The impact of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on recovery after intensive, muscle damaging, maximal speed training in professional team sports players.

OBJECTIVES: During congested fixture periods in team sports, limited recovery time and increased travel hinder the implementation of many recovery strategies; thus alternative methods are required. We examined the impact of a neuromuscular electrical stimulation device on 24-h recovery from an intensive training session in professional players. DESIGN: Twenty-eight professional rugby and football academy players completed this randomised and counter-balanced study, on 2 occasions, separated by 7 days. METHODS: After baseline perceived soreness, blood (lactate and creatine kinase) and saliva

Respiratory modulation of neurophysiology and symptoms in athletes with sports-related concussion: a randomized crossover trial.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the effects of two breathing interventions on athletes with persistent post-concussive symptoms. Resonance breathing (RB) is a slow breathing technique at an individual's resonance frequency. Pelvic floor resonance breathing (PRB) combines diaphragmatic breathing with pelvic floor muscle activation. METHODS: A randomized crossover trial was conducted using a 3-1-3 week design. Two intervention phases were separated by a 1-week washout period. Twenty-six male rugby athletes with persistent post-concussive symptoms were included. Participants were assigned to dif

Optimizing Iron-Deficiency Screening for Female Athletes: Do We Need to Consider the Menstrual Cycle?

We examined factors that inform iron-deficiency screening practices in female athletes, with a focus on the menstrual cycle. Twenty-four National Rugby League athletes attended a 5-week training camp (age 21.6 ± 3.4 years old, body mass: 76.3 ± 12.1 kg, height: 164.9 ± 4.6 cm). Athletes were either naturally cycling (athleteNC; n = 11) or using hormonal contraception (athleteHC; n = 13). Venous blood samples were collected during Phases 1, 2, and 4 of the menstrual cycle in athleteNC for determination of iron status. Three equally spaced, corresponding time points were sampled in athleteHC. Ev

Effect of Menstrual Cycle Phase and Hormonal Contraceptives on Resting Metabolic Rate and Body Composition.

The cyclical changes in sex hormones across the menstrual cycle (MC) are associated with various biological changes that may alter resting metabolic rate (RMR) and body composition estimates. Hormonal contraceptive (HC) use must also be considered given their impact on endogenous sex hormone concentrations and synchronous exogenous profiles. The purpose of this study was to determine if RMR and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry body composition estimates change across the MC and differ compared with HC users. This was accomplished during a 5-week training camp involving naturally cycling athlet

Rider Energy Expenditure During High Intensity Horse Activity.

Despite the fact that horseback riding is a popular sport, there is little information available on horseback riding as a physical activity. The objective of this experiment was to quantify energy expenditure of participants (n=20) during three riding tests: a 45min walk-trot-canter ride (WTC), a reining pattern ride and a cutting simulation ride while wearing a telemetric gas analyzer. Total energy expenditure (tEE), mean and peak metabolic equivalents of task (MET), heart rate (HR), respiratory frequency (RF), relative oxygen consumption (relVO2), and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) were as

The use of continuous spectral analysis for the assessment of postural stability changes after sports-related concussion.

Impaired postural stability is associated with a variety of pathologies including sports-related concussion (SRC). Quantification of centre of pressure (COP) movement is the most common focus of instrumented assessment. Frequency-domain COP analyses have focused primarily on summary measures or pre-defined frequency bands but continuous analysis may provide novel and complementary insight into pathological control mechanisms. Our aims were (i) to compare post-SRC COP trajectory changes identified using clinician scores (Modified Balance Error Scoring System (M-BESS)), time-domain COP variables

The Reproducibility of Blood Acid Base Responses in Male Collegiate Athletes Following Individualised Doses of Sodium Bicarbonate: A Randomised Controlled Crossover Study.

BACKGROUND: Current evidence suggests sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) should be ingested based upon the individualised alkalotic peak of either blood pH or bicarbonate (HCO3-) because of large inter-individual variations (10-180 min). If such a strategy is to be practical, the blood analyte response needs to be reproducible. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the degree of reproducibility of both time to peak (TTP) and absolute change in blood pH, HCO3- and sodium (Na+) following acute NaHCO3 ingestion. METHODS: Male participants (n = 15) with backgrounds in rugby, football or sprinting com

The neuropathology of sport.

The benefits of regular exercise, physical fitness and sports participation on cardiovascular and brain health are undeniable. Physical activity reduces the risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and stroke, and produces beneficial effects on cholesterol levels, antioxidant systems, inflammation, and vascular function. Exercise also enhances psychological health, reduces age-related loss of brain volume, improves cognition, reduces the risk of developing dementia, and impedes neurodegeneration. Nonetheless, the play of sports is associated with risks, includin

Relationship between Peak Eccentric Force during the Nordic Hamstring Exercise and One Repetition Maximum Deadlift Performance.

BACKGROUND: The Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) is useful for preventing hamstring strain injuries. However, its adoption rates in the sports field are currently low, necessitating a safe and efficient introduction. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: The purpose was to examine the relationship between the eccentric force during the NHE and the one repetition maximum of deadlift. It was hypothesized that the eccentric force during the NHE would be correlated with the one repetition maximum (1RM) of the deadlift. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Healthy student rugby players with no history of

An unusual case of childhood osteoarticular tuberculosis from the Árpádian Age cemetery of Győrszentiván-Révhegyi tag (Győr-Moson-Sopron county, Hungary).

Ancient human remains exhibiting bony changes consistent with osteoarticular tuberculosis (OATB) indicate that the disease has afflicted mankind for millennia. Nonetheless, not many pediatric OATB cases have been published in the paleopathological literature-from Hungary, only three cases have been described up to now. In our paper, we demonstrate a child (S0603) from the Árpádian Age cemetery of Győrszentiván-Révhegyi tag (northwestern Hungary), who represents a unique case of OATB regarding both the pattern and severity of the observed bony changes.
