Understanding Dysphagia Care in the Community Setting.

Factors including health policy reform and the aging population are increasing demand for quality healthcare in the community. People with d … groups and a few SLPs incorporated social participation or client well-being aspects in treatment. Speech-language pathology (SLP) practices in the community appear similar to what occurs in the acute setting, which are inherently biomedical. This may not be optimal care for clients with dysphagia who live at home and their caregivers. Further exploration about what clien …

Recent trends in telerehabilitation of stroke patients: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the main reason for disabilities worldwide leading to motor dysfunction, spatial neglect and cognitive problems, aphasia, and other speech-language pathologies, reducing the life quality. To overcome disabilities, telerehabilitation (TR) has been recently introduced. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to analyze current TR approaches for stroke patients' recovery. METHODS: We searched 6 online databases from January 2018 to October 2021, and included 70 research and review papers in the review. We analyzed TR of 995 individuals, which was delivered synchronously and

New patterns of pathological language mixing in bilingual aphasia.

BACKGROUND: A central challenge in bilingual aphasia research is the absence of clear markers that distinguish pathological language mixing (PLM) from mixing used as a compensatory mechanism, leaving ongoing debates unresolved. Also, prior work suggests that PLM occurs primarily during retrieval of open-class words and increases with utterance length during structured tasks, yet these findings, and the hesitation behaviors accompanying PLM, remain largely untested in spontaneous speech. METHOD: This study examines PLM in Patient P3, a 59-year-old female bilingual speaker of Spanish and Englis

Variability in Interpreting "Educational Performance" for Children With Speech Sound Disorders.

PURPOSE: Speech sound disorders (SSDs) can have a negative impact on literacy development, social-emotional well-being, and participation across the life span. Despite this, many public schools do not provide appropriate or timely services to this population of children. In large part, this is a result of variation in how state and local agencies interpret "educational performance" as outlined within the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act. The purpose of this study was to explore which educational performance factors speech-language pathologists (SLPs) consider when determining eligib

Australian speech pathologists' views of what professional practices lead to successful outcomes of therapy.

The relative importance attributed to factors perceived by speech pathologists as contributing to successful levels of therapeutic outcomes were addressed in a survey of 372 practicing therapists in Australia. The survey consisted of 42 items derived from interviews with a sample of ten speech pathologists in Sydney. Therapists were asked to rate the importance of each item on a seven-point scale ranging from "not at all important" to "critically important." The findings indicate that the most important ingredients of successful therapy incorporate a mix of support and therapeutic activity out

Speech-Language Clinicians Working with Deaf Children: A Qualitative Study in Context.

Students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) increasingly attend local public schools, in which speech and language clinicians (SLCs) may lack experience with the individualized needs of a heterogeneous student population. This study explored the experiences of SLCs with students who are DHH in three different types of educational settings. Fourteen SLCs were interviewed and discussed a case study. Responses were transcribed, data coded, and emergent themes identified. Analysis was verified through triangulation of data and trustworthiness strategies. Results indicated that the skill sets of

Nonfluent/agrammatic PPA with in-vivo cortical amyloidosis and Pick's disease pathology.

The role of biomarkers in predicting pathological findings in the frontotemporal dementia (FTD) clinical spectrum disorders is still being explored. We present comprehensive, prospective longitudinal data for a 66 year old, right-handed female who met current criteria for the nonfluent/agrammatic variant of primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA). She first presented with a 3-year history of progressive speech and language impairment mainly characterized by severe apraxia of speech. Neuropsychological and general motor functions remained relatively spared throughout the clinical course. Voxel-bas

Swallowing, speech and voice impairments in head and neck cancer patients treated at a multidisciplinary integrated patient unit.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancer (HNC) is amongst the 10 most common cancers worldwide and has a major effect on patients' quality of life. Given the complexity of this unique group of patients, a multidisciplinary team approach is preferable. Amongst the debilitating sequels of HNC and/or its treatment, swallowing, speech and voice impairments are prevalent and require the involvement of speech-language pathologists (SLPs). In 2018, an integrated patient unit (IPU) for HNC patients was established which includes healthcare professionals from diverse fields including SLPs. AIMS: To characteri

[Diagnosis and therapy of auditory synaptopathy/neuropathy].

Pathological auditory brainstem responses (lack of responses, elevated thresholds and perturbed waveforms) in combination with present otoacoustic emissions are typical audiometric findings in patients with a hearing impairment that particularly affects speech comprehension or complete deafness. This heterogenous group of disorders first described as "auditory neuropathy" includes dysfunction of peripheral synaptic coding of sound by inner hair cells (synaptopathy) and/or of the generation and propagation of action potentials in the auditory nerve (neuropathy). This joint statement provides pr
