Behavioural correlates to the dopamine D-1 and D-2 antagonists.

The acute dopamine (DA) receptor blockade of neuroleptics can be demonstrated in mice by antagonism of stereotypies induced by the DA-agonist methylphenidate and in rats by antagonism of stereotypies induced by the DA-agonists amphetamine or apomorphine. Neuroleptics such as the thioxanthene, cis(Z)-flupentixol, the phenothiazine, fluphenazine, the butyrophenone, haloperidol and the benzamide clebopride are equipotent behaviourally as well as clinically. Also the D-1 receptor-antagonist SCH 23390 has the same pharmacological effects. In a series of experiments where the methylphenidate-induced

Comparative efficacy of various physical activity interventions on individuals with autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity is a promising non-pharmacological intervention for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but the most effective intervention regimen remains unclear. This study aimed to compare and rank the effects of different types and doses of physical activity on social communication, stereotyped behaviors, and motor skills in individuals with ASD, thereby providing theoretical guidance for physical activity-based interventions. METHODS: We searched Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, SPORTDiscus, PsycInfo and CNKI from

Impacts of Knowledge and Familiarity on Differences in Explicit Stigma and Implicit Biases Toward Autism Across France.

Autistic people frequently experience stigma that can be expressed whether consciously or unconsciously. This study examined how familiarity with autistic people, factual knowledge about autism, sociodemographic characteristics, and cultural value orientations relate to three facets of autism stigma: desired social distance, stereotypical beliefs, and implicit bias. French adults (N = 277) completed online measures of autism knowledge, familiarity, social distance, and stereotypes, a cultural orientation scale, and an Implicit Association Test assessing automatic evaluations of autism. Results

Effects of stigmatizing media coverage on stigma measures, self-esteem, and affectivity in persons with depression - an experimental controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Stigmatization of people with mental illness is still a significant problem even in Western society. Media is an important vector for public messaging that may lead to stigma (and potentially counteract it). There is an ongoing debate about the impact of news with potentially stigmatizing content on people with depression. This experimental study aimed at investigating the direct effects media reporting could have on people with depression, namely, higher levels of stigma attitudes and negative affect, as well as lower levels of self-esteem and positive affect. METHODS: Experiment

Feelings of stigmatization in patients with rosacea.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a chronic facial disease that may lead to feelings of stigmatization, which can negatively impact psychological and social well-being. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate different aspects of rosacea that could contribute to feelings of stigmatization. METHODS: An online survey of a representative sample of the adult population in the UK, France, Germany and US was conducted to identify patients with rosacea based on presence of three or more clinical features. RESULTS: Among the patients who completed the survey (n = 807), mean age at first sign/symptom

Hypomania in Bobble-Head Doll Syndrome: A Case Report of Surgically Treated Stereotypy and Hypomania.

A 22-year-old man was admitted with gradually aggravating stereotypic head movement with hypomania. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed a large suprasellar arachnoid cyst extending into the third ventricle, with obstructive hydrocephalus, characteristic of bobble-head doll syndrome. Endoscopic fenestration of the suprasellar arachnoid cyst was performed. Stereotypic head movement stopped immediately after surgery and hypomanic symptoms gradually improved within a month. During 4 years of follow-up observation without medication, neuropsychiatric symptoms did not relapse. We report our expe

Killin'em with kindness: "The porter" and Hemingway's racial cauldron.

"The Porter" brings us close to the nightmare plaguing white America's collective imagination during the 20th century's formative years, when white and black collided and racial definition conflated. Hemingway's piece about a young white boy, his father, and the African-American porter who serves them on an overnight train trip is an exploration of 20th century American race relations. Initially, Hemingway pushes the reader to see the world through the young boy's eyes, through the bifurcated lens of racial stereotype. But through the black porter's intervention, the reader comes to recognize

Behavioral effects of the aqueous extract of Guiera senegalensis in mice and rats.

Behavioral effects of the aqueous extract of Guiera senegalensis on the central nervous system of mice and rats were investigated. Spontaneous motor activity, pentobarbital sleeping time, amphetamine-stereotyped behavior, exploratory activity and performance on treadmills (rota-rod) were evaluated. The results revealed that the aqueous extract of G. senegalensis reduced spontaneous motor activity in mice, prolonged the duration of pentobarbital sleeping time in rats and attenuated amphetamine-induced stereotype behavior in rats. The extract also decreased exploratory activity in mice and had n

Behavioural subsensitivity induced by long-term administration of a low dose of haloperidol to rats.

