Aggressive and violent behavior in a population of psychiatric inpatients.

The aim of this observational study was to assess the rates of aggressive and violent behavior in patients admitted to an Italian emergency psychiatric unit and to explore possible risk factors for patient violence. In a population of 313 consecutive patients, we considered aggressive or violent behavior, rated according to a hierarchy from no aggressive behavior to serious physical violence. The results confirm that young age, psychotic symptoms, excitement, akathisia, and diagnosis of personality disorder are risk factors for violent behavior. The unique and major finding of the study is the

Intramuscular pharmacological treatment and mechanical restraint duration in acute psychiatric settings: Implications for nursing practice - A retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical restraint is used in psychiatric settings despite international efforts to minimize restrictive practices. Intramuscular medication is routinely administered during the restraint episode as rapid tranquillization with the aim of achieving behavioral control and earlier removal, but evidence regarding its effect on restraint duration in psychiatric inpatient settings is lacking. AIM: To examine whether intramuscular pharmacological interventions are associated with restraint duration in acute psychiatric wards using standardized dosing. METHODS: Retrospective observatio

Compulsory admissions, mechanical restraints and staff attitudes toward coercion in a sample of psychiatric wards in Italy.

Although the frequency of compulsory admissions (CA) to inpatient psychiatric care in Italy is low, it remains a sensitive component of psychiatric practice, together with coercion and mechanical restraint (MR). In such practices, the staff's attitude may play a role. We wanted to identify risk factors for CAs and MRs in Italian psychiatric services. A total of 18 General Hospital Psychiatric Wards (GHPWs) collected data over 12 months, reporting GHPWs' features, staff, training on CAs reduction, restrictions, protocols with Emergency, user involvement and right advocacy, number and characteri

Identification of genes and pathways associated with chronic restraint stress-induced anxiodepressive-like behaviors in female mice by transcriptomic and genome-wide DNA methylation combinational-analysis.

Women are at a higher risk for depression and anxiety than men, yet research into the biological mechanisms and pharmacological treatments for female-specific mental disorders, such as perinatal and perimenopausal depression, remains insufficient. DNA methylation, a key epigenetic modification, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of depression. In this study, we exposed female mice to chronic restraint stress (CRS) for 2 weeks, which induced both depression-like and anxiety-like behaviors. We then collected genomic DNA and total RNA from the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a brain region

Sex shapes phenotype-linked metabolic signatures of stress exposure in the mouse hypothalamus and pituitary.

In chronic stress-induced anxiodepression, sex differences in the dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis are well-documented, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unexplored. This study investigated sex-specific metabolic signatures associated with stress exposure in the hypothalamus and pituitary, given the potential significance of brain metabolism in sex-related mechanisms underlying anxiodepression. Utilizing a chronic restraint stress (CRS) model, we conducted a comparative analysis of the metabolic profiles in female and male mice to identify disti

The influence of paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus soluble guanylate cyclase on autonomic and neuroendocrine responses to acute restraint stress in rats.

The paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) regulates physiological and behavioural responses evoked by stressful stimuli, but the local neurochemical and signalling mechanisms involved are not completely understood. The soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) within the PVN is implicated in autonomic and cardiovascular control in rodents under resting conditions. However, the involvement of PVN sGC-mediated signalling in stress responses is unknown. Therefore, we investigated the role of sGC within the PVN in cardiovascular, autonomic, neuroendocrine, and local neuronal responses to acute r

BNST CRF receptor type 1 modulates mechanical hypersensitivity induced by adolescent alcohol exposure in adult female mice.

