Epidemiological Study of Outpatients in Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis Clinics - Tianjin Municipality, China, 2020.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ON THIS TOPIC?: Rabies remains a serious public health problem in China. The only way to prevent the fatal disease was through timely and adequate post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: Among all the 126,133 cases visited Tianjin PEP clinics during 2020, more than 90% of the patients were injured by domestic dogs or cats, and about 70% of the animals received vaccination. Most outpatients have knowledge of rabies and show high compatibility with PEP. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICE?: To better control rabies, we need to pay …

Real-world data for precision public health of noncommunicable diseases: a scoping review.

BackgroundGlobal public health action to address noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) requires new approaches. NCDs are primarily prevented and managed in the community where there is little investment in digital health systems and analytics; this has created a data chasm and relatively silent burden of disease. The nascent but rapidly emerging area of precision public health offers exciting new opportunities to transform our approach to NCD prevention. Precision public health uses routinely collected real-world data on determinants of health (social, environmental, behavioural, biomedical and comm

Developmental literacy and epistemic dignity as primary child protection: a developmentally staged, disability-inclusive public-health framework for preventing adverse childhood experiences.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), toxic stress, relational insecurity, and structural adversity are major public-health concerns for children and adolescents, but ACE evidence should not be treated as an individual diagnostic score or deterministic prognosis. This Hypothesis and Theory article proposes developmental literacy and epistemic dignity as linked upstream constructs for primary child protection. Developmental literacy is defined as developmentally staged and disability-inclusive neurobiopsychosocial knowledge and skills concerning bodies, emotions, stress, attachment, co-regulati

The rush to risk when interrogating the relationship between methamphetamine use and sexual practice among gay and bisexual men.

Much research concerning drug use in the context of sexual activity among gay and bisexual men derives from public health scholarship. In this paper, we critically examine how the relationship between methamphetamine use and sexual risk practice is treated and understood in this body of research. While public health has made important contributions to establishing the link between methamphetamine use and sexual risk-taking, the precise nature of the relationship is not well defined. This creates space for ungrounded assumptions about methamphetamine use to take hold. We outline what appear to

Research that influences policy and practice - characteristics of operational research to improve malaria control in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Much communicable disease control research has had little impact on local control programme policy and practice for want of an operational component. The operational research model - the systematic search for knowledge on interventions, tools or strategies that enhance programme effectiveness - is gaining recognition as an appropriate method for addressing perplexing questions within public health programmes. METHODS: A series of operational research studies were conducted to refine malaria diagnosis in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa between 1995 and 1999. The grounded theory a

Translational applications of circadian research: connecting chronobiology to medicine.

Chronobiology has advanced scientifically since 2000. Translating this knowledge and approach to medicine can alter diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, and improve health. Adding time-of-day (or time-of-year) information is both a concrete and conceptual change to clinical practice and public health relevant to humans and other animals, with low implementation costs. Successful translation of chronobiology to medicine requires new methods, training, and organizational and regulatory action.

Historical Perspectives on Scrofula: Competing Medical Discourses and Public Health Implications at the Turn of the 20th Century.

This article examines how scrofula was classified as a distinct disease in Danish medical history around the turn of the 20th century. Dr. Niemeyer, a naturopathic advocate, attributed scrofula to an unhealthy composition of bodily fluids, whereas Dr. Geill viewed it as a tuberculous condition and a precursor to pulmonary tuberculosis. While they differed on causation - particularly regarding heredity - they agreed on prevention strategies, emphasizing fresh air, skin care, nutrition, and physical activity to reduce contagion and improve children's resilience. Physicians advocated guiding chil

[Insights from plague control from a "One Health" perspective: Wu Lien-teh and the centennial legacy of public health in China].

Taking Dr. Wu Lien-teh's contributions to the containment of the 1910 Northeastern Plague as a starting point, this article briefly examines a century of development in China's public health and explores the application of the "One Health" concept. It first outlines Dr. Wu's groundbreaking achievements and enduring institutional legacies, including his pioneering scientific methods, the establishment of a modern public health system, and mechanisms for talent cultivation. Subsequently, the article analyzes Dr. Wu's containment strategies through the lens of "One Health", demonstrating that his

Adult immunization practices, challenges and opportunities in Central America and the Caribbean: Advisory board proceedings.

