There are no published case reports of esomeprazole-induced photoallergic dermatitis. We report here a 58-year-old lady with prior history of propylthiouracil and carbimazole-induced photoallergy, who presented with heartburn and dysphagia. She was diagnosed to have erosive esophagitis and was treated with esomeprazole, following which she developed photoallergic dermatitis. It improved on cessation of the drug and did not recur on subsequent treatment with ranitidine. Naranjo score for this adverse drug event was 8, thereby making it a probable adverse drug reaction. Fungal colonization was observed in the duodenal biopsy specimens of a nine-year-old girl who complained of anorexia and epigastric pain. Endoscopy revealed gastric redness and Geotrichum candidum was identified in the duodenum by histopathology and tissue culture. Immunologic work-up showed low serum levels of IgA and IgM. AIM: The study of alkaline gastric secretion in health and disease and its changes in response to blockers of H2-histamine receptors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The trial enrolled 74 patients with duodenal ulcer (DU), 28 patients with chronic gastric (CG) and 16 healthy controls. The secretion was studied initially, in administration of ranitidine, in stimulation with hydrochloric acid.

Campylobacter pylori (Cp) infection has been demonstrated in 59 of 65 (91%) patients with gastric or duodenal ulcer. Patients were included in a double blind study with ranitidine or famotidine for 4-8 weeks. After therapy, all gastric and duodenal ulcers healed but Cp remained in all previously infected patients, associated with chronic inflammation of gastric mucosa. The anti-ulcer activity of the oil and mucilage obtained from flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) was evaluated in a rat model of ethanol-induced gastric ulcer. Our results show that pretreatment of rats with flaxseed oil and flaxseed mucilage significantly reduced the number and length of gastric ulcers induced by ethanol. Flaxseed oil was more effective than flaxseed mucilage in reducing the number of ulcers. Medical therapy of peptic ulcers in elderly patients should depend on drugs which have to be administered only once daily. In addition, the ideal compound should have minimal side effects as well as minimal, if any, interactions with concomitant forms of therapy. From this point of view, acid-inhibitory drugs are preferable to other anti-ulcer drugs, the latter having little importance in advanced age.
