Sleep and restless legs syndrome in female adolescents with idiopathic musculoskeletal pain.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the presence of restless legs syndrome, periodic leg movement, and sleep disorders in female adolescents with idiopathic musculoskeletal pain through a sleep scale and polysomnography, and to compare these data in adolescents without pain history. METHOD: Twenty-six adolescents diagnosed with idiopathic musculoskeletal pain followed in a pain outpatient clinic and 25 healthy controls matched by age and education were recruited. Sleep in Functional Motor Disorders: A Case-Control Polysomnographic Study.

Sleep problems are frequent in functional motor disorders (FMDs). Surprisingly, objective correlates of impaired sleep and its relationship to other comorbidities have been understudied, and no polysomnographic study is available. We aimed to map the polysomnographic parameters in the context of self-reported sleep and mood symptoms and search for comorbid sleep disorders in FMD and healthy controls. Thirty-seven patients (mean age [SD], 48.2 [10.6] years) with clinically definite FMD and 37 controls (48.6 [11.2] years) underwent structured medical and sleep history assessment, neurological ex

Temporomandibular Disorders in Psychiatric Outpatients: A Hidden Epidemic?

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a multimodal group of orofacial pain syndromes that rank behind only chronic low back pain in the list of most prevalent musculoskeletal conditions causing pain and disability. Previous studies have recorded high rates of comorbid anxiety, depression, and poor sleep quality among TMD patients. METHODS: Eighty five outpatients recruited from Rhode Island Hospital's Latino and Portuguese Mental Health Programs completed the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire

Tuberculosis and sleep - An underexplored association?

Tuberculosis is a leading cause of infectious disease mortality worldwide. On the other hand, sleep is a vital determinant of human health and profoundly influences immunity and cardiometabolic health. Both tuberculosis and sleep disorders are highly prevalent conditions, especially in developing countries, which face a dual epidemic of communicable and non-communicable diseases. Sleep quality/disorders and tuberculosis may potentially have bidirectional relationships of public health significance. This article summarizes the current literature that explores the associations between sleep and

Global practice of sleep medicine: Iran.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: In this study we aimed to conduct a comprehensive review of sleep medicine in Iran, focusing on the country's advancements, challenges, and the global context. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive review of sleep medicine in Iran, using various sources to ensure a thorough analysis. The national educational curriculum for sleep medicine and guidelines on sleep clinics issued by Iran's Ministry of Health served as a foundational resource. Additionally, we gathered information from the Iranian Sleep Medicine Society website and relevant committee data sources. To enhance our

Do Sleep Disorders and Western Diet Influence Psoriasis? A Scoping Review.

Western diet may trigger sleep disorders and vice versa, but their single and mutual effects on systemic inflammatory diseases (i.e., psoriasis) are far from being fully elucidated. At the same time, psoriatic patients display a great burden of sleep disorders and dysmetabolisms related to an unhealthy lifestyle (i.e., diet). These patients are also affected by a chronic disorder deeply modulated by environmental factors (i.e., sleep and diet) capable to influence drug-response and disease progression. Thus, we aimed to summarize the evidence in the literature that may highlight a potential li
