Wearable healthcare systems, new frontiers of e-textile.

There is a growing need of renovation in our health care managing systems; people need to be more interactive and more conscious of their own health condition in a way to adjust incorrect lifestyles, to obtain a personalized therapy tuned to their own physiological reactions and on their own environmental condition. To gain knowledge of a citizen's health status and to monitor without harassing them (until they refuse any medical supervision), a comfortable remote monitoring of important physiological parameters is necessary. The approach is therefore to integrate system solutions into functio

Determinants of IL-6 levels during HIV infection.

INTRODUCTION: Elevated IL-6 levels have been linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer and death. Compared to the general population, treated HIV+ persons have 50-100% higher IL-6 levels, but few data on the determinants of IL-6 levels during HIV infection currently exist. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Participants in three international HIV trials (SMART, ESPRIT and SILCAAT) with IL-6 plasma levels measured at baseline were included (N=9864). Factors independently associated with log2-transformed IL-6 level were identified by multivariate linear regression; exponentiated estim

Ultrasound-Assisted Processing of Amorphous Hydrated Carbon Oxide from Plant Origin: Properties and Biocompatibility of Conductive Nanocomposites as a Proposal for Food Packaging.

The sustainable production of conductive carbon nanomaterials for food-packaging applications remains limited by dispersion instability and safety concerns. Herein, we investigate the ultrasound-assisted processing of plant-derived hydrated amorphous carbon oxide (HACO) to obtain stable, conductive, and biocompatible nanostructured dispersions. Ultrasonic cavitation was applied in a hydroalcoholic medium, and a full 23 factorial design was used to evaluate the effects of sonication amplitude and time on particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), and zeta potential, together with acoustic param

Modulation of MOF Energy State to Construct Smart Activated Sensitizers for Membrane Directed C-H Ketene Therapy in Tumor Cells.

Phospholipid oxidation closely links tumorigenesis to tumor microenvironment (TME) remodeling, easily producing lipid peroxides that cause inflammation and membrane damage. The inherent complexity and unpredictable biological effects of phospholipid peroxidation necessitate precision catalytic platforms for selective amplification of specific oxidized lipid species to enable mechanistic studies. We engineered a supramolecular smart composite material, SD-1@PCN-Ru, by integrating a ruthenium-modified metal-organic framework (MOF) with the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTKs)-targeting fluorescent pr

Bi-directional pH-responsive cellulose nanocrystals-based pesticide microcapsules for sustainable agriculture.

Smart-release pesticide microcapsules have more advantages than traditional pesticide formulations in sustainable agricultural practices. Here, we employed cellulose nanocrystal-based Pickering emulsion (ACNCs-Pickering) as the core material, followed by coating chelating networks consisting of tannic acid (TA) and iron ions (FeIII). This strategy successfully developed a bi-directional pH-responsive imidacloprid (IMI)-containing microcapsule formulation (IMI@ACNCs@TA-FeIII) for environmentally friendly and efficient pest control. IMI@ACNCs@TA-FeIII achieved an encapsulation efficiency of 91.1

Challenges and solutions for addressing critical shortage of supply chain for personal and protective equipment (PPE) arising from Coronavirus disease (COVID19) pandemic - Case study from the Republic of Ireland.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is highly infectious agent that causes fatal respiratory illnesses, which is of great global public health concern. Currently, there is no effective vaccine for tackling this COVID19 pandemic where disease countermeasures rely upon preventing or slowing person-to-person transmission. Specifically, there is increasing efforts to prevent or reduce transmission to front-line healthcare workers (HCW). However, there is growing international concern regarding the shortage in supply chain of critical one-time-use personal and protective equipment (PPE). PPE are heat sensitive

In vitro controlled release of cisplatin from gold-carbon nanobottles via cleavable linkages.

Carbon nanotubes' (CNTs) hollow interior space has been explored for biomedical applications, such as drug repository against undesirable inactivation. To further devise CNTs as smart material for controlled release of cargo molecules, we propose the concept of "gold-carbon nanobottles". After encapsulating cis-diammineplatinum(II) dichloride (cisplatin, CDDP) in CNTs, we covalently attached gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) at the open-tips of CNTs via different cleavable linkages, namely hydrazine, ester, and disulfide-containing linkages. Compared with our previous study in which more than 80% of

It is hard work behaving as a credible patient: encounters between women with chronic pain and their doctors.

In various studies during the last decade, women with medically unexplained disorders have reported negative experiences during medical encounters. Accounts of being met with scepticism and lack of comprehension, feeling rejected, ignored, and being belittled, blamed for their condition and assigned psychological explanation models are common. Women patients exerted themselves to attract the doctor's medical attention and interest, and were anxious to be considered as whiners or complainers. Here, we explore the nature of "work" done by the patients in order to be believed, understood, and tak

Biomimetic engineering of a fortified ice composite with enhanced mechanical properties.

This work presents BioPykrete, a high-performance sustainable bio-composite engineered from ice, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and a custom chimeric protein designed to facilitate interfacial adhesion. By genetically fusing the ice-binding protein AFPIII with the carbohydrate-binding module CBM3a, we developed a chimeric protein to act as a molecular "bioadhesive" bridging the crystalline reinforcement phase to the ice matrix. During the controlled solidification of the suspension, the CBM3a-AFPIII chimera is proposed to regulate the self-organisation of the CNC fibers into a reinforcing 3D ne
