Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is a disease that usually affects infants and young children who lack the antibodies to Staphylococcus aureus toxins that adults have. It is caused by bacterial infection by group II S. aureus that produces toxins that cause exfoliation, bullae (blister) formation and redness of skin. In children mortality is low, but can be high in adults, who will usually have a serious underlying disease that makes them susceptible to infection (Kim, 2002; Ladhani and Joannu, 2000).

Lytic phages are a promising consideration to combat recalcitrant bacterial infections. To advance the possibility of using phage therapy in the clinical routine, standardized phage susceptibility testing methods are needed. Here, staphylococcal phage K was tested against 154 periprosthetic joint infection-associated Staphylococcus aureus isolates using a double overlay spot assay in technical and biological triplicates. Individual plaques were assessed using a morphology scoring system ranging from 0 (no plaques) to 4 (large, clear plaques), with scores ≥2 considered indicative of infectivity

Staphylococcus aureus is the principal causative agent of osteomyelitis, a serious bacterial infection of bone that is associated with progressive inflammatory damage. Bone-forming osteoblasts have increasingly been recognized to play an important role in the initiation and progression of detrimental inflammation at sites of infection and have been demonstrated to release an array of inflammatory mediators and factors that promote osteoclastogenesis and leukocyte recruitment following bacterial challenge. In the present study, we describe elevated bone tissue levels of the potent neutrophil-at

In order to correlate the immunomodulatory roles of homologous heat shock proteins with Mr 65 kD (HSP65) to skin diseases, antibody level to recombinant-HSP65 of Mycobacterium leprae was quantified with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in the sera of patients. In psoriasis, an insignificant increase was observed in anti-HSP65 IgG (0.111 +/- 0.053, mean +/- SD in 0D492 nm, n = 22), compared with a normal group (0.080 +/- 0.032, n = 9). However, psoriasis of acute guttate-type (PGA), which is often induced after tonsillar infection, showed a significant increase (0.178 +/- 0.032 n = 4,

PURPOSE: Over-the-wire exchange of tunneled dialysis catheters is the standard of care per K/DOQI guidelines for treating catheter-related bacteremia. However, Gram-positive bacteremia, specifically with staphylococcus species, may compromise over-the-wire exchange due to certain biological properties. This study addressed the effectiveness of over-the-wire exchange of staphylococcus-infected tunneled dialysis catheters compared with non-staphylococcus-infected tunneled dialysis catheters.
METHODS: Patients who received over-the-wire exchange of their tunneled dialysis catheter due to documen

Staphylococcus aureus remains a prominent cause of community- and hospital-acquired infection. This study reviewed 162 cases of S. aureus infection occurring in 120 adults who were hospitalized at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center and referred for consultation to the Infectious Disease Service. There were 37 cases of skin and soft tissue infection, 5 pyomyositis, 34 osteomyelitis, 13 septic arthritis, 19 pneumonia, 3 empyema, 5 pyelonephritis, 37 vascular infection, 3 epidural abscess, and 6 miscellaneous infections. Bacteremia was documented in 56 of 119 (47%) cases in which blood cultures we

OBJECTIVE: To study the incidence and outcome of systemic infections with methicillin sensitive (MSSA) and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections in Australasian neonatal nurseries.
METHODS: Prospective longitudinal study of systemic infections (clinical sepsis plus positive cultures of blood and/or cerebrospinal fluid) in 17 Australasian neonatal nurseries.
RESULTS: The incidence of early onset sepsis with S aureus, mainly MSSA, was 19 cases per 244 718 live births or 0.08 per 1000. From 1992 to 1994, MRSA infections caused only 8% of staphylococcal infections. From 1…

BACKGROUND: In 2004, an outbreak of the USA300 strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was identified in persons with histories of homelessness, illicit drug use or incarceration in the Calgary Health Region (Calgary, Alberta). A prevalence study was conducted to test the hypotheses for factors associated with USA300 colonization or infection.
METHODS: Participants were recruited at sites accessed by this marginalized population. Health care staff administered a questionnaire and collected crack pipes and nasal, axillary and skin infection swabs. Pipes and swabs were cult

UNLABELLED: A case of congenital staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) with fatal outcome in a premature infant is reported. An intrauterine infection with Staphylococcus aureus was probably the cause for the fulminant course of the disease. Despite adequate antibiotic treatment, the infant died within 24 h after birth because of respiratory failure.
CONCLUSION: Although rare, infection may occur in the perinatal period and SSSS may present within the first 24 h of life. In this situation, early administering of appropriate antibiotics is essential.

Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is usually considered a benign disease. Agranulocytosis developed in a young college student 14 days after the onset of IM. Fulminant staphylococcal pneumonia and bilateral pulmonary infarcts resulted, and the patient died 4 1/2 hours after admission to a hospital. Agranulocytosis secondary to IM may be more prevalent than previously thought. A review of the literature indicated that infection developed in 57.9% of the patients with IM and extreme neutropenia and 45.4% of the infected patients died.

Superantigens are microbial products, that may activate in a polyclonal way, a high number of T lymphocytes bearing a specific VB segment of TCR; the best characterized are staphylococcal and streptogenic toxins. In a review of the literature, we summarize the role of these superantigens in primitive vasculitis, specially in Kawasaki syndrome and Wegener's granulomatosis. This pathogenic model highlights the complex relations between infection and autoimmunity.

The perceived wisdom in orthopaedics precludes insertion of implants in cases of post-recent active joint sepsis. However, revision knee surgery after infected arthroplasty has now been recognised to be safe and efficacious in specialised centres. We illustrate the concept of using principles of revision surgery to successfully treat knees destroyed by primary staphylococcal septic arthritis.

We report a case of nosocomial fatal varicella infection in a 13-year-old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukemia complicated with staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. His underlying leukemia, immunosuppressive drugs, disseminated varicella, S. aureus colonization, and acute renal insufficiency were all contributing factors that were pathogenetically linked in the development of his generalized SSSS.

Erythema multiforme is said to be rare in childhood and especially in early infancy. Three infants, none older than 1 year, were seen with this condition; all showed typical clinical features. In one of the three infants, no distinctive etiological factor(s) could be found. One was suffering from congenital hepatitis (cause unknown) and another from a staphylococcal infection.

The microflora of normal skin in 16 patients with repeated staphylococcal and streptococcal skin infections was examined to determine whether abnormalities existed which would indicate a protective role for the indigenous flora against colonization by pathogens. Five sites-hands, feet, axilla, groin and back-were examined quantitatively and qualitatively and compared with a control group. Total populations of indigenous flora were significantly higher from patients with repeated skin infections of the back, axillae and feet. The frequency of isolation of different species from normal skin was

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a major cause of periprosthetic and other implant-associated orthopedic infections because of its ability to adhere to biomaterial surfaces and form biofilm. Tranexamic acid (TXA) is routinely used in arthroplasty to reduce perioperative blood loss; however, emerging evidence suggests that it may also modulate bacterial behavior and antibiotic activity. This study investigated the in vitro effects of TXA in combination with teicoplanin on planktonic growth and biofilm biomass formation in clinical Staphylococcal isolates. Clinical Staphylococcal isolates were eval

Pyomyositis is a pyogenic infection of skeletal muscle with abscess formation. It is a rare disease with nonspecific symptoms which requires a rapid diagnosis and treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging is considered the gold standard for early diagnosis and to rule out other etiologies. This article reports an atypical presentation of pyomyositis revealed by a toxic staphylococcal shock syndrome in an 8-year-old boy.

Life threatening complications can be caused by staphylococcal infection, even if they appear as a simple pustulosis, via hamatogenous dissemination. On the other hand the bacteria is able to penetrate the skin without pre-existing skin lesions and reach the adjacent soft tissue, as was the case with a 9 year old boy who had a contusion of the left shoulder and a consecutive life threatening septicemia.
