The refractions of 1648 children aged 11 to 13 months are reported. Atropine 1% was used for cycloplegia. 11.83% of the children had bilateral hypermetropia of +2.00 or more D. 13.23% of them had +1.50 or more D astigmatism in one or both eyes, and 6.5% had anisometropia. Anisometropia was significantly (P=0.000 001%) associated with bilateral hypermetropia, but even more significantly (P=0.000 000 4%) associated with astigmatism of +1.50 or more D in one or both eyes.

INTRODUCTION: Spectacle non-compliance is a significant problem in pediatric patients, and may have a variety of consequences. Non-compliance with myopic refractive correction could be secondary to a variety of issues, including age, discomfort, gender, urban vs. rural residence, presenting visual acuity, and degree of refractive error. We observed a phenomenon in our pediatric patients with retinopathy of prematurity that may add another possible explanation: incorrect prescription due to measures of increased, rather than decreased, myopia after cycloplegia.

PURPOSE: To investigate changes in the spherical equivalent (SE) refractive error and astigmatism in a pediatric referral population in Korea with longitudinal follow-up and to evaluate the effect of risk factors on changes in refractive error.
METHODS: This was a retrospective case series. In total, 221 patients who presented to a tertiary care hospital when aged 3 to 9 years and who underwent at least 10 years of follow-up were enrolled. The patients were divided into groups in terms of the initial extent of SE refractive error, the initial extent of astigmatism, sex, and ocular alignment.

The age, sex, refractive error, symptoms, history of trauma, and objective evidence of trauma were evaluated in 50 cases of retinal detachment caused by dialysis. The location of the dialysis, associated ocular and retinal findings, reattachment rate, and visual acuity results of these 50 cases are reviewed. Analysis of the cases in this series strongly suggests that virtually all retinal dialyses result from blunt ocular trauma and that a genetic weakness in the inferotemporal quadrant is not an important factor in the development of retinal dialyses.
