This study highlights the disparity between the prevalence of adult strabismus in the United States and the limited number of surgeons performing adult strabismus surgery on Medicare beneficiaries. Only 12.2% of pediatric ophthalmologists billed Medicare for adult strabismus procedures during the study period. Additionally, geographic disparities of surgeons performing adult strabismus surgery were evident, with drastically different surgeon-to-patient ratios by state. Overall, the study raises concerns about the adequacy of the surgeon supply to meet the demand for adult strabismus cases.

Scleritis is a rare complication of strabismus surgery. We present the case of an 11-year-old girl with Down syndrome who underwent strabismus surgery and developed bilateral symmetric nodular scleritis 3 weeks after surgery. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography revealed localized hyporeflective thickening of the sclera at the primary site of muscle insertion in both eyes. Treatment with topical and oral corticosteroids led to resolution of her condition.

INTRODUCTION: Strabismus/squint is an ocular misalignment in which the eyes are not properly aligned with each other. It is an avoidable cause of blindness and has a global prevalence which ranges from 2% to 6%. Knowledge of eye diseases is important in encouraging people to seek early treatment, which further helps in reducing the burden of visual impairment. Studies in Ethiopia showed that the level of good knowledge was 37%. There is a lack of information regarding knowledge and related factors of strabismus in the study area and limited in Ethiopia at large.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this stu…

This article presents a surgical technique using a pericardial patch for the permanent repair of severe scleral thinning encountered during strabismus surgery. In the present case scleral thinning resulted from buckle removal. Familiarity with this technique may prove important for the strabismus surgeon treating patients with a history of surface ocular hardware or disease-induced scleral thinning. This video article may be viewed atjaapos.org.

Periocular infection is a rare complication of strabismus surgery. We describe a case of necrotizing Tenon's capsule infection after uncomplicated strabismus surgery in a boy with Down syndrome and blepharitis. Pathologic diagnosis was severe acute necrotizing inflammation with Gram positive coccal forms. Resolution of infection occurred after surgical debridement and intravenous and topical antibiotics. Work-up revealed lymphopenia related to Down syndrome. Patients with Down syndrome may have risk factors for postoperative infection including blepharitis and immunologic abnormalities.
