Feline sporotrichosis is a zoonotic subcutaneous mycosis often associated with high fungal burden and therapeutic challenges. This report describes two cases of feline sporotrichosis, caused by Sporothrix brasiliensis, unresponsive to itraconazole that were successfully managed using electroporation as an adjunctive local therapy. Both cats presented ulcerative and proliferative lesions with poor response to prolonged antifungal treatment. Electroporation was performed under general anesthesia using needle electrodes and square-wave electric pulses. Progressive reduction in lesion size, decrea…

A 63-year-old Thai woman, owner of 14 cats, presented with chronic skin lesions initially misdiagnosed as cellulitis. Further investigation revealed lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis caused by Sporothrix schenckii. Histopathology of one lesion unexpectedly demonstrated pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia (PEH), a reactive epidermal proliferation that can clinically and histopathologically mimic squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The patient was treated with itraconazole for the fungal infection, and surgical debridement was performed due to suspicion of malignancy. Diagnostic tools included fungal cult…

Infections of deep soft tissues with the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii are uncommon in humans, and therapy has often required toxic drugs. We report our experience in treating 11 patients who had deep-seated sporotrichosis with ketoconazole, a well-tolerated, orally absorbed antifungal agent. Eight infections involved one or more joints, and three involved thoracic, cervical, and widespread cutaneous sites, respectively. For eight patients all evidence of infection resolved during therapy. Sustained remissions (6 months to 5 years) were noted for six patients after the discontinuation …

Nodular lymphangitis, also known as lymphocutaneous syndrome or sporotrichoid lymphangitis, presents with inflammatory nodules along the lymphatic vessels, typically involving the upper or lower extremities. Although the most common cause of nodular lymphangitis is infection due to Sporothrix schenckii, Nocardia brasiliensis, Mycobacterium marinum, or Leishmania braziliensis, it is important for clinicians to be aware of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus as a rare cause of nodular lymphangitis and perform gram stain, bacterial culture, and antibiotic sensitivity profiles when appropr…

Sporotrichosis is a chronic granulomatous fungal infection caused by Sporothrix schenckii. Inoculation of the fungus through breached skin or mucosa typically results in nodular ulceration of the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue as well as its draining lymphatic nodules. However, reports on ocular involvement have recently increased. We describe a severe case of diffuse granulomatous conjunctivitis involving bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva, resulting in inevitable damage to the limbal stem cells. Isolation of S. schenckii from a conjunctival swab confirmed the diagnosis of sporotrichosis. A …

Sporotrichosis is the most common implantation mycosis caused by several species of the Sporothrix schenckii complex. The gold standard for diagnosis is concerned with the isolation of the fungus; although, fresh examinations, staining, and biopsies are also helpful for this purpose. The sporotrichin is an antigenic complex comprised of a peptide-rhamnomannan, which is relevant with respect to pathogenic fungi; it is primarily used for serological and skin testing. We present a study regarding the use of sporotrichin as a diagnostic aid for cutaneous sporotrichosis. Furthermore, 138 cases with…

Sporotrichosis in an uncommon mycoses in childhood and is generally associated with injuries received as a consequence of farm work. We unde … disseminated cutaneous form. Most lesions were located on the upper limbs (40%) and the face (36%). Sporothrix schenckii was isolated in all patients and 24 of 25 had a positive sporotrichin skin test. Nineteen patients were treated and cured clinically and mycologically with potassium iodide, three were cured with itraconazole and one with heat therapy.

A male patient with HIV and past history of tuberculosis and suspected neurotoxoplasmosis was admitted to the hospital with vomiting and small nodules through all his body. Few of the nodules were found forming chains of enlarged lymphatic vessels, especially on lesions located on the limbs. Some of the nodules were ulcerated with a serosanguineous discharge. Collected samples from ulcerated and the nodular lesions showed the presence of Sporothrix schenckii in culture. Although all hemocultures were negative, a spinal fluid collected from this patient and cultures from the cutaneous lesions w…

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is an infection caused by Sporothrix schenckii . It primarily involves the skin and lymphatic channels, but dissemination may occur.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to describe clinical and epidemiologic features of cases of sporotrichosis observed in southern Brazil, and to review the literature. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of medical records over a 35-year period, from 1967 to 2002.
RESULTS: In all, 304 cases of sporotrichosis confirmed by fungal culture, histopathologic examination, and/or remission of lesions with potassium iodide were reviewed. No stati…

BACKGROUND: To date the direct fresh examination has not been considered, except by a few authors, as a valid laboratory procedure for the d … ol and cicloheximide were made in all cases.
RESULTS: Direct, fresh examination asteroid bodies of Sporothrix schenckii were found in 85.7% of the cases, which allowed the authors to immediately diagnose the disease. Cultures confirmed the diagnosis in 95.2% of the patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Fastness, simplicity and low cost of the fresh examination lead us to …

Six cases of pulmonary sporotichosis were observed in 2 institutions in Oklahoma City, Okla. Three of the patients were treated with iodides with or without surgery. Although one patient required a second course of iodides, the patients have remained well after at least 34 months of follow-up. Three patients treated with amphotericin B, single course as well as multiple courses, and other antifungal agents (hydroxystilbamidine and miconazole) have all relapsed. These cases and a reviewed of more than 40 cases of pulmonary sporotrichosis susceptibilities of Sporothrix schenckii that we observed…

This study aims to report the number of animal cases identified in the central-south region of Paraná. It also seeks to correlate these findings with human diagnoses, thereby underscoring the importance of the One Health approach in implementing prophylactic measures and protocols for evaluating both positive and suspected cases. In August 2023, a cat diagnosed with sporotrichosis was presented at the UNICENTRO Veterinary School Clinic. Accompanying the cat was its guardian, who exhibited characteristic lesions of the disease. An epidemiological study was then initiated and spanned from August

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by various sporothrix fungus species. This ubiquitous fungal infection is more commonly seen in field/farm workers in tropical and subtropical regions. This prevalence could largely be attributed to the climatic condition favorable for harboring fungi in these regions. Cutaneous infection often occurs via inoculation of fungus into the intact skin owing to traumatic skin injuries. Clinically apparent lesions can occur anywhere in exposed part of the body and mostly these occur over upper extremities, which are prone to trauma during f…
