3D printed microfluidic Coulter counter for blood cell analysis.

Coulter counters are ubiquitous in everyday life; however, with reduced orifice size shrinkage, there is an increased risk of clogging. Herein, a 3D microfluidic printing-based single-use kit is presented for analyzing biological samples and performing accurate Coulter cell count analysis (e.g., white blood cells in the blood). The gem hole eliminates the traditional design concept of integration inside the detection instrument, innovatively causing it to be independent from the analysis instrument. Further, integrating the hole in the analysis box enables the design of a separate detection mo

Use of a 3D-printed splint for the treatment of distal radius fractures: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Management of distal radius fractures typically includes a period of immobilization with either a cast or a splint. Traditional immobilization methods can have inconveniences such as poor resistance to water and poor ventilation, which can result in skin maceration, skin breakdown, and infection in case of wetting. HYPOTHESIS: 3D-printed splints could potentially overcome the inconveniences of traditional casts. In this report, we compare a 3D-printed splint (3DPS) with a conventional removable splint (CRS) and a traditional cast in a randomized clinical trial. PATIENTS AND METHO

Integrating melt electrowriting and inkjet bioprinting for engineering structurally organized articular cartilage.

Successful cartilage engineering requires the generation of biological grafts mimicking the structure, composition and mechanical behaviour of the native tissue. Here melt electrowriting (MEW) was used to produce arrays of polymeric structures whose function was to orient the growth of cellular aggregates spontaneously generated within these structures, and to provide tensile reinforcement to the resulting tissues. Inkjet printing was used to deposit defined numbers of cells into MEW structures, which self-assembled into an organized array of spheroids within hours, ultimately generating a hyb

[Potential of three-dimensional bioprinting in oral soft tissue engineering applications].

Oral soft tissue engineering involves the reconstruction or restoration of oral and maxillofacial functions and esthetics. As an emerging technology from the early 21st century, three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting promises great application potentials in the preparation of scaffolds and engineered tissues/organs. Although oral soft tissues include dental pulp, periodontal ligament, gum, oral mucosa, and salivary glands as well as related maxillofacial skin, vascular, muscular, and neuronal tissues, the current application of 3D bioprinting in oral soft tissue-restoration is mainly limited to de

Combining Coaxial Electrospinning and 3D Printing: Design of Biodegradable Bilayered Membranes with Dual Drug Delivery Capability for Periodontitis Treatment.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that can lead to significant destruction of tooth-supporting tissues, compromising dental function and patient's health. Although the currently employed treatment approaches can limit the advance of the disease, the development of multifunctional and hierarchically structured materials is still in demand for achieving successful tissue regeneration. Here, we combine coaxial electrospinning and 3D printing techniques to prepare bilayered zein-based membranes as a potential dual drug delivery platform for periodontal tissue regeneration. A layer of

Autoclave sterilization of an in-house 3D-printed polylactic acid piece: biological safety and heat-induced deformation.

AIMS: Fused filament fabrication 3D printing with polylactic acid filaments is the most widely used method to generate biomodels at hospitals throughout the world. The main limitation of this manufacturing system is related to the biomodels' temperature sensitivity, which all but prevents them to be sterilized using conventional methods. The purpose of this study is to define an autoclave temperature-resistant FFF-PLA 3D printing protocol to print 3D fractures biomodels during preoperative planning. METHODS AND RESULTS: Six different printing protocols were established, each with a different

Development of a 3D printed simulator for closed reduction of distal radius fractures.

BACKGROUND: The use of simulators in medical education is critical for developing procedural competence prior to treating patients. Current training of emergency physicians to perform distal radius fracture reduction is inconsistent and inadequate. APPROACH: We developed a 3D printed distal radius fracture simulation training model that is easy to assemble and relatively inexpensive. We present step-by-step instructions to reproduce the model. EVALUATION: The model was found to have high fidelity for training by both instructors and participants in a simulation-based mastery learning course.

Investigation of the mechanical properties of a bony scaffold for comminuted distal radial fractures: Addition of akermanite nanoparticles and using a freeze-drying technique.

One of the methods of repairing the damaged bone is the fabrication of porous scaffold using synergic methods like three-dimensional (3D) printing and freeze-drying technology. These techniques improve the damaged and fracture parts rapidly for better healing bone lesions using bioactive ceramic and polymer. This research, due to the need to increase the mechanical strength of 3D bone scaffolds for better mechanical performance. Akermanite bioceramic as a bioactive and calcium silicate bioceramic has been used besides the polymeric component. In this study, the porous scaffolds were designed u

Tracheobronchomalacia is a condition of dynamic collapse of the trachea and mainstem bronchi. The clinical significance of tracheobronchomalacia depends on its severity. Mild cases may be medically managed with limited symptomology, while severe cases require advanced therapies, lengthy hospital stays, and carry significant morbidity and mortality. Current therapies for severe tracheobronchomalacia include tracheostomy with prolonged mechanical ventilation, aortopexy, tracheobronchopexy, and intraluminal metallic, silicone, or bioresorbable stents. Three-dimensional (3D)-printed, patient-speci

3D cell printing of islet-laden pancreatic tissue-derived extracellular matrix bioink constructs for enhancing pancreatic functions.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a form of diabetes that inhibits or halts insulin production in the pancreas. Although various therapeutic options are applied in clinical settings, not all patients are treatable with such methods due to the instability of the T1DM or the unawareness of hypoglycemia. Islet transplantation using a tissue engineering-based approach may mark a clinical significance, but finding ways to increase the function of islets in 3D constructs is a major challenge. In this study, we suggest pancreatic tissue-derived extracellular matrix as a potential candidate to recapi

Comparison of reconstructed rapid prototyping models produced by 3-dimensional printing and conventional stone models with different degrees of crowding.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid prototyping models can be reconstructed from stereolithographic digital study model data to produce hard-copy casts. In this study, we aimed to compare agreement and accuracy of measurements made with rapid prototyping and stone models for different degrees of crowding. METHODS: The Z Printer 450 (3D Systems, Rock Hill, SC) reprinted 10 sets of models for each category of crowding (mild, moderate, and severe) scanned using a structured-light scanner (Maestro 3D, AGE Solutions, Pisa, Italy). Stone and RP models were measured using digital calipers for tooth sizes in the mes

Experimental validation of 3D printed patient-specific implants using digital image correlation and finite element analysis.

With the dawn of 3D printing technology, patient-specific implant designs are set to have a paradigm shift. A topology optimization method in designing patient-specific craniofacial implants has been developed to ensure adequate load transfer mechanism and restore the form and function of the mid-face. Patient-specific finite element models are used to design these implants and to validate whether they are viable for physiological loading such as mastication. Validation of these topology optimized finite element models using mechanical testing is a critical step. Instead of inserting the impla

An Open-Source Topology Optimization Framework for ISO 10328-Compliant, Image-Driven Prosthetic Foot Design.

Prosthetic foot design remains relatively rudimentary, as high-strength materials such as metals and carbon-fiber composites limit fabrication methods and design freedom. Conventional approaches rely on size optimization of simple geometries, which do not fully capture anatomical boundaries or natural force transmission through the foot. Here, we adopt an initial design domain derived from the side profile of an actual human leg, providing a more anatomically consistent and patient-specific basis for topology optimization. We present a fully automated, open-source framework for prosthetic foot
