OBJECTIVES: To compare hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography with a saline-air device to hysterosalpingography for evaluating tubal patency.
METHODS: Eighty women undergoing infertility evaluations were recruited for this prospective cohort study. All patients underwent both office-based hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography with a saline-air device and hysterosalpingography as the reference standard, and the fallopian tubes were individually assessed for tubal patency in each procedure. The Cohen κ coefficient was used to assess agreement between each procedure, and the Student t test and χ(2) t

The growing abundance of highly immunogenic vaccines has arrived with a burden of pain, distress, and common adverse reactions that in turn may interfere with parental compliance and aggravate anti-vaccine sentiment. In a study of 150 children in each of 2 age-groups, we found that approximately 20% of the subjects suffered serious distress or worse. During the procedural phase, approximately 90% of the 15-to-18 month old children and 45% of the 4-to-6 year old children showed serious distress or worse. To address non-adherence with pediatric vaccine schedules, we must consider all of the poss

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the level of pain caused by routine procedures during cardiac catheterization and explore ways to enhance patient comfort during the procedure based on the findings.
METHOD: The study involved 24 pediatric patients with congenital heart disease who underwent cardiac catheterization at our center. Pain perception was assessed using skin conductance activity, a non-invasive and sensitive method, at four time points: before the procedure with maternal presence (T0), during local anesthesia following general anesthesia (T1), during femoral vascular interven

BACKGROUND: Cystoscopy evokes discomfort and pain, especially in males. The cystoscopic retrograde approach is standard in the removal of ureteral stents. However the satisfaction and degree of pain during the procedure according to the use of several pain controlling methods are unclear.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional survey of 60 patients who underwent cystoscopic ureteral stent removal under intravenous analgesics (group 1, n = 20), midazolam induction (group 2, n = 20), and propofol (group 3, n = 20). Procedural pain and post-procedure satisfaction were determined, and cost difference…

Vertebral augmentation has emerged as a crucial intervention for cancer patients suffering from vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) due to metastatic or other spinal tumours. These fractures significantly compromise patients' quality of life and exacerbate pain, leading to increased morbidity and decreased functional status. This comprehensive review explores the efficacy, safety, and outcomes of vertebral augmentation techniques, including vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, in cancer patients. It examines the underlying pathophysiology of VCFs in cancer, patient selection criteria, procedural

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a treatment approved for the management of chronic pain refractory to conservative medical treatment. Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts can pose unique challenges during spinal procedures. This case highlights the careful considerations when evaluating patients with VP shunts for SCS and contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the safe use of neuromodulation therapies in this medically complex population.
CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old woman with communicating hydrocephalus status post VP shunt placement presented with refractory lower ba

Trigger point injections (TPIs) are widely used for myofascial pain syndrome and are generally safe, though rare complications, such as pneumothorax, have been reported. We present a rare case of a retained injection needle causing pneumothorax following TPI. A 38-year-old male with chronic back pain, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and prior spinal surgery developed right-sided pleuritic pain and dyspnea several hours after TPI. Imaging revealed a right apical pneumothorax and a retained metallic needle within the thoracic cavity. The needle was successfully removed via video-as

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of crystallized phenol and laser in the treatment of sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus (SPS) disease.
RESULTS: A total of 80 patients (40 crystallized phenol, 40 laser) were included in the study. The procedure time was significantly shorter in the crystallized phenol group than in the laser group (543 and 837 s, p < 0.001). While there was no significant difference in recurrence and patient satisfaction between the groups (p > 0.05), the visual pain scale pain score and post-procedural complications were significantly lower in t

We present a rare case of colon perforation caused by hydrostatic irrigation enema in a patient with chronic renal failure. A 76-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of an exacerbation of lumbar pain and increased difficulty in walking. She had a medical history of traumatic neck pain and chronic lower back pain, which had been treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for 8 years. On admission, the C-reactive protein level was 6.8 mg/dl, so we planned to do a colonoscopy to determine the cause of inflammation. The patient developed abdominal pain approximately

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an important modality for treating chronic pain in patients who have failed conservative therapy and a substantial portion of the population rely on fee-for-service Medicare or Medicaid for coverage. We aimed to determine physician professional fee reimbursement rates and the ratio of Medicaid to Medicare professional fee reimbursement (MMI) for three common Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes related to SCS therapy (63650, 63685, and 63655) across states. Secondarily, we explored trends in utilization and reimbursement of these procedures by

BACKGROUND: Cluneal neuralgia (CN) is an uncommon cause of low back pain that can be difficult to diagnose due to its nonspecific clinical features that often mimic other conditions. If left untreated, it can significantly reduce a patient's quality of life. The following case reports the successful use of percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation (pPNS) for the treatment of middle CN.
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old man presented to our clinic for intractable low back pain that made it difficult for him to sit or lie down on his back. After failing multiple oral medications and procedural interve

OBJECTIVE: Primary adult aortic coarctation (PAAC) is an unusual cause of hypertension. The standard of care includes surgical repair, which can be associated with considerable morbidity and operative risk. Although balloon angioplasty has been successfully used in paediatric and adolescent patients with coarctation, little information exists regarding the endovascular repair of PAAC. This study examines the procedural safety and efficacy of endovascular repair of PAAC along with midterm outcomes.
METHODS: Between January 2000 and July 2008, 16 patients underwent endovascular repair of PAAC.

Local anesthetic (LA) selection for radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of spinal medial branch nerves, sacroiliac joint lateral branches, and large peripheral joint articular branches has not been addressed by any dedicated document. The concentration, class, and sequencing of agents used during needle placement, stimulation testing, and pre-lesioning injection have plausible implications for procedural accuracy and post-procedural analgesia. This review synthesizes pharmacological data and adjacent procedural literature into practice considerations for the musculoskeletal radiologist. No randomize

Percutaneous balloon compression is an established treatment of medically refractory trigeminal neuralgia and remains a commonly performed percutaneous procedure for patients requiring immediate pain relief. Historically, the procedure was standardized through dedicated commercial instrument kits designed for trigeminal balloon rhizotomy, facilitating technical reproducibility across centers. However, the withdrawal of the Food and Drug Administration-approved Mullan percutaneous trigeminal ganglion microcompression set from the medical supplies market in 2016 created a supply gap that require

IMPORTANCE: In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), neonates born very preterm (<33 weeks' gestation) are exposed to great numbers of painful procedures, which is associated with more internalizing (anxiety and depressive) behaviors later in childhood. Oral sucrose is commonly used in NICUs to treat acute procedural pain and is effective in reducing behavioral responses, but the long-term associations between oral sucrose and child behaviors have not yet been examined.
OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between cumulative neonatal pain and sucrose exposure in early life (prior to approxim…
