popular, there is a need for viable methods of source identification for these 3D printed objects. Both the printer hot end nozzles and print bed surfaces leave distinct characteristics that are observable upon surfaces of the 3D printed objects. Few studies focus on toolmark analysis of 3D printed evidence, and fewer utilize algorithms to determine the similarity of these toolmarks. The goal of this research was to determine if too…
