Scrub typhus is a common bacterial infection in many parts of Asia. The causative agent, Orientia tsutsugamushi, is transmitted by trombiculid mite (chigger) larvae that require small mammals as maintaining hosts. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a serious, life-threatening complication of scrub typus.
