BACKGROUND: Human errors contribute to one half of all ABO-incompatible transfusions and transfusion-associated fatalities.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report distribution, type and frequency of errors through a prospective study designed specifically to determine errors reported in the cross match lab with their clinical outcome, and to investigate the contributing factors, and underlying system problems.

A clinical case that suggested the involvement of blood coagulation cascades in the inflammation reaction induced by leakage of ovarian endometriotic cysts was encountered. Here, a rapid elevation in plasma D-dimer level (119.6 micro g/ml) was observed within 5 h after onset of ovarian cyst rupture. BACKGROUND: Fatal hemolytic transfusion reaction due to ABO incompatibility occurs mainly as a result of clerical errors. Blood sample drawn from the wrong patient and labeled as another patient's specimen will not be detected by the blood bank unless there is a previous ABO grouping result.

Outer dense fibers (ODF) are specialized cytoskeletal elements of the mammalian sperm tail which are composed of several prominent proteins. We previously reported the isolation of a cDNA (111-450) encoding a putative 84-kDa ODF protein. Here we demonstrate by independent cDNA isolations and by translational/immunoprecipitation of testicular mRNAs using anti-ODF 84 antibodies that 111-450 cDNA encodes the 84-kDa protein. We examined the ability of rabbit ciliary epithelium to metabolize arachidonic acid in vitro. A mutant strain of chicken previously identified by a "recessive white skin" phenotype was found to have a profound deficiency in high density lipoprotein (HDL) and apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I). ApoA-I levels in the mutant chickens were reduced by greater than 90%. Since HDL is the predominant cholesterol transporter in chickens, the HDL deficiency was associated with a greater than 80% decrease in total plasma cholesterol. Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and sphingosine 1-phosphate (Sph1P) production was examined in vitro under conditions that simulated blood clotting.
