BACKGROUND: Oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) is the most common malignancy of the oral cavity. INTRODUCTION: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photobiomodulation (PBM) are light-based modalities with differing applications but which share overlapping spectral and irradiance requirements. PDT, which uses an exogenous photosensitizer, can be used to impart a selective cytotoxic response in target malignant tissues, while PBM is typically used to stimulate biological responses that are beneficial in healthy tissues. The inherent compatibility in light delivery requirements suggests the potential for exploring interactions between these modalities which could enhance tumor response to PDT.

13CN ion appears to have the greatest potential to probe the heme environment of the ferric heme proteins; however, a resonance of the iron-bound (13)CN ion in ferric heme proteins has not yet been located. We show here the first detection of (13)C NMR signals of the iron-bound (13)CN for heme proteins and their model complexes in an unexpectedly large upfield region. This study demonstrates that the (13)C NMR signal of the iron-bound (13)CN is a sensitive probe to study the nature of the proximal ligand in ferric heme protein.

The immediate response of erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) skin to long-wave ultraviolet radiation (UVR) was studied with the electron microscope. The main finding was severe vascular injury.
