Correlates of posttraumatic stress disorder in forensic psychiatric outpatients in the Netherlands.

Using a sample of 154 Dutch forensic psychiatric outpatients aged 18-62 years, this study investigated whether risk factors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), mainly identified in nonforensic research, forensic psychiatric factors, and potential comorbid mental disorders were associated with PTSD. Data on demographics, victimization during childhood or adolescence, and forensic psychiatric factors were derived from electronic medical records. Mental disorders were assessed using structured psychiatric interviews and consensus diagnoses were established during weekly case consultations. T

Health and identity: Self-positioning in adolescent chronic fatigue syndrome and juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

The aim of this study is to gain more insight into basic aspects of identity, in relation to adolescent chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). In dialogical self theory, identity is regarded as incorporating multiple self-positions, such as 'I as tired', 'I as pessimistic', or 'I as decisive'. Physical and psychosocial impairment might alter the organization of these self-positions. The Personal Position Repertoire procedure, a quantitative method to analyse the prominence of self-positions, the Child Health Questionnaire, assessing health-related functioning,

The Iowa Longitudinal Study of Recent Onset Psychosis: one-year follow-up of first episode patients.

The natural history of schizophrenia remains unclear. One strategy to further inform this area is to prospectively evaluate individuals early in the course of the disorder, both in terms of symptomatic and psychosocial/occupational functioning. Subjects were recruited into the study if they were in the midst of their first psychiatric hospitalization for a non-'organic' psychotic disorder. Subjects were extensively evaluated at index with semi-structured interviews including the Comprehensive Assessment of Symptoms and History (CASH), and followed at 6-month intervals. Data are presented on 35

Anxiety disorders: a long-term prospective and retrospective follow-up study of former inpatients suffering from an anxiety neurosis or phobia.

Psychopathological status and psychosocial functioning of 40 former inpatients suffering from an anxiety neurosis (ICD 300.0) or phobia (ICD 300.2) were followed up over a period of 6-8 years using standardized instruments. In addition, the course of illness, the utilization of medical services and the periods of work disabilities were assessed. With regard to psychopathology, in more than half of the patients course and outcome could be regarded as chronic and severe; only one third of the patients were free of marked or severe psychopathological symptoms during the 12 months preceding the re…

Ecological resilience and psychosocial utility among adolescents during societal instability: A utility-based economic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent psychosocial well-being has become a major global public health concern, particularly during periods of societal instability. Although ecological resilience systems within families, schools, and peer environments are recognized as important protective factors, little is known about their broader population-health and economic significance. This study examined whether ecological resilience is associated with psychosocial utility and explored its potential economic relevance using a utility-based evaluation framework. METHODS: Using data from 22,818 participants in the Is

A systematic review of specialized psychosocial and complex psychosocial interventions for early psychosis, early depression, early bipolar disorder, and early borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review evaluates specialized psychosocial and complex interventions for early bipolar disorder (BD), early borde … therapy for early psychosis. The most robust effects were reductions in relapse and improvements in psychosocial functioning; additional benefits were observed for symptom burden, remission, treatment discontinuation, and hospital admissions. Benefits were most sustained in longer-duration, community-based programs. For early BD, limited evidence suggests that combining p …

Report of the Psychosocial Outcomes Workgroup of the Nursing and Social Sciences Council of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation: present status of research on psychosocial outcomes in cardiothoracic transplantation: review and recommendations for the field.

Cardiothoracic transplantation's success at prolonging life--and its economic costs--must be considered relative to its psychosocial benefits and costs. Moreover, psychosocial outcomes themselves influence long-term post-transplant morbidity and mortality rates. Although psychosocial outcomes--encompassing patients' physical, psychologic and social functioning, their management of their medical regimen and global quality of life--are the focus of many recent studies, these investigations have yet to yield many evidence-based interventions that are routinely applied to improve patient outcomes.

Using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 restructured form to predict functioning after treatment for borderline personality disorder: A machine learning approach.

