Cost evaluation of reproductive and primary health care mobile service delivery for women in two rural districts in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer screening is a critical health service that is often unavailable to women in under-resourced settings. In order to expand access to this and other reproductive and primary health care services, a South African non-governmental organization established a van-based mobile clinic in two rural districts in South Africa. To inform policy and budgeting, we conducted a cost evaluation of this service delivery model. METHODS: The evaluation was retrospective (October 2012-September 2013 for one district and April-September 2013 for the second district) and conducted from a

Association of hypertension and obesity with HIV and antiretroviral therapy in a rural tertiary health center in Nigeria: a cross-sectional cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There are few studies from Nigeria and Africa regarding the contribution of obesity and hypertension to cardiovascular risk in HIV-infected patients. This study investigates the prevalence of hypertension and obesity and their association with HIV infection and antiretroviral treatment (ART). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional cohort study in a rural tertiary health center in Nigeria. The data collected included demographic variables, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), monthly income, educational attainment, HIV status and ART treatment, duration of treatment, and CD4 T-l

Using Mobile Health (mHealth) and geospatial mapping technology in a mass campaign for reactive oral cholera vaccination in rural Haiti.

BACKGROUND: In mass vaccination campaigns, large volumes of data must be managed efficiently and accurately. In a reactive oral cholera vaccination (OCV) campaign in rural Haiti during an ongoing epidemic, we used a mobile health (mHealth) system to manage data on 50,000 participants in two isolated communities. METHODS: Data were collected using 7-inch tablets. Teams pre-registered and distributed vaccine cards with unique barcodes to vaccine-eligible residents during a census in February 2012. First stored on devices, data were uploaded nightly via Wi-fi to a web-hosted database. During the

Young rural people at risk for schizophrenia: time for mental health services to translate research evidence into best practice of care.

Early intervention into prodromal schizophrenia has shown promise, but controversy continues regarding the ethical acceptability of identifying a group of 'ultra high risk' individuals of whom only 30 to 50% will develop a psychotic disorder. With well developed early intervention services this group faces the possibility of being labelled as 'pre-psychotic', a condition for which the well known stigma associated with the diagnosis of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder is likely to be associated. In addition, the use of potent antipsychotic and other medications (albeit usually at lower doses t

Public health implications of a case of haemolytic-uraemic syndrome associated with a concomitant outbreak of mild gastroenteritis in a small rural community.

The concomitant occurrence of a case of haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS) and 62 cases of mild gastroenteritis in schools of a small rural community in southern Italy induced the health authorities to suspect a foodborne outbreak of shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection. The schools were closed and the catering service involved was investigated. However, STEC were not isolated from the HUS case or from the 56 cases of gastroenteritis examined, and the HUS case and the outbreak of gastroenteritis were probably just coincidental. A retrospective cohort study failed to show any

Skin diseases in children in rural Kenya: long-term results of a dermatology project within the primary health care system.

BACKGROUND: Following an epidemiological study on skin diseases in 5780 pupils from 13 schools in rural western Kenya in 1993, a dermatology project within the primary health care system was established in 1994 by the German non-government organization (NGO) 'Doctors in Aid of Children with Skin Diseases in Africa'. Within this project trained community health workers carried out regular visits to schools and nurseries and treated children with hydrocortisone acetate 1% cream for dermatitis, gentian violet 1% solution for bacterial skin infections, Whitfield's ointment for dermatophytoses and

Mental health of preschool children and their mothers in a mixed urban/rural population. II. Family and maternal factors and child behaviour.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which certain maternal, child and family characteristics are associated in families with a 3-year-old child were examined. METHOD: A total population of families with a 3-year-old child and living in the New Forest were identified. Measures of child behaviour and the maternal GHQ-30 were obtained. RESULTS: Whereas behaviour problems were found to be significantly associated with all maternal and family factors (except social class), difficult temperament was only related to mother's recall of their own childhood as unhappy and overactivity was only significantly ass

Barriers and Facilitators to Implementing Digital Health Technologies for Remote Management of NCDs in Rural Areas: Mixed Methods Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital health technologies (DHTs) have the potential to improve care delivery and outcomes for patients with noncommunicable diseases. Yet their implementation in rural settings remains uneven, and the factors influencing uptake are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: This mixed methods systematic review aimed to identify barriers and facilitators influencing the implementation and use of DHTs for remote management of noncommunicable diseases in rural areas. METHODS: We searched Medline, Embase, and CINAHL from inception to February 12, 2026, using terms related to digital health, n

Deployment of Low-Latency Satellite Technology for Telemedicine: A Backhaul Solution for Improving Rural Health Care Connectivity in Developing Countries.