This study examines the effects on open-field and stereotyped behaviour of rats of abrupt withdrawal from repeated treatment with a low (0.03 mg kg-1) dose of haloperidol. Single administration of this low dose of haloperidol significantly increased open-field locomotion without modifying apomorphine (0.5 or 2.0 mg kg-1)-induced stereotyped behaviour. Forty-eight hours after abrupt withdrawal from 0.03 mg kg-1 haloperidol (twice daily for 15 days) a significant decrease in locomotion frequency was observed, but no change was observed in apomorphine-induced stereotypy. Our results suggest that

Dyskinetic movement disorder among adults with mental retardation: phenomenology and co-occurrence with stereotypy.

We screened for the occurrence of dyskinetic and stereotypic movement disorders using item-independent screening protocols to determine whether these forms of movement disorder can be distinguished among adults with mental retardation. Stereotypies and dyskinesias were reliably distinguished in terms of topography. Tardive dyskinesia occurred in 18.2% of a cohort of individuals receiving chronic neuroleptic treatment. Stereotypic movement disorder was associated with increased dyskinesia scores and increased prevalence of tardive dyskinesia. Increased dyskinesia scores were also found for subj

The Rett and Rett-like syndromes: a broad concept.

Eight patients who satisfied the following three criteria: 1) autistic behavior, 2) mental retardation and 3) stereotypic hand movements were evaluated. Four patients fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for the Rett syndrome developed by representatives of the International Rett Syndrome Association and the Center for Disease Control, Atlanta, USA. The other four Rett-like patients were atypical in the sense that the manifestations were incomplete or psychomotor development throughout the first 6 months of life was abnormal or the disease was heralded by infantile spasms with transient stereotyp

[The effect of epiphyseal peptides on the dynamics of the circadian and minute motor biorhythms in rats].

Chronic administration of pineal peptide drug epitalamin (0.5 mg/kg for 5 to 10 days) modulated the rat circadian locomotor activity: the animals with low circadian rhythm amplitude were activated whereas the rats with an obvious circadian fluctuations were depressed. The epitalamine obviously decreased an apomorphine-induced stereotype at 13.00 hours rather than at 19.00 hours. The rhythmicity of the stereotype changed in different ways depending on the rat individual susceptibility. The drug decreased the number of 1-3-minute waves if it had been high initially, and increased it if slow fluc

Effects of an oral hygiene punishment procedure on chronic rumination and collateral behaviors in monozygous twins.

This study investigated the suppressive effects of an oral hygiene punishment procedure on the ruminative behavior of profoundly retarded monozygous twins. Rumination, fingers in mouth/tongue out, appropriate behavior, and stereotyped behavior were measured before and during treatment with oral hygiene. Treatment was introduced for each meal in succession across the twins in a multiple-baseline design. Results showed that the rate of rumination of both twins was dramatically reduced to very low levels and stereotyped behavior increased spontaneously with the introduction of oral hygiene. Maint

Influence of the dose of ketamine used on schizophrenia-like symptoms in mice: A correlation study with TH, GAD67, and PPAR-γ.

Schizophrenia is a chronic, debilitating mental illness that has not yet been completely understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of different doses of ketamine, a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, on the positive- and negative-like symptoms of schizophrenia. We also explored whether these effects are related to changes in the immunoreactivity of GAD67, TH, and PPAR-γ in brain structures. To conduct the study, male mice received ketamine (20-40 mg/kg) or its vehicle (0.9 % NaCl) intraperitoneally for 14 consecutive days. We quantified stereotyped behavior, the tim

Involvement of dopamine D3 receptor and dopamine transporter in methamphetamine-induced behavioral sensitization in tree shrews.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to establish a methamphetamine (METH)-induced behavioral sensitization model using tree shrews, as well as to measure the protein expression of the dopamine D3 receptor (D3R) and dopamine transporter (DAT). METHODS: Forty tree shrews were equally and randomly divided into four experimental groups: those administered with 1, 2, and 4 mg/kg METH and a control group (treated with an equal amount of normal saline). Each experimental group was repeatedly exposed to METH for nine consecutive days to induce the development of behavioral sensitization, followed by four d

Motor stereotypies in autism spectrum disorder: Clinical randomized study and classification proposal.

Motor stereotypies are one of the most frequent features in children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. They may disrupt children's functioning and development and be a potential source of stress for families. Several factors, including sex, age, cognitive ability, and severity of autism spectrum disorder, may influence the presence and intensity of stereotypies. The present study aimed to identify the prevalence of motor stereotypies in a group of children with autism spectrum disorder. In addition, it sought to investigate whether sex, age, cognitive ability, verbal language, neur

Descriptive Longitudinal Analysis of Stereotypy and Corresponding Changes in Psychotropic Medication.

INTRODUCTION: Psychotropic medication is often prescribed to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who engage in challenging and other behavior (e.g., aggression and stereotypy, respectively), but there is limited understanding of the effects of these medications on behavior. OBJECTIVE: Within the context of a larger study that evaluated the effects of psychotropic medication regimen changes on the presentation of challenging behavior, this study describes the presentation of stereotypic behavior of three individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. METHODS: St
