BACKGROUND: Complications after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery may be related to the type of surgical technique employed. One technique, the placement of a Roux limb stabilization suture, presumably prevents kink at the gastrojejunal anastomosis. Neonatal acute gastric volvulus is rare and often associated with diaphragmatic anomalies. Patients usually present with vomiting and respiratory distress, but excessive salivation, failure to pass a nasogastric tube beyond 20 cms and the presence of a space occupying thoracic lesion should also prompt a search for the entity. The authors describe a case presenting with these atypical findings and stress the importance of the plain radiograph chest to make a diagnosis.

Gastric volvulus usually occurs secondary to another condition such as hiatal hernia. We report a case of so-called "idiopathic' gastric volvulus where the only abnormality was laxity of the gastric attachments. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was unhelpful in making the diagnosis, but a barium meal clearly demonstrated the abnormality. The patient underwent a Polya gastrectomy with a retrocolic gastroenterostomy, which was thought to be the best method of ensuring gastric fixation.

Examination of case records of 914 military working dogs which died during the period January 1, 1987-December 31, 1989, revealed 31 deaths (3.4%) due to gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) or its complications. The fata episode of GDV was the only reported occurrence of this condition in 81% of the dogs. A rare case of intrathoracic gastric herniation resulting in intermittent gastric volvulus was observed in a 69-year-old female patient five months after left pneumonectomy for lung cancer. PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to review the records of all children who presented with gastric volvulus in the past 10 years.
METHODS: The study group consisted of 21 children with an age range from 0.2 months to 4.3 years who were operated for gastric volvulus from 1992 to 2003.

A new technique is described for a prophylactic incisional gastropexy via a right-sided grid approach (i.e., minilaparotomy). A pilot study showed comparable tensile strength between a traditional ventral midline approach and the grid approach. Six client-owned dogs were selected for the procedure.
