BACKGROUND: Colloid adenocarcinoma of the lung is a rare subtype of variants of invasive adenocarcinomas. We report the appearance of this unusual entity on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old man of Chinese Han nationality coughed with a little white sputum for 1 month. Chest computed tomography showed multiple bilateral subpleural nodules and plaques accompanied by air bronchograms, which were most concentrated in the lower lobe of his right lung. Positron emission tomography indicated increased radioactivity uptake with

PURPOSE: Chronic osteomyelitis with soft-tissue involvement carries high risks of recurrence and reoperation. Accurate preoperative delineation of bone and soft-tissue infection is critical but challenging with conventional imaging. [¹⁸F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ([¹⁸F]FDG PET/CT) is sensitive for osseous lesions but limited for soft tissue, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides soft-tissue detail but lacks specificity. This study evaluated whether hybrid positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) could overcome these l

OBJECTIVE: To characterize peripheral vascular plaques color-coded as monosodium urate (MSU) deposition by dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) and assess their association with the overall soft-tissue MSU crystal burden.
METHODS: Patients with suspected crystal arthropathies were prospectively included in the CRYSTALILLE inception cohort to undergo baseline knees and ankles/feet DECT scans; treatment-naive gout patients initiating treat-to-target urate-lowering therapy (ULT) underwent repeated DECT scans with concomitant serum urate level measurements at 6 and 12 months. We determined the

This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the three-dimensional morphological changes in perioral soft tissue in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion after combined orthognathic-orthodontic treatment. In total, 68 eligible patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent bimaxillary surgery and orthodontics between January 2019 and January 2023 were included. Cone-beam computed tomography data were collected for each patient at three stages: pre-treatment (T0), 1 week before surgery (T1), and on completion of treatment (T2). Perioral soft-tissue changes, including upper/

INTRODUCTION: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic disorder where patients present with hypophosphatemia, chronic diffuse bone pain, and occasionally fractures. Benign phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMT) are responsible for the TIO and are largely soft tissue tumors.
CASES: Two male patients with TIO secondary to PMT were reported-one in the bony scapula and the other in the plantar foot soft tissue. The first case describes a 63-year-old Caucasian male, who sustained an intertrochanteric proximal femur stress fracture and approximately two years of diffuse bone pain an

Detailed histological analyses are desirable for zebrafish mutants that are models for human skeletal diseases, but traditional histological techniques are limited to two-dimensional thin sections with orientations highly dependent on careful sample preparation. On the other hand, techniques that provide three-dimensional (3D) datasets including µCT scanning are typically limited to visualizing the bony skeleton and lack histological resolution. We combined diffusible iodine-based contrast enhancement (DICE) and propagation phase-contrast synchrotron radiation micro-computed tomography (PPC-SR

Kimura's disease (KD) is a rare chronic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology that mainly involves damage to lymph nodes, soft tissues, and salivary glands. The clinical symptoms are mainly painless subcutaneous soft tissue masses, often involving head and neck lymph nodes and salivary glands, and are mainly characterized by diffuse eosinophilic infiltration, lymphocyte, and vascular proliferation. There are few reports in the literature that KD affects only inguinal lymph nodes. We report in this study a 41-year-old male patient who presented to the hospital for medical help with soft tis

BACKGROUND: Although multiple studies have been reported on the palatopharyngeus and levator veli palatini, their subtle anatomy and functions remain unclear. The authors elucidated the relationship between these muscles and their functional implications based on three-dimensional digital techniques.
METHODS: Cadaveric specimens were stained with iodine-potassium iodide and scanned using micro-computed tomography. The muscle fibers were drawn on the exported Imaging and Communications in Medicine images to reconstruct a three-dimensional model and further simplified.
RESULTS: In the soft pal

Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) is a noninvasive test for detection and analysis of coronary plaques morphology and classification. The low- to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (L/H) ratio is associated with plaques vulnerability. The study aims to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of CCTA and L/H ratio for plaques classification. We enrolled 212 patients with coronary artery single-vessel disease who performed preoperative CCTA and Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)-guided invasive coronary angiography. Patients were assigned to the acute coronary syndrome (ACS) group (n =

Results of treatment in patients with high-energy displaced pilon fractures are presented. During five years, 15 patients with displaced pilon fractures (AO type C2 and C3) were treated. All other types of fracture were excluded from the study. Fractures were identified using standard radiographs and computed topography scanning. The method and timing of the operation were dictated by the status of soft tissues. In all fractures, external fixation was placed immediately and was left until the initial callus bridged the fracture fragments. In case of moderate contusion of soft tissues, limited

Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging have complementary roles in the evaluation of chest wall disorders, which include mesenchymal tumors, primary and secondary malignancies, and inflammatory and infectious diseases. Important anatomic regions of the chest wall to evaluate on axial images include the supraclavicular fossa, axilla, and parasternal-internal mammary zone. For diagnosis of a suspected lipoma, CT is faster and less expensive; however, MR imaging may better delineate the extent of more invasive tumors if surgery is planned. MR imaging best depicts intramuscul

Trans-scaphoid perilunate fractures-dislocations are rare injuries caused by high-energy trauma of the wrist. Diagnosis is based on medical history, physical examination, and tools such as radiographs, computed tomography scan, and magnetic resonance imaging. Early treatment consists of closed reduction and casting to stabilize the limb. Definitive treatment is surgical and includes bone and soft tissue repair. A case of trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture-dislocation is presented, along with diagnosis, management and outcome.

A 3-year-old intact male Boer goat was evaluated for paraplegia. Computed tomography (CT) indicated the presence of diskospondylitis, which had previously not been reported in this species, and significant compressive myelopathy. Chronic bacterial pneumonia, epididymitis, nephritis, and soft-tissue abscesses were believed to result in hematogenous spread of bacteria to the affected disk spaces. Staphylococcus spp. and Archanobacterium pyogenes were both identified from postmortem cultures of the vertebral column.

Sports-related injuries of the hand and wrist include lesions of the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles. In many cases, radiologic imaging procedures are indispensible for the depiction, localization and accurate diagnosis of these lesions. This article reviews the role and potential of current imaging modalities such as conventional radiography, fluoroscopic examinations, arthrography, computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging for the diagnostic work-up of typical osseous and soft tissue injuries in sports medicine.

Calcific tendinitis of the proximal thigh is a benign entity that may cause significant pain. It must be distinguished from chronic or malignant disorders, such as arthritis, infection, and soft tissue/cortical neoplasms. Although it may be self-limited, some patients will benefit from medical intervention. In such cases, we recommend computed tomography-guided percutaneous steroid injection. Herein we describe the clinical and radiographic features of calcific tendinitis of the proximal thigh in 5 patients.