Insight into predictors of functioning after treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) is limited, despite growing recognition that more focus on other aspects of recovery, especially psychosocial functioning, is warranted. The present study explored the utility of a widely used omnibus assessment instrument, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF), to predict change in functioning during treatment for BPD. Data were obtained from a randomized clinical trial into the effectiveness of 2-year evidence-based treatment for BPD (dialectical behavior…

Epilepsy and Neurocognitive Profile in Dystrophinopathies: Insights from Caregiver Perspectives.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dystrophinopathies, including Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy, are multisystem disorders characterized by progressive motor decline, epilepsy, cognitive impairments, and psychosocial challenges. However, data from Turkey, particularly from caregivers, remain limited. This study evaluated caregiver-reported outcomes of motor function, cognitive abilities, language, attention, fine motor skills, social functioning, and seizure history in dystrophinopathies. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 267 primary caregivers using a structured questionna

Veterans in Northern Ireland: Evaluation of chronic pain experience, service type, and physical and mental health functioning.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is common and associated with disruptions in quality of life (QoL) and psychosocial functioning. These issues are particularly pronounced in veterans, although data in this regard primarily come from the United States Veterans Affairs System, meaning less is known regarding veterans of other countries and regions. The present study evaluated veterans living in Northern Ireland (NI), a region with historic high rates of both chronic pain and psychosocial difficulties associated with the decades-long period of civil and military conflict preceding the 1999 armistice (the…

Predictors of functional impairment at assessment and functional improvement after treatment at a national digital mental health service.

Mental disorders are associated with impairment to daily functioning, which affects both the individual and society. Despite this, most research on treatment outcome only report symptom change. Self-reported days out of role (DOR) is a simple measure of functional impairment used in many population studies. The current study sought to report on the degree of functional impairment measured by DOR in a clinical sample at assessment, the factors associated with this impairment, the predictors of functional improvement after treatment and the relationship between symptomatic and functional change.

Infectious mononucleosis: psychological symptoms during acute and subacute phases of illness.

Although anecdotal reports suggest that anxiety and depressive disorders may be precipitated by acute infectious mononucleosis (AIM), there are few population-based studies measuring distress and psychiatric disorder during and after infection. The purpose of this research was to study the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and psychological distress in patients with AIM at initial infection and over the subsequent 6 months. In addition, we examined the correlation of baseline biopsychosocial factors with distress at 2 and 6 months postillness. A population-based cohort with AIM was surveyed

The psychological impact of adult-onset craniopharyngioma: A follow-up survey.

PURPOSE: Adult-onset craniopharyngioma (AoC) is a rare benign tumour of the sellar/parasellar region associated with significant physical morbidity and a poorer quality of life. Limited medical studies have documented the psychological impact of AoC, but psychological studies may be better placed to investigate these effects. This study used an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design to develop and administer a new patient-informed survey to quantitatively assess the psychosocial consequences of AoC. METHODS: A 30-item questionnaire was developed based on previous qualitative interviews wi

The psychological well-being and appearance concerns of patients presenting with ptosis.

PURPOSE: Ptosis affects both the function and appearance of the eyes and face, because of drooping of the eyelids. Previous research has focused on functional impairment; however, similar appearance altering eye conditions have been demonstrated to have major impacts on psychosocial functioning. METHODS: This study examines the psychological well-being and appearance concerns of patients presenting with ptosis recruited from Bristol Eye Hospital using validated questionnaires focusing on demographics and psychosocial factors before surgery. RESULTS: Patients reported higher levels of anxiety…

Pediatric Bipolar Disorder.

The diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BD) in youth is confusing and controversial. Controversy notwithstanding, youth diagnosed with BD have high behavioral health needs and are at elevated risk for problematic long-term psychosocial functioning and complex psychiatric medication regimens. Pediatricians and other primary care providers (PCPs) can play an important role in the assessment and treatment of youth diagnosed with BD and the recently created and also controversial diagnosis of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD). This article provides information on the definitions, background…

Health-related quality of life and psychosocial developmental trajectory in young female beneficiaries with JIA.

OBJECTIVES: It is generally recognized that for all children the fulfilling of age-specific psychosocial developmental tasks in childhood is of great importance to adjustment in adult life, including participation in society. For young adults with JIA this is more difficult. We assume that the achievement of psychosocial milestones while growing up (psychosocial developmental trajectory) is also related to labour participation. A proportion of all young adults with JIA have to apply for disability benefits. This study assessed the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and the psychosocial dev