As individuals age, they become increasingly prone to infectious diseases, many of which are vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). Adult immunization has become a public health priority in the modern era, yet VPDs vaccination rates for adults are low worldwide. In Central America and Caribbean, national recommendations and vaccination practices in adults differ across countries, and adult vaccination coverage data are limited. An advisory board comprised infectious disease experts, pulmonologists, geriatricians, occupational health, and public health professionals for Central America and Domini

Priority setting in health: development and application of a multi-criteria algorithm for the population of New Zealand's Waikato region.

BackgroundPriority setting in a climate of diverse needs and limited resources is one of the most significant challenges faced by health care policymakers. This paper develops and applies a comprehensive multi-criteria algorithm to help determine the relative importance of health conditions that affect a defined population.MethodsOur algorithm is implemented in the context of the Waikato District Health Board (WDHB) in New Zealand, which serves approximately 10% of the New Zealand population. Strategic priorities of the WDHB are operationalized into five criteria along which the algorithm is s

Individual and community-level determinants of skin-to-skin contact in Somaliland: a multilevel analysis of the 2020 demographic and health survey data.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal mortality remains a significant public health challenge in Somaliland. Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is an evidence-based intervention proven to improve newborn survival and maternal health outcomes. However, its implementation in low-resource settings like Somaliland is often limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of SSC and identify the individual and community-level factors associated with its practice between mothers and newborns in Somaliland. METHOD: This study utilized a cross-sectional design, analyzing secondary data from the 2020 Somaliland Health

Developing a Public Health Quality Tool for Mobile Health Clinics to Assess and Improve Care.

This report describes the development and deployment of the Public Health Quality Tool (PHQTool), an online resource designed to help mobile health clinics (MHCs) assess and improve the quality of their public health services. MHCs provide essential clinical and public health services to underserved populations but have historically lacked tools to assess and improve the quality of their work. To address this gap, the PHQTool was developed as an online, evidence-based, self-assessment resource for MHCs, hosted on the Mobile Health Map (MHMap) platform. This report documents the collaborative d

Different public health geographies of the 2001 foot and mouth disease epidemic: 'citizen' versus 'professional' epidemiology.

Recently, there have been calls for health geographers to add critical and theoretical debate to 'post-medical' geographies, whilst at the same time informing 'new' public health strategies (Soc. Sci. Med. 50(9)1273; Area 33(4) (2002) 361). In this paper we reflect on how, alongside 'professional epidemiologies', 'citizen epidemiologies' can have credibility in informing public health policy and practice. We do this by drawing on mixed method and participatory research that used a citizens' panel to articulate the health and social outcomes of the 2001 foot and mouth disease disaster. We consi

CDC Grand Rounds: Public Health Strategies to Prevent Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.

Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is a drug withdrawal syndrome that most commonly occurs in infants after in utero exposure to opioids, although other substances have also been associated with the syndrome (1). NAS usually appears within 48-72 hours of birth with a constellation of clinical signs, including central nervous system irritability (e.g., tremors), gastrointestinal dysfunction (e.g., feeding difficulties), and temperature instability (1) (Box 1). Opioid exposure during pregnancy might result from clinician-approved use of prescription opioids for pain relief; misuse or abuse of pr

[Continuing or discontinuing BCG revaccination in adolescents].

BCG revaccination was introduced in Brazil in the mid-90's but no study has evaluated vaccine coverage through direct assessment of the scar. BCG scars were assessed in 2,785 public school adolescents, aged 13 to 14 years, in Southeastern Brazil, between September 2001 and May 2002. The prevalence rate of revaccination was 64.3% (95% CI: 62.5-66.0). Despite the efforts to implement and sustain revaccination, continuing this practice should be reevaluated by public health authorities due to the lack of evidence on its effectiveness.

What Can You Say When You Can't Say Everything?

Today's decisions about what and how to communicate about population health occur amid very real fears and expectations of harsh reprisal that have had far-reaching impacts, both for people's health and for the health professions. It is in this context that health researchers must share their findings with the public and policy makers, prevent confusion, and avoid harming groups already facing systemic barriers to health. In every communication context-from research papers to quotes on the nightly news-people must make thoughtful choices about what to say. Communication, therefore, is always a
