Factors associated with secondary thoracotomy for hemostasis following lung surgery: a retrospective analysis.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to systematically investigate the causes and management of secondary thoracotomy for hemostasis following lung cancer surgery. Although infrequent, secondary thoracotomy can lead to prolonged hospitalization, increased costs, and additional patient trauma. However, prior research has been limited to case reports or experience-based summaries, lacking a comprehensive analysis of this issue. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 39 patients who underwent secondary thoracotomy for hemostasis between January 2015 and December 2022 at the Cancer Hospital of C

Randomised controlled interventions on physical activity, diet or their dual approach to better public health and the links to body mass index in 10-19 years: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Health behaviour serves as a pivotal domain for the control of current health crises that primarily develop in young people and affect the global population in excess. This study hypothesises that appropriately planned physical activity (PA) intervention for pupils performed in the secondary school setting and during compulsory school time results in healthier body weight management. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, a protocol, and a PROSPERO trial registration (C

Comparison of secondary signs as shown by unenhanced helical computed tomography in patients with uric acid or calcium ureteral stones.

Unenhanced helical computed tomography (UHCT) has evolved into a well-accepted diagnostic method in patients with suspected ureterolithiasis. UHCT not only shows stones within the lumen of the ureter, it also permits evaluation of the secondary signs associated with ureteral obstruction from stones. However, there we could find no data on how secondary signs might differ in relation to different compositions of ureteral stones. In this study, we compared the degree of secondary signs revealed by UHCT in uric acid stone formers and in patients forming calcium stones. We enrolled 117 patients wi

Secondary Surgery after Cervical Disc Arthroplasty versus Fusion for Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease: A Meta-analysis with Trial Sequential Analysis.

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to explore whether cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) was superior to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) in reducing secondary surgery. PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched. Outcomes were reported as relative risk (RR) with the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). The pooled data was calculated using a random-effect model. We also used the trial sequential analysis (TSA) to further verify our results and obtain more moderate estimates. Twenty-one studies with 4208 patients were included in this me

Ventilation management and outcomes in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: a protocol for a preplanned secondary analysis of the TTM2 trial.

INTRODUCTION: Mechanical ventilation is a fundamental component in the management of patients post cardiac arrest. However, the ventilator settings and the gas-exchange targets used after cardiac arrest may not be optimal to minimise post-anoxic secondary brain injury. Therefore, questions remain regarding the best ventilator management in such patients. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a preplanned analysis of the international randomised controlled trial, targeted hypothermia versus targeted normothermia after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA)-target temperature management 2 (TTM2). Secondary myelodysplastic syndromes identified via next-generation sequencing in a non-small cell lung cancer patient.

BACKGROUND: Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a group of clonal disorders characterized by ineffective and dysplastic hematopoiesis in the bone marrow with a high risk of progression to leukemia. Many studies have demonstrated that chemo-radiotherapy for cancer patients and exposure to certain chemicals may increase the risk of secondary MDS, which is characterized by specific chromosomal abnormalities and genomic alterations. Since next-generation sequencing (NGS) has been widely used for the diagnosis of cancer patients, advanced analysis of the sequencing data may provide supplementary info

Secondary Use of Health Data in Canada and the European Union: Expectations, Frictions and the Politics of Scale.

In this article, we trace expectations associated with efforts to promote secondary use of health data in Canada and the European Union. In Canada, we focus on initiatives enabling cross-jurisdictional data access in a highly devolved federal system with parallel commitments to Indigenous data sovereignty. In the EU, we focus on the European Health Data Space, a new regulatory regime intended to facilitate access to health data for clinical care, research, policymaking and innovation across 27 member states. Drawing on a comparative analysis of policy documents and semi-structured interviews a

Spatial analysis of unimproved drinking water source in East Africa: Using Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from 2012-2023.

BACKGROUND: According to the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme, unimproved drinking water sources include unprotected wells and springs, surface water (e.g., rivers, lakes), vendor-provided water, bottled water (without improved alternatives), and tanker truck-provided water. In East Africa, 68.7% of water at very high risk comes from such sources. Using unimproved drinking water sources can lead to serious health risks, including waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, typhoid fever, and hepatitis. Therefore, this study aimed to map the spatial distribution of unimproved drinking

Long-term observation of the frequency of secondary colorectal cancer and other malignancies in tyrosine kinase inhibitor treated chronic myeloid leukemia patients and controls.

