Retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase injected ipsilaterally in several parts of the electric organ and light microscopy were employed to study motoneurons and electromotoneurons of the spinal cord in the weakly electric ray Raja clavata (Rajidae). We present a morphological follow-up in a case of familial hypokalemic periodic paralysis with progressive weakness. At age 12 years muscle biopsy revealed mild vacuolar changes. Seventeen years later, after the patient had developed permanent weakness, light and electron microscopy disclosed tubular aggregates in about 15% of the fibers and medium-grade myopathic alterations. We describe correlation of muscle pathology with permanent weakness in hypokalemic periodic paralysis.

Adherence of fluorescein sodium dye to diseased epithelial cells, a hitherto unreported phenomenon, was captured in photomicrographs in severe herpes zoster and keratoconjunctivitis sicca keratopathies. It is notable that this phenomenon differs completely from the well known fluorescent property of the dye penetrating into defective corneal epithelium, and that the staining pattern shown by adherent fluorescein correlates well with the staining pattern shown by rose bengal dye.

C.I. Solvent Red 23, commercial Sudan III, is widely used in cosmetic products. Chemical analyses and guinea pig sensitization tests were carried out to identify its contact allergens. In the Magnusson & Kligman guinea pig maximization test, C.I. Solvent Red 23 showed 20% positive reactions. We reviewed the histologic features of 105 cases of contact ulcers of the larynx. Despite its characteristic clinical findings and correlative histopathology, the appropriate diagnosis was suggested in only one case. Instead, a descriptive diagnosis was most often rendered. Silver-stained nucleolar organiser regions (AgNORs) were studied in 10 hyperplastic, 5 intra-epithelial neoplastic and 30 malignant prostatic lesions. Total AgNOR counts and types were compared with histological features. Campylobacter pylori infection was sought in 382 consecutive patients referred for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Five antral biopsy specimens were taken from each patient: one was inserted into a CLO-test to detect the urease activity of C pylori, two were sent for histological analysis where multiple sections were stained by the Warthin-Starry silver method, and two were sent for microbiological evaluation by Gram stain and culture. An immunoperoxidase method was used to detect involucrin in 47 odontogenic tumors and 35 radicular cysts. Of a total of 40 ameloblastomas, 9 cases were positive for involucrin expression and those positive cases exhibited acanthomatous or follicular patterns. A versatile mineralized bone stain (MIBS) for demonstrating osteoid seams and tetracycline fluorescence simultaneously in thin or thick undecalcified sections has been developed. Bone specimens are fixed in 70% ethanol, but 10% buffered formalin is permissible. Depending upon one's preference, these specimens can be left unstained or be prestained before plastic embedding. Early biochemical studies of ultraviolet (UV) irradiated human skin reported a loss of insoluble collagen with a concomitant increase in the soluble fraction. Recent work has described an early increase in type III collagen during chronic irradiation of hairless mice as determined by cyanogen bromide digests of whole skin. During an 8 month period, 298 evaluations of direct and buffy coat films of peripheral blood for the detection of bacteraemia were undertaken in 287 infants (243 less than 24 h of age and 55 aged between 2 days and 30 days). Bacteraemia was diagnosed by simultaneously drawn aerobic and anaerobic blood cultures. Two types of goblet cells are classically described in the literature as markers of intestinal or colonic metaplasia of the gastric mucosa. In addition to those, four types of vacuolated cells in the gastric mucosa are herein described. A form of idiopathic calcinosis cutis, subepidermal calcified nodule (SCN), recurred twice on the nasal ala of a healthy 6-year-old girl whose serum calcium and phosphorus levels were within normal limits. Basophilic granular material and numerous mast cells were present in the superficial dermis. The pathogenesis of SCN is uncertain, but the clinical and histologic features of this lesion are distinctive.

In a case of systemic mast cell disease with moderate bone marrow involvement, we studied the sensitivity of mast cell cationic dye-binding to formaldehyde fixation, as well as the mast cell ultrastructure, so as to determine whether these cells possess characteristics of mucosal mast cells.
