Language ability in children with permanent hearing impairment: the influence of early management and family participation.

OBJECTIVE: The goal was to examine the relationships between management after confirmation, family participation, and speech and language ou … Family Participation Rating Scale scores showed significant positive correlations with language and speech intelligibility scores only for those with confirmation after 9 months and were highest for those with late confirmed, severe/profound, permanent childhood hearing impairment. CONCLUSIONS: Early management of permanent childhood hearing impairment results in impro …

Tipping the Scales: Indiscriminate Use of Interval Scales to Rate Diverse Dysarthric Features.

PURPOSE: Error related to incorrect use of rating scales is problematic in the assessment and treatment of dysarthria. The main purpose of this project was to determine scale fit for cardinal speech features of hypokinetic dysarthria. A secondary aim was to determine rater reliability for the two different scales explored. METHOD: Forty-three speakers with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 25 neurologically healthy control talkers were recorded reading sentences from the Speech Intelligibility Test. Twenty-two healthy female listeners used both an equal appearing interval (EAI) scale and a direct …

A follow-up study of children with phonologic disorders of unknown origin.

Recent emphasis on early intervention programming for children with speech delays of unknown origin has yielded considerable literature on alternative forms of assessment and management. Less is known about the long-term special educational needs of such children. This study reviews the exceptional educational needs histories of 36 children who had received preschool speech services at a phonology clinic. Findings indicate that a high percentage of children continued to have speech and language and other special educational needs as they neared middle school and beyond. Many children eventuall

A Laboratory Evaluation of Contextual Factors Affecting Ratings of Speech in Noise: Implications for Ecological Momentary Assessment.

OBJECTIVES: As hearing aid outcome measures move from retrospective to momentary assessments, it is important to understand how contextual factors influence subjective ratings. Under laboratory-controlled conditions, we examined whether subjective ratings changed as a function of acoustics, response timing, and task variables. DESIGN: Eighteen adults (age 21 to 85 years; M = 51.4) with sensorineural hearing loss were fitted with hearing aids. Sentences in noise were presented at 3 overall levels (50, 65, and 80 dB SPL) and 3 signal to noise ratios (0, +5, and +10 dB signal to noise ratio [SNR

On the Benefits of Speech-Language Therapy for Individuals Born With Cleft Palate: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Individual Participant Data.

PURPOSE: Cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) is a common birth defect, and after reconstructive surgery, about 50% of children at 5 years of age have speech deviations and are referred to speech-language therapy (SLT). The peer-reviewed evidence for the benefit of SLT has been uncertain. Our objective was to systematically review and meta-analytically summarize the benefit of SLT for individuals born with CLP. METHOD: A systematic search was conducted (last search on February 19, 2021) on studies evaluating SLT with pre and post measures on speech production, language ability, intelligibility, and/

Cluttering in a School-Aged Child: Tackling the Challenges Step by Step.

The purpose of this article is to highlight and provide solutions for the complexities of the communication disorder of cluttering. The article includes a 12-part case study of a school-aged child who is referred for an evaluation due to decreased speech intelligibility. The case is woven throughout the article to illustrate all aspects of client management: initial referral, evaluation and differential diagnosis, treatment, and discharge. The case reflects the challenges of increasing client awareness and the importance of advocating for client's needs throughout the process. This article pro…

ParkinSong Online: protocol for a telehealth feasibility study of therapeutic group singing for people with Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease can be associated with speech deterioration and low communication confidence which in turn compromises social interaction. Therapeutic singing is an engaging method for combatting speech decline; however, face-to-face delivery can limit access to group singing. The aim of this study is to test the feasibility and acceptability of an online mode of delivery for a Parkinson's singing intervention (ParkinSong) as well as remote data collection procedures. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This ParkinSong Online feasibility trial is a single-arm, pre-post study of online sin

Prosodic Improvement in Persons with Parkinson Disease Receiving SPEAK OUT!® Voice Therapy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Hypokinetic dysarthria in Parkinson disease (PD) hinders the ability to verbally communicate and interferes with activities of daily living. SPEAK OUT!® is a therapy program designed to improve functional communicative ability. In contrast to the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment program, SPEAK OUT!® promotes speaking with intent to effect loud speech. This study evaluated the efficacy of SPEAK OUT!® in persons with idiopathic PD in 3 domains: self-reported voice handicap, clinical ratings of dysarthria and prosody, and acoustic analysis of prosody. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Pre-

Long-Term Auditory and Speech Outcomes of Cochlear Implantation in Children with IP-I Malformation.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the long-term auditory and speech outcomes in children with Incomplete Partition Type I (IP-I) who underwent cochlear implantation (CI) and compared their progress to implanted children with normal cochlea. METHODS: This study tracked 17 children with IP-Ι for an average of 3.5 years post-implantation. A control group with normal cochlea was also tracked. Regular assessments, including aided hearing threshold, categories of auditory performance (CAP), and speech intelligibility rating (SIR), were conducted every 6 months for the first 2 years post-C…

Patients with secondary healing demonstrated a higher rate of hypernasality and worse speech intelligibility. In addition, those with dehiscence size larger than 1cm2 demonstrated significantly higher rate of VPI than those less than 1cm2. Mental well-being, emotional-cognitive processing, and attention skills in individuals with cluttering.

BACKGROUND: Cluttering is a fluency disorder marked by a rapid and irregular speech rate and articulation difficulties such as "slurred" speech and sound omissions. These speech disruptions reduce intelligibility and negatively impact communication. Treatment for individuals with cluttering typically focuses on improving their speech clarity and fluency. In contrast, while addressing speech disruptions, treatment for stuttering, a related fluency disorder, extends to include psychological and emotional aspects. This broader approach is based on research linking stuttering to mental health indi

AIM: The aim of this study was to establish the construct validity of the Focus on the Outcomes of Communication Under Six (FOCUS(©) ),a tool designed to measure changes in communication skills in preschool children. METHOD: Participating families' children (n=97; 68 males, 29 females; mean age 2y 8mo; SD 1.04y, range 10mo-4y 11mo) were recruited through eight Canadian organizations. The children were on a waiting list for speech and language intervention. Nasalance in Cochlear Implantees.

OBJECTIVES: Speech intelligibility is severely affected in children with congenital profound hearing loss. Hypernasality is a problem commonly encountered in their speech. Auditory information received from cochlear implants is expected to be far superior to that from hearing aids. Our study aimed at comparing the percentages of nasality in the speech of the cochlear implantees with hearing aid users and also with children with normal hearing. METHODS: Three groups of subjects took part in the study. Groups I and II comprised 12 children each, in the age range of 4-10 years, with prelingual b…
