Cholera outbreak trends in Nigeria: policy recommendations and innovative approaches to prevention and treatment.

Cholera, an acute diarrheal infection from ingesting contaminated food or water, remains a significant public health threat in Nigeria, especially in areas lacking safe water and sanitation. Characterized by severe watery diarrhea, cholera can cause dehydration and death if untreated. Historical data shows cholera's endemic nature in Nigeria, with notable outbreaks since 1970, including major ones in 1991, 1999, 2010, 2018, and 2024. According to a descriptive study in Nigeria, the 1991 outbreak reported 59,478 cases and 7,654 deaths, with a Case Fatality Ratio (CFR) of 12.9%. In 2010, there w

Immunity to diphtheria among refugees in southern Italy.

This study assessed the immune status against diphtheria of a sample of refugees (mainly Kosovars and Kurds) in southern Italy (Puglia). The 54.8% of 1128 subjects showed full protection against diphtheria, 30.1% had basic protection and 15.1% resulted seronegative for antitoxin antibody. Only from 45.9 to 73.9% of 0-10 years old refugees were fully protected while from 12.3 to 24.2% were seronegative to diphtheria with the poorest protection rate among Kurdish children from Turkey. Kosovars showed the highest protection rate to diphtheria whereas data suggest a probable endemic level of dipht

From hesitancy to hope: charting India's path to widespread HPV immunisation.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer remains the leading gynaecological malignancy in India, with a disproportionate burden among underserved populations. Although HPV vaccines have been available since 2008, national coverage has been hindered by safety concerns, misinformation, sociocultural resistance, and logistical barriers. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS & POLICY IMPLICATIONS: The introduction of Cervavac, an indigenously developed quadrivalent HPV vaccine, marks a pivotal shift in India's immunisation landscape. By improving affordability and supply stability, Cervavac offers a sustainable path forward. S

Malaria and COVID-19: commonalities, intersections and implications for sustaining malaria control.

The devastating impact of infectious disease outbreaks and pandemics on health systems could be overwhelming especially when there is an overlap in clinical presentations with other disease conditions. A case in point is the disruptive effect of the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak on health service delivery and its consequences for malaria management in the affected West and Central African countries between 2014 and 2016. This could be the case with the current infectious disease pandemic (COVID-19) the world is experiencing as malaria illness shares many symptoms with COVID-19 illness. Caused b

Improving Decision-Making for Population Health in Nonhealth Sectors in Urban Environments: the Example of the Transportation Sector in Three Megacities-the 3-D Commission.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) represent a significant global public health burden. As more countries experience both epidemiologic transition and increasing urbanization, it is clear that we need approaches to mitigate the growing burden of NCDs. Large and growing urban environments play an important role in shaping risk factors that influence NCDs, pointing to the ineluctable need to engage sectors beyond the health sector in these settings if we are to improve health. By way of one example, the transportation sector plays a critical role in building and sustaining health outcomes in urban

Mpox diagnosis at POC.

The increasing number of Monkeypox (Mpox) cases in non-endemic countries resulted in the WHO declaring a public health emergency of international concern. Accurate and timely diagnosis of Mpox has a critical role in containing the spread of infection. Diagnosis currently relies on PCR, which requires trained personnel and complex laboratory infrastructure. Thus, the development of point-of-care (POC) tools are essential to facilitate rapid, accurate, and user-friendly diagnosis. Here, we review POC diagnostic tools available for Mpox. We also discuss bottlenecks preventing the widespread imple

The Rising Challenge of Stroke in Iraq and the Importance of Endovascular Centers.

Stroke is a critical public health issue in Iraq, where the rising incidence is met with insufficient specialized care, often leading to severe disability or mortality. This editorial highlights the urgent need for establishing endovascular centers across the country to address these gaps. Endovascular interventions, such as mechanical thrombectomy, have proven effective in reducing stroke-related mortality and long-term disability when administered within a narrow treatment window. However, Iraq faces numerous challenges, including limited resources, infrastructure deficits, and a shortage of

Molecular methods used in clinical laboratory: prospects and pitfalls.

The role of molecular detection, identification and typing or fingerprinting of microorganisms has shifted gradually from the academic world to the routine diagnostic laboratory. Molecular methods have been used increasingly over the past decade to improve the sensitivity, specificity and turn-around time in the clinical laboratory. Molecular methods have also been used to identify new and nonculturable agents. Many high-throughput molecular tests are now available commercially, which impacts on the infrastructure in many of the diagnostic laboratories. In this paper, we take an overall look a

Public health problems of urbanization.

Developing countries have been peasant societies. The cities in traditional societies have been pilgrimage centres, seats of administration and educational centres. These cities had homogeneous relationships with the villages. Industrialization has developed modern megacities whose way of life is heterogeneous with that in the villages. Rural poverty has pushed villagers to the cities, which were never planned to accommodate immigrants. Public health and social problems have arisen lowering the quality of life. Communicable diseases among the urban poor coexist with non-communicable diseases a

Transdisciplinary training to address challenges in genomic epidemiology of infectious diseases.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the emergence and detection of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern highlighted the pivotal role of genomic epidemiology in public health decision and policy making. The pandemic also revealed a need for genomic epidemiologists to effectively engage with a broader audience, including policymakers and the public. To address this need, we introduced a new transdisciplinary training workshop, "From Trees to Public Health Policy," at the Virus Evolution and Molecular Epidemiology (VEME) 2022 workshop in Panama City, designed to foster an enhanced understanding of the curren
