Atypical fibrous histiocytoma of the scrotum.

Atypical fibrous histiocytoma is a rare neoplasm. A scrotal location for this tumor is even more unusual. We report a case of a 90-year-old man with scrotal atypical fibrous histiocytoma. Our case had histologic features consistent with those cases previously reported in the literature. The tumor consists of cells with large hyperchromatic irregular nuclei, bizarre multinucleated cells (monster cells), and xanthomatous cells with large prominent nuclei set in a background of classic fibrous histiocytoma. Rare mitotic figures are identified. Immunohistochemical studies showed the tumor cells to

Parasitic fibroid of greater omentum in 31-years old woman.

Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign tumors of the uterine smooth muscle. The latest FIGO classification, considering both their location and the degree of ingrowth into the uterine muscle, distinguishes eight classes of fibroids [1]. The location of leiomyomas in connection with their size may determine the characteristic symptoms: abdominal pain, pressure symptoms, difficulties in getting pregnant, recurrent miscarriages. Among the case reports there are also descriptions of the so-called parasitic leiomyomas [2]. The paper presents a case report of a parasitic leiomyoma in a young

Heart-shaped Mediastinal Angiomyolipoma With Chylopericardium.

Angiomyolipomas are benign mesenchymal tumors classified as PEComas, consisting of blood vessels, smooth muscle, and fat, and generally found in renal tissue. Extrarenal cases are uncommon, and those of the mediastinum are rare, with only 23 reports in the literature. We present a successful surgically managed case of a symptomatic 44-year-old woman with a large heart-shaped mediastinal angiomyolipoma in the right hemithorax associated with chylopericardium.

Primary Ovarian Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Tumor Diagnosed During Pregnancy: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms with dual melanocytic and smooth muscle differentiation. Ovarian PEComas are extremely rare, and to our knowledge, this is the first reported case diagnosed during pregnancy. A 31-year-old pregnant woman underwent resection of a left adnexal mass at an external facility. Histopathology assessed at the pathology department of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) revealed a PEComa. Follow-up imaging at our center showed a residual complex solid-cystic mass in the left adnexa. Multidiscip

Angiomyolipoma of the adrenal gland: clinical experience and literature review.

Angiomyolipomas, a type of benign mesenchymal tumor originating from perivascular epithelioid cells, are composed of mature adipose tissue, smooth muscle, and thick-walled vessels. With fewer than 20 cases reported in English literature, adrenal angiomyolipoma is extremely rare. In these cases, the patient is usually asymptomatic and the tumor is found incidentally. Adrenal angiomyolipoma has never been reported in association with lung cancer. A 62-year-old man presented with an enlarged mass in the left adrenal gland. The mass had persisted for two years previously and was first discovered d

From the radiologic pathology archives: mass lesions of the dura: beyond meningioma-radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Meningioma is the most common mass involving the dura, making it number one in the differential diagnosis for any dural-based mass; however, a variety of other neoplastic and nonneoplastic lesions also involve the dura. Knowledge of the dural anatomy can provide clues to the various processes that may involve this location. The neoplastic processes include both benign and malignant lesions such as hemangiopericytoma, lymphoma, solitary fibrous tumor, melanocytic lesions, Epstein-Barr virus-associated smooth muscle tumors, Rosai-Dorfman disease, and metastatic lesions. The nonneoplastic process…

Novel mechanism of regulation of fibrosis in kidney tumor with tuberous sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Deficiency in tuberin results in activation the mTOR pathway and leads to accumulation of cell matrix proteins. The mechanisms by which tuberin regulates fibrosis in kidney angiomyolipomas (AMLs) of tuberous sclerosis patients are not fully known. METHOD: In the present study, we investigated the potential role of tuberin/mTOR pathway in the regulation of cell fibrosis in AML cells and kidney tumor tissue from tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) patients. RESULTS: AML cells treated with rapamycin shows a significant decrease in mRNA and protein expression as well as in promoter tran

Laparoscopically resected uterine adenomatoid tumor with coexisting endometriosis: case report.

Adenomatoid tumors are rare benign mesothelial tumors of the genital tract, and only a few cases of uterine adenomatoid tumors treated at laparoscopic surgery have been reported. Herein is reported the case of a laparoscopically resected uterine adenomatoid tumor with coexisting endometriosis. A 34-year-old nulliparous woman with suspected uterine fibroma and endometrial cysts underwent laparoscopic surgery in which both the uterine tumor and the endometrial cysts were enucleated. Enucleation of the uterine tumor was difficult, and, therefore, the border between the tumor and normal myometrium

[Mixed epithelial and stromal tumor growing with polypoid pattern in the renal pelvis].

A 68-year-old woman was found incidentally to have right hydronephrosis and a renal pelvic mass by abdominal ultrasonography. Radiographic examinations revealed a heterogeneous renal pelvic tumor, and right nephroureterectomy was performed. The tumor was well circumscribed yellow-whitish solid mass with scattered cysts. Histologically, the tumor was composed of both mesenchymal and epithelial components. The mesenchymal elements consisted of fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells, and the epithelial elements of cystic and tubular structures lined by cuboidal epithelium. Atypia and mitoses were no

Leiomyoma arising from the tunica albuginea of the testis: sonographic findings.

Leiomyomas are benign neoplasms that may arise from any structure or organ containing smooth muscle. The majority of genitourinary leimyomas are found in the renal capsule, but this tumor has also been reported in the epididymis, spermatic cord, and tunica albuginea. Sonography is the imaging modality of choice for evaluating intrascrotal pathology, but the sonographic appearance of leiomyomas arising from the tunica albuginea have rarely been reported. We report a case of such a leiomyoma that was diagnosed sonographically.

An unusual extrauterine variant of adenosarcoma with multiple recurrences over 16 years.