In this analysis, we examined the risk of secondary malignancies for tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients. We also collected data on specific risk factors for colorectal cancer. Ninety-one patients with CML and 76 controls were included and in total 4 (4.4%) secondary malignancies were found in patients and 8 (10.5%) in controls. The risk for secondary malignancies was not significantly elevated for CML patients (p = 0.141). Two (2.2%) CML patients developed colorectal cancer compared to 4 (5.3%) in the reference group. A higher risk for CML patien

A contract research organization perspective on secondary pharmacology: current practices, panel selection, and emerging needs for interpretation.

Secondary pharmacology has become an established component of modern drug discovery and nonclinical safety assessment, supporting the early identification of off-target activities that may contribute to unintended pharmacological clinical effects. Although current regulatory guidance does not prescribe specific panel compositions, secondary pharmacology data are commonly expected to support first-in-human submissions and non-clinical safety assessments. However, practices remain heterogeneous with respect to panel design, assay format, testing strategy, and data interpretation. This perspectiv

Secondary vs. Primary Spinal Infection in Early Clinical Assessment: A Parsimonious, Leakage-Resistant Modelling Approach with Internal Validation: A Multicenter Retrospective Study.

Background and Objectives: Spinal infections represent a heterogeneous group of diseases where primary or secondary etiological classification is fundamental for diagnosis and clinical decision-making. The aim is to present multicenter data evaluating etiological patterns associated with comorbidity. This study investigated the etiological distribution of spinal infections in a multicenter cohort and examined the relationships between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) and primary and secondary spinal infection etiologies, which emerged in the study and are thought to cont

Longitudinal network-based brain grey matter MRI measures are clinically relevant and sensitive to treatment effects in multiple sclerosis.

In multiple sclerosis clinical trials, MRI outcome measures are typically extracted at a whole-brain level, but pathology is not homogeneous across the brain and so whole-brain measures may overlook regional treatment effects. Data-driven methods, such as independent component analysis, have shown promise in identifying regional disease effects but can only be computed at a group level and cannot be applied prospectively. The aim of this work was to develop a technique to extract longitudinal independent component analysis network-based measures of co-varying grey matter volumes, derived from

Secondary mitral regurgitation (part 1): volumetric quantification and analysis.

Secondary mitral regurgitation (MR) develops as a consequence of left ventricular (LV) dilatation and dysfunction, which complicates its evaluation and management. The goal of this article is to review the assessment of secondary MR with special emphasis on quantification and analysis of LV volume data. At the present time, the optimal method for making these measurements appears to be cardiac MRI. In severe MR (both primary and secondary), the regurgitant fraction (RF) exceeds 50%, and as a result, the LV end diastolic volume (EDV) is increased. In secondary MR, the ejection fraction is depre

In vivo secondary structural analysis of Influenza A virus genomic RNA.

Influenza A virus (IAV) is a respiratory virus that causes epidemics and pandemics. Knowledge of IAV RNA secondary structure in vivo is crucial for a better understanding of virus biology. Moreover, it is a fundament for the development of new RNA-targeting antivirals. Chemical RNA mapping using selective 2'-hydroxyl acylation analyzed by primer extension (SHAPE) coupled with Mutational Profiling (MaP) allows for the thorough examination of secondary structures in low-abundance RNAs in their biological context. So far, the method has been used for analyzing the RNA secondary structures of seve

[Secondary erythrocytoses].

The author provides data pertinent to the modern classification of erythrocytosis, which rests on the pathogenetic principle. The difference in the pathogenesis of erythremia and secondary erythrocytoses was proved with the help of an erythroid culture and by examination of erythropoietins, which can be thus used for diagnostic purposes. Analysis of so-called "pure" erythrocytosis has shown that this term implies different patterns of erythrocytosis from the standpoint of the pathogenesis: erythremia, secondary erythrocytoses that are difficult to diagnose, and hereditary erythrocytosis associ
