Emergency care requirements in alcohol-related presentations: a multi-site observational study.

Objective Globally, the social and economic costs of alcohol-related disorders are considerable. The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics, clinical care requirements and outcomes of alcohol-related presentations (ARPs) to emergency departments (EDs). Methods A multi-site observational study was undertaken in Queensland, Australia. We selected a random sample of 2720 presentations to four public hospital EDs between April 2016 and August 2017, in which the treating clinician perceived that alcohol contributed to the presentation. Routinely collected demographic, clinical, outc

Application of Two-Dimensional Entropy Measures to Detect the Radiographic Signs of Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis in an Equine Model.

Dental disorders are a serious health problem in equine medicine, their early recognition benefits the long-term general health of the horse. Most of the initial signs of Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EOTRH) syndrome concern the alveolar aspect of the teeth, thus, the need for early recognition radiographic imaging. This study is aimed to evaluate the applicability of entropy measures to quantify the radiological signs of tooth resorption and hypercementosis as well as to enhance radiographic image quality in order to facilitate the identification of the signs of E

Predicting the need for transfer and interventional angiography for patients with acute colonic haemorrhage in a regional setting.

BACKGROUND: Radiological angioembolization is an important strategy in management of acute colonic bleeding. Due to requirement for specialized interventional radiology, many hospitals rely on transfer for this service. This study aimed to identify patient and clinical factors associated with positive (blush) computed tomography mesenteric angiogram (CTMA) or need for invasive angiography. The secondary aim was to identify a patient population who may forego transfer and be safely managed in a regional centre. METHODS: All presentations to Central Coast Local Health District with colonic blee

Responding to chemical, biological, or nuclear terrorism: the indirect and long-term health effects may present the greatest challenge.

The possibility of terrorists employing chemical, biological, or nuclear/ radiological (CBN) materials has been a concern since 1995 when sarin gas was dispersed in a Tokyo subway. Contingency planning almost exclusively involved detection. containment, and emergency health care for mass casualties. However, it is clear that even small-scale CBN incidents--like the recent spread of anthrax spores through the mail--can cause widespread confusion, fear, and psychological stress that have lasting effects on the health of affected communities and on a nation's sense of well-being. More emphasis th

Long-Term Clinical and Radiologic Outcome Following Surgical Treatment of Lumbar Spondylodiscitis: A Retrospective Bicenter Study.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Spinal instrumentation for spondylodiskitis (SD) remains highly controversial. To date, surgical data are limited to relatively small case series with short-term follow-up data. In this study, we wanted to elucidate the biomechanical, surgical, and neurologic long-term outcomes in these patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis from two German primary care hospitals over a 9-year period (2005-2014) was performed. The inclusion criteria were (1) pyogenic lumbar SD, (2) minimum follow-up of 1 year, and (3) surgical instrumentation. The clinical and radi

Exposure Time Dependence of Operators' Head Entrance Air Kerma in Interventional Radiology Measured by TLD-100H Chips.

Interventional radiology offers minimally invasive procedures guided by real-time imaging, reducing surgical risks and enhancing patient recovery. While beneficial to patients, these advancements increase occupational hazards for physicians due to chronic exposure to ionizing radiation. This exposure raises health risks like radiation-induced cataracts, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Despite regulations like the European Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM, which sets limits on whole-body and eye lens doses, no dose limits exist for the brain and meninges, since the brain has traditionally

Study protocol: first nationwide comparative audit of acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding in the UK.

INTRODUCTION: Acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB) is a common indication for emergency hospitalisation worldwide. In contrast to upper GIB, patient characteristics, modes of investigation, transfusion, treatment and outcomes are poorly described. There are minimal clinical guidelines to inform care pathways and the use of endoscopy, including (diagnostic and therapeutic yields), interventional radiology and surgery are poorly defined. As a result, there is potential for wide variation in practice and clinical outcomes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The UK Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding Audi

Acute pneumonitis associated with low dose methotrexate treatment for rheumatoid arthritis: report of five cases and review of published reports.

BACKGROUND: Low dose methotrexate has become established in the treatment of refractory rheumatoid arthritis. Until recently it has been considered that the use of a low dose regimen (< 20 mg/week) would avoid the pulmonary toxicity associated with the higher doses prescribed in malignant disease. Although initial experience with low dose methotrexate was encouraging, an increasing number of cases of an acute, life threatening pneumonitis are being reported in patients with refractory rheumatoid arthritis. PATIENTS: Since 1984 43 patients with refractory rheumatoid arthritis have been establi