RATIONALE: Alcohol exposure during adolescence has been linked to long-lasting behavioral consequences, contributing to the development of alcohol use disorder. Negative affect and chronic pain during alcohol withdrawal are critical factors influencing problematic alcohol use and relapse. Our previous research demonstrated that adolescent intermittent ethanol (AIE) vapor exposure elicits sex-specific negative affect-like behavior in adult mice following stress exposure. Additionally, AIE induces persistent mechanical hypersensitivity, which is accompanied by increased activation of corticotrop

Worker and perceived team climate factors influence the use of restraint and seclusion in youth residential treatment centers: Results from a mixed-method longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Restraint and seclusion (R&S) are controversial methods of intervention aimed at protecting children from immediate harm in residential treatment centers (RTC). Previous studies have mainly focused on situational factors and youth characteristics to predict its use. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to evaluate the role other potential predictors could play in the decision to use R&S, namely characteristics of residential workers and their perceived team climate. METHODS: For two months, a total of 132 residential workers from different RTC in the greater Montreal area completed week

Antidepressant-like effects of β-caryophyllene on restraint plus stress-induced depression.

Chronic stress is depressogenic by altering neurotrophic and neuroinflammatory environments of the organism. The endocannabinoid system controls cognitive and emotional responses related with stress through the interaction with endocannabinoid receptors. β-Caryophyllene (BCP) is a CB2 agonist that exhibited anti-inflammatory, analgesic effects but minimal psychoactive effects. To test if BCP exhibits antidepressant-like action, animals were chronically restrained with additional stressors for 28 days, and BCP (25, 50, 100 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally injected once a day during the stress infli

Development of an Assay Method to Search for Compounds Inhibiting Stress-Enhanced Allergy.

Stress exacerbates allergic disorders such as atopic dermatitis and asthma. It is also an important factor affecting blood flow (BF). Allergic reactions also affect blood flow. For example, we observed that mice sensitized with hen egg-white lysozyme (HEL) have decreased BF during the allergy induction phase. Based on this finding, we established a model for evaluating chronic restraint stress-enhanced allergies. Mice were sensitized with 12.5 µg/head of HEL on day 0, then restrained for 90 min daily on days 1-3, 5, and 6 in a modified 50 mL polystyrene conical centrifuge tube with multiple ai

Multiple Treatments of Pediatric Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (pCIMT): A Clinical Cohort Study.

Pediatric constraint-induced movement therapy (pCIMT) is one of the most efficacious treatments for children with cerebral palsy (CP). Distinctive components of pCIMT include constraint of the less impaired upper extremity (UE), high-intensity therapy for the more impaired UE (≥ 3 hr/day, many days per week, for multiple weeks), use of shaping techniques combined with repetitive task practice, and bimanual transfer. A critical issue is whether multiple treatments of pCIMT produce additional benefit. In a clinical cohort (mean age = 31 mo) of 28 children with asymmetrical CP whose parents sough

Nurse staffing impact on quality of care in nursing homes: a systematic review of longitudinal studies.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between nurse staffing and quality of care (QoC) in nursing homes continues to receive major attention. The evidence supporting this relationship, however, is weak because most studies employ a cross-sectional design. This review summarizes the findings from recent longitudinal studies. METHODS: In April 2013, the databases PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and PsycINFO were systematically searched. Studies were eligible if they (1) examined the relationship between nurse staffing and QoC outcomes, (2) included only nursing home data, (3) were original research articles des

Six years after a modified constraint induced movement therapy (CIMT) program--what happens when the children have become young adults?

The aim is to describe the development of hand function in young adults with unilateral cerebral palsy (CP), who participated in a 2-week Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) camp 6 years earlier. Eleven participants, 16-21 years at follow-up, were assessed at three occasions during 2005 and once in 2011. At the 6-year follow-up, performance on the Assisting Hand Assessment and the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function test remained unchanged (P > 0.05) from the first assessment before the camp. Grip strength (Grippit®) increased in both the involved (+80.9%) and non-involved hand (+94.4%) (P < 0.

Cervical neural space narrowing during simulated rear crashes with anti-whiplash systems.

PURPOSE: Chronic radicular symptoms have been documented in whiplash patients, potentially caused by cervical neural tissue compression during an automobile rear crash. Our goals were to determine neural space narrowing of the lower cervical spine during simulated rear crashes with whiplash protection system (WHIPS) and active head restraint (AHR) and to compare these data to those obtained with no head restraint (NHR). We extrapolated our results to determine the potential for cord, ganglion, and nerve root compression. METHODS: Our model, consisting of a human neck specimen within a BioRID
