Prominent fungiform papillae in guttate psoriasis.

Three patients presented with widespread guttate psoriasis of explosive onset which involved the palms and soles (exanthematic guttate psoriasis) and followed, in each case, a haemolytic streptococcal throat infection. At the height of the effluorescence the lingual fungiform papillae were very numerous, red and prominent and their subsequent course paralleled that of the skin lesions. This oral finding has not been reported previously in patients with psoriasis.

[Thermo-sodium phototherapy of psoriasis vulgaris].

Report on the treatment of psoriasis in saturated sodium chloride water from a natural source followed by irradiation with ultraviolet UV-A- and UV-B-lights, similar to the treatment at the Dead Sea. Approximately 5335 patients were treated in this manner since 1977. Over 80% of all cases were cleared within 4-6 weeks, whereas 72% of cases with psoriasis-arthritis were improved. This treatment does not influence the rate of relapses. The possible effects on the skin of 27% saturated sodium chloride water is described in detail.

Altered erythrocyte membrane phosphorylation in psoriasis.

Autophosphorylation by [gamma-32P]ATP of erythrocyte membranes from controls, psoriatic patients and patients with skin disorders other than psoriasis was compared by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Compared with controls, membranes from psoriatic patients showed significantly less 32P incorporation in the band 2 region (nomenclature of Fairbanks et al., 1971). In addition, psoriasis and some of the other skin diseases examined displayed decreased phosphorylation in the region of bands 2.9-3 and 4.5-4.8. A new polypeptide band in the 18-20,000 dalton region was also observed in the disease…

Short-duration dithranol therapy for psoriasis.

40 outpatients with psoriasis vulgaris of limited extent were treated with daily brief applications of a 1, 2 or 3% dithranol ointment. The treatment was effective in cases of large plaques, small lesions and guttate psoriasis. There was a very poor therapeutic response in palmoplantar psoriasis and in residual lesions after Ingram's regimen.

Impetigo herpetiformis or generalized pustular psoriasis?

Impetigo herpetiformis was diagnosed in a primigravida woman on clinical, laboratory, and histopathological grounds. This disease should be considered as a rare and serious variant of generalized pustular psoriasis. After initiating prednisone therapy, antepartum registration of fetal heart rate patterns appears necessary to evaluate fetal well-being. Subsequent pregnancies of the patient were not recommended.

Topical colchicine therapy for recalcitrant psoriasis.

Once daily applications of 1.0% colchicine in hydrophilic ointment for 6 to 12 weeks produced substantial resolution of recalcitrant psoriatic plaques, especially those on the trunk. With occlusion, lower concentrations of the drug (0.25% and 0.50%) were usually effective. A thick viscous base (hydrophilic petrolatum) was more effective than a hydrophilic cream base (hydrophilic ointment), presumably because of greater occlusivity. Treatment with topically applied colchicine may be valuable when other measures fail to control localized thick plaques of psoriasis. Its use is still experimental …

Breakthrough Psoriasis in Patients Receiving Biologicals.

BACKGROUND: Biological therapies, including TNF-alpha, IL12/23, IL17 and IL23 antagonists, adequately control a very high number of patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis with an excellent long-term safety profile. However, on occasion, patients on biological therapy with stabilized disease or complete remission report episodes of sudden breakthrough psoriasis. AIM: To study prospectively in a monocentric tertiary setting, the clinical characteristics of patients presenting a sudden breakthrough psoriasis although completely stabilized (PASI 90-100) under biological therapy. MATERIALS AN…