BACKGROUND: In developing countries, satellite-based technology can aid critical telemedicine applications and other digital health services in critically underserved areas. Affordable, high-speed broadband services can and should be accessible to all citizens. Remote locations are necessary to support various critical services, including education and training, telehealth applications, remote patient monitoring, and warning systems, particularly during disasters. Currently, however, these services are limited to urban centers, leaving rural areas without access to specialized health care serv

Understanding zoonotic spillover interfaces for the design of a One Health education intervention: a qualitative baseline study from rural Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Prevention of zoonotic spillover requires an understanding of how human, animal, and environmental interactions shape risk in everyday life. Efforts have focused largely on surveillance and response rather than on primary prevention informed by lived experience. In Southeast Asia-a recognised hotspot for zoonotic emergence-there is limited qualitative evidence describing how spillover risk is shaped by routine practices, environmental change, and structural constraints, and how such evidence can inform the design of One Health education interventions. METHODS: We conducted a forma

Urban-Rural Variation in the Efficacy of a Mobile Health Anxiety Treatment for Young Adults: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

PURPOSE: This health brief reports how the efficacy of a mobile health generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) treatment for young adults differed across the urban-rural gradient. METHODS: Data from a randomized clinical trial (n = 102) of the GAD treatment CBT-txt-A was used to test for urban-rural moderation of the treatment effect. RESULTS: The effect of CBT-txt-A on reducing GAD symptoms was significantly stronger for residents of more rural, than urban, regions (β = -1.949, p = .023, 95% confidence interval = -3.627, -0.271), with the treatment effect size approximately three times larger in

Association of DNA methyltransferase polymorphisms with breast cancer: a nested case‒control study of the Arkansas Rural Community Health study.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women in the United States. While many risk factors have been identified, a substantial proportion of breast cancer cases occur in individuals without known risk profiles, underscoring the need to investigate novel genetic and epigenetic contributors. DNA methylation, an epigenetic modification regulated by DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) enzymes, plays a critical role in gene expression and genomic stability. METHODS: This nested case‒control study, conducted within the Arka

Mental Health and Substance Use in Rural and Northern British Columbia: A Systematic Review of Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Intervention Effectiveness.

The rural and northern communities of British Columbia (BC) have their own barriers to accessing mental health and substance use services that lead to greater susceptibility to psychological disorders and substance abuse. Although there is increasing awareness about these inequalities, the research on mental health and substance use outcomes in these groups is still piecemeal. The proposed systematic review provided a synthesis of the current literature on mental health and substance use outcomes in rural and northern BC, the population-specific risk and protective factors, and the effectivene

Exploring generational differences in the impact of stigma on mental health among people affected by leprosy in rural India: a qualitative study.

Leprosy continues to be highly stigmatised in India, resulting in the continuation of poor mental health outcomes for affected individuals and delays in seeking treatment. Whilst previous research suggests that the effectiveness of intervention strategies to reduce stigma and improve mental health can vary across generations, little is known about how leprosy-related stigma specifically impacts the mental health of different generational groups. This study, therefore, explored these generational differences in rural India. Through qualitative in-depth interviews conducted between June and July

Mental Health of First Responders in Rural Australia: A Qualitative Exploration of Intersecting Individual, Organisational and Contextual Factors on Psychological Wellbeing.

To explore the factors shaping mental health experiences among rural and remote first responders and to examine how organisational and contextual conditions influence psychological wellbeing. First responders are routinely exposed to traumatic events and are at elevated risk of mental health difficulties. In rural and remote settings, geographic isolation, limited workforce capacity, and reduced access to specialised services may compound these risks. However, less is known about how workplace culture and service structures interact with trauma exposure in these contexts. A participatory actio

A prospective cohort study of the SEARCH integrated HIV/hypertension community health worker-led intervention in rural Kenya and Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Clinic-based hypertension screening and treatment for people with and without HIV depends on consistent clinic engagement. Retention is challenging in rural areas, especially for people with severe hypertension, which typically requires more frequent visits than clinically stable HIV. We hypothesised that Ministry of Health (MoH) community health workers (CHWs) could improve severe hypertension detection and treatment through an integrated hypertension/HIV intervention. METHODS: In rural Uganda and Kenya, we added HIV testing and a status-neutral hypertension intervention to CHW