An unusual extrauterine (pelvic) variant of adenosarcoma is presented. A benign-appearing epithelium resembling fallopian tube epithelium is integrally mixed with malignant stroma that in all areas sampled is low-grade leiomyosarcoma. The tumor has behaved as a low-grade malignancy with four local recurrences over a 16-year period. Extrauterine adenosarcomas have rarely been reported in the literature; and one in which the stromal component is histologically all of smooth muscle differentiation is more unusual.

An invasive adenocarcinoma of the accessory parotid gland: a rare example developing from a low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma?

UNLABELLED: Low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma (LGCCA) is a rare tumor of the salivary gland that exhibits clinically indolent behavior. In this paper, we present a case of invasive adenocarcinoma of the accessory parotid gland in a young male that exhibited histology suggestive of an association of LGCCA. A 27-year-old man presented with a subcutaneous tumor in his left cheek. The tumor was separated from the parotid gland and located on the masseter muscle. The tumor was resected, and the postoperative histological diagnosis was adenocarcinoma, not otherwise specified (ANOS). The tumor

Hamartoma of the breast.

Mammary hamartomas are unusual lesions with distinctive radiologic and pathologic features. They are well circumscribed, mobile tumors showing no adherence to skin or muscle. Mammographic studies show a peripheral, luscent halo, and the mass is radiographically similar in pattern to a normal breast ("breast within a breast"). Calcification is not present. Histologically, these encapsulated lesions are composed of various breast tissue components such as ducts, lobules, stroma prominently adipose, and smooth muscle, without any particular arrangement. Local surgical resection is the treatment o

Leiomyosarcoma: Current Clinical Management and Future Horizons.

Leiomyosarcomas are soft tissue tumors that are derived from smooth muscle mainly in the pelvis and retroperitoneum. Percutaneous biopsy is paramount to confirm diagnosis. Imaging is necessary to complete clinical staging. Multimodal treatment should be directed by expert sarcoma multidisciplinary teams that see a critical volume of these rare tumors. Surgery is the mainstay of curative intent treatment; however due to its high metastatic progression, there may be a benefit for neoadjuvant systemic treatment. Adjuvant systemic treatment has no proven disease-free survival, and its main role is

A rare case report for dermatomyofibroma in nasion.

Dermatomyofibroma is a benign and rare proliferation of myofibroblasts and fibroblasts of the skin. Dermatomyofibroma commonly locates at the shoulder and neck of young adults and adolescents. Other frequently affected anatomic sites are upper arms, thigh, chest wall, back, axillary region and abdomen. Herein, we reported a case of dermatomyofibroma occurred in the nasion. The asymptomatic firm nodule and histopathological features were consistent with dermatomyofibroma. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells expressed vimentin, HHF35 and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). The patient was followed

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor of the uterus: a case report.

A case of a perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) arising in the uterus of a 35-year-old woman is presented. Imaging studies revealed a 5 cm well circumscribed mass in the uterine fundus. The tumor was composed of clear to faintly eosinophilic, epithelioid and spindled cells. Immunohistochemically, most tumour cells were strongly positive for HMB-45, smooth muscle actin and desmine, but negative for epithelial markers, S-100 Protein and neuroendocrine markers. Reevaluation of the patient for signs of tuberous sclerosis complex after the diagnosis gave negative results. At the most recen

[Lymphangioleiomyomatosis--a rare disease of the lymphatic system].

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis is a rare disease with proliferation of smooth muscle cells within the lymphatics, mediastinal and retroperitoneal lymph nodes and in the lungs. The clinical symptoms are increasing dyspnea, chylous effusion, intestinal obstruction and thoracic or abdominal pain. The authors report the case of a 42-year-old woman who primarily suffered from thoracic pain, dyspnea and chylous effusion. In further examinations we discovered a leftsided retroperitoneal tumor and a tumor in the mesentery. The diagnostic difficulties experienced are described and the necessity of explorativ

Solitary fibrous tumor of the kidney. Case report.

Solitary fibrous tumors are rare spindle cell neoplasms usually arising in the pleura. They have, however, also been reported at extrapleural locations. Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the kidney is rare. Despite its rarity, histological diagnosis of solitary fibrous tumor is crucial to avoid misdiagnosis with other more aggressive tumors arising in the kidney. We report a solitary fibrous tumor of the left kidney that presented as a malignant tumor in a 51-year-old woman, and include clinical and radiographic findings. The tumor was well circumscribed and composed of spindle cells in a collag

Endoscopic resection of a large colonic leiomyoma.

A 48-year old man suffered from intermittent hematochezia and abdominal cramping over a period of four weeks. A colonoscopy revealed a 4.5 cm semi-pedunculated tumor in the transverse colon. Using a 2-channel colonoscope, the tumor was successfully removed with an electro-surgical snare after normal saline submucosal injection. Microscopic examination revealed it to be a smooth muscle tumor without mitosis. The patient recovered well, and did not have a residual tumor in a follow-up colonoscopy. We found no reports of a colonic leiomyoma larger than 3 cm which was completely removed by a colon…

POTENTIAL LIFE PROGNOSTIC MARKER FOR MESENCHYMAL TUMOR RESEMBLING UTERINE LEIOMYOSARCOMA.

Benign uterine leiomyoma (U.LMA) and malignant uterine leiomyosarcoma (U.LMS), both uterine mesenchymal tumors, are distinguished by the number of cells exhibiting mitotic activity. However, uterine mesenchymal tumors contain tumor cells with various cell morphologies; therefore, making a diagnosis, including differentiating between benign and malignant tumors, is difficult. For example, cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma (CDL) or uterine smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMPs) are a group of uterine mesenchymal tumors for which a differential diagnosis is challenging. To…
