Cushioned grind-out technique transcrestal sinus floor elevation for simultaneous implantation in severe atrophic maxilla: A retrospective study with up to 7 years of follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the cushioned grind-out technique transcrestal sinus floor elevation for simultaneous implant placement with ≤4 mm of residual bone height (RBH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective propensity score matching (PSM) study. Five PSM analyses included the confounding variables of Schneiderian membrane perforation, early and late implant failure, and peri-implant apical and marginal bone resorption. After PSM, we compared the difference in five aspects between the RBH ≤ 4 and >4 mm groups. RESULTS: A total of 214 patients with 30

Prediction of Residual Alveolar Bone Height in the Posterior Maxilla After Dental Extractions.

PURPOSE: After tooth extraction in the posterior maxilla, bone resorption often limits implant placement unless additional grafting procedures are performed. However, it is difficult to predict the amount of bone that will remain after extraction based on current evidence. The purpose of this study was to develop a method for predicting the postextraction alveolar bone height in the posterior maxilla. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study that included all patients who were treated for the extraction and replacement of a maxillary first molar with a dental i

Ultra-short versus standard-length dental implants in conjunction with osteotome-mediated sinus floor elevation: A randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The ability to restore missing teeth with dental implants is dictated by the available bone and by the presence of anatomical structures. The potential to insert ultrashort implants avoids additional surgical procedures and its inherent complications. The last European Association of Dental Implantologists consensus in 2016 defined ultrashort implants and standard-length dental implants as <6 and >8 mm, respectively. PURPOSE: The present study aimed to investigate whether single standing ultrashort dental implants (US) could provide a viable therapeutic alternative to osteotome me

Comparative Evaluation of Bone Formation between PRF and Blood Clot Alone as the Sole Sinus-Filling Material in Maxillary Sinus Augmentation with the Implant as a Tent Pole: A Randomized Split-Mouth Study.

The lack of bone volume in the posterior maxillary region can be augmented with sinus elevation. Since the elevated sinus is a closed cavity, a blood clot that fills the sinus space itself can aid in bone formation. The aim of this study was to compare bone formation in the elevated maxillary sinus between platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and blood clot alone as the sole sinus-filling material with the implant as a tent pole. The study was a randomized controlled trial with a split-mouth design involving seven patients. An implant was placed on one side only and blood was allowed to fill the elevate

[Reconstruction of the atrophic edentulous maxilla for implant placement].

INTRODUCTION: Extreme maxillary atrophy results from partial or total maxillary bone defect, affecting the alveolar and basal segments. The residual bone is only a few millimeters high and does not allow retention of dental prostheses (complete edentulation), or placing implants. Bone reconstruction with cranial bone grafts usually allows obtaining enough bone volume in a single step to place implants for prosthetic rehabilitation, 3 months later. TECHNICAL NOTE: Reconstruction begins by inserting bone grafts on the sinus floor. The pre-maxilla is then rebuilt with bone grafts placed on the n

Sinus lift procedures: an overview of current techniques.

For more than 30 years the maxillary sinus augmentation graft has been a mainstay of implant-directed maxillary reconstruction. The purpose of this article is to review the fundamentals of maxillary sinus reconstruction including anatomy and physiology of the sinus, indications for surgery, preoperative evaluation, surgical techniques, and management of complications. While there are some relative contraindications for the procedure, there are almost no absolute contraindications. With preparation, education, and experience, the maxillary sinus augmentation/elevation graft is a procedure that

Bone Regeneration After Maxillary Sinus Augmentation with Allogeneic and Xenogeneic Biomaterials with Adjunctive Photobiomodulation: Histological and Radiological Secondary Outcomes of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Atrophy of the alveolar ridge in the posterior maxilla often requires sinus floor elevation prior to implant placement. Photobiomodulation using low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been suggested as a supportive approach for bone healing, although data based on histological evaluation are still limited. METHODS: This study presents histological and radiological secondary outcomes of a randomized clinical trial on bone regeneration after lateral window sinus augmentation. Twenty patients were allocated according to grafting material (allogeneic or xenogeneic) and the use of adjuncti
