Hearing and Balance in Healthy Aging Project: Characterization of Hearing, Balance, and Other Associated Disorders in Three Population Groups Aged 55 and Over.

INTRODUCTION: Active aging emphasizes optimizing health and participation for a better quality of life as people age. This paper explores the significant impact of hearing loss and balance disorders on the elderly. Age-related hearing loss is thought to contribute to communication breakdown and cognitive dysfunctions. The "hearing and balance in healthy aging" project focuses on early detection, mitigation, and advocacy. Objectives include exploring epidemiological traits, evaluating overall well-being impact, proving positive intervention effects, and advocating societal care for the elderly

Modulation frequency discrimination with single and multiple channels in cochlear implant users.

Temporal envelope cues convey important speech information for cochlear implant (CI) users. Many studies have explored CI users' single-channel temporal envelope processing. However, in clinical CI speech processors, temporal envelope information is processed by multiple channels. Previous studies have shown that amplitude modulation frequency discrimination (AMFD) thresholds are better when temporal envelopes are delivered to multiple rather than single channels. In clinical fitting, current levels on single channels must often be reduced to accommodate multi-channel loudness summation. As su

Assessing Auditory and Cochlear Function in Alopecia Areata Patients: Exploring the Link to Cochlear Melanocyte Damage.

Introduction Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disorder causing hair loss, including eyebrows, eyelashes, and body hair, primarily due to melanocyte impact. Though the precise AA melanocyte hearing loss mechanisms are not fully clear, it's speculated that cochlear melanocyte inflammation could disrupt endolymph production, which is necessary for sound signal transmission. Cochlear melanocytes maintain crucial potassium ion levels, which are pivotal for hearing. The potential AA-melanocyte-hearing loss link underscores the need to monitor auditory and cochlear function and consider interven

Primary malleus fixation: diagnosis and treatment.

Primary malleus fixation occurs in an otherwise normal middle ear without evidence of congenital deformity and without chronic inflammatory changes. It occurs in the latter decades of life and is frequently associated with sensorineural presbycusis. We believe it is a ligament ankylosis with osteoarthritis related to the aging process. The diagnosis of malleus fixation is facilitated through the use of a modified Siegle pneumatic otoscope in conjunction with the Zeiss binocular microscope. The literature pertaining to this subject as well as the more historical reports are reviewed. Goodhill h

Perception Versus Comprehension of Bound Morphemes in Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: The Pivotal Role of Form-Meaning Mapping.

PURPOSE: Bound morphemes are challenging for children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) to acquire and to use successfully. The challenge arises in part from limited access to spoken word forms as a result of reduced audibility during perception, but successful comprehension requires access to both the morphological forms and the mapping between these forms and their meanings. This study investigated the relationship between perception and comprehension of bound morphemes in order to assess the impact of form-meaning mapping on performance. METHOD: Seventy-eight elementary school-age chi

Development of a binary classifier model from extended facial codes toward video-based pain recognition in cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES: The Automatic Pain Assessment (APA) relies on the exploitation of objective methods to evaluate the severity of pain and other pain-related characteristics. Facial expressions are the most investigated pain behavior features for APA. We constructed a binary classifier model for discriminating between the absence and presence of pain through video analysis. METHODS: A brief interview lasting approximately two-minute was conducted with cancer patients, and video recordings were taken during the session. The Delaware Pain Database and UNBC-McMaster Shoulder Pain dataset were used for

Neuroanatomical correlations of visuospatial processing in primary progressive aphasia.

Clinical phenotyping of primary progressive aphasia has largely focused on speech and language presentations, leaving other cognitive domains under-examined. This study investigated the diagnostic utility of visuospatial profiles and examined their neural basis among the three main primary progressive aphasia variants. We studied the neuropsychological performances of 118 primary progressive aphasia participants and 30 cognitively normal controls, across 11 measures of visuospatial cognition, and investigated their neural correlates via voxel-based morphometry analysis using visuospatial compo

Risk of progressive hearing loss in untreated superior semicircular canal dehiscence.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with incidental or minimally symptomatic superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) are usually observed, without surgical repair. However, it remains unknown whether a labyrinthine fistula of the superior semicircular canal is associated with progressive conductive or sensorineural hearing loss over time. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review at two tertiary care academic referral centers. METHODS: Adults analyzed were diagnosed with SSCD by high-resolution temporal bone computed tomography and vestibular evoked myogenic potential testing and observed with a minimum of t

Protocol for a validation study of the translated stapesplasty outcome test 25 for measurement of disease-specific quality of life in Dutch patients with otosclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Otosclerosis is a common cause of acquired conductive hearing loss and can be treated using hearing aids or surgically. Surgical success rates or surgical results are usually reported using pure-tone audiometric thresholds and/or speech discrimination scores. Audiometric results and patient-reported quality of life after stapes surgery do not seem to correlate well. It is therefore our opinion that health-related quality of life measurements should be implemented as an additional outcome measure after stapes surgery. So far, there is a lack of a valid, reliable and clinically fea

Analysis of vocal fold function from acoustic data simultaneously recorded with high-speed endoscopy.

SUMMARY: Acoustic and endoscopic voice assessments are routinely performed to determine the vocal fold vibratory function as part of the voice assessment protocol in clinics. More often than not these data are separately recorded, resulting in information being obtained from two different phonation segments and an increase of time for the voice evaluation process. This study explores the use of acoustic data, simultaneously recorded during high-speed endoscopy (HSE), for the evaluation of vocal fold function. PATIENTS AND METHODS: HSE and acoustic data were recorded from the subjects simultan
