Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a pivotal economic fish that has been plagued by Streptococcus infections. Tumor necrosis factor rec … of OnTRAF5 in intestine, gill and spleen were significantly higher than other tissues. While under Streptococcus agalactiae infection, the expression level of OnTRAF5 was improved significantly in all detected organs. Additionally, over-expression WT OnTRAF5 activated NF-κB, deletion of RING or zinc finger caused the activity impaired. In conclusion, OnTRAF5 participate …

Macrophage scavenger receptors exhibit unusually broad binding specificity for polyanionic ligands and have been implicated in atherosclerosis and various host defense functions. Using a radiolabeled, secreted form of the type I bovine macrophage scavenger receptor in an in vitro binding assay, we have found that this receptor binds to intact Gram-positive bacteria, including Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus hirae, and Listeria monocytogenes. Competition binding studies using purified lipoteichoic acid, an anionic polymer expressed on the su…

BACKGROUND: Group B streptococcus (GBS) remains a leading cause of infant sepsis, meningitis and death despite intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis. A vaccine is urgently required, and two candidates are in advanced clinical trials. For successful GBS vaccine implementation, especially if a vaccine is licensed based on an immunological threshold, there must be cross-sector engagement, effective advocacy, robust plans for phase IV studies and equitable access.
MEETING: A round-table discussion, held at St George's University of London, reviewed the current position of GBS vaccines in the UK cont

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B strep, GBS) infections in neonates are often fatal and strongly associated with maternal GBS vaginal colonization. Previously, we highlighted the importance of a formerly uncharacterized protein, BvaP, in GBS vaginal colonization. BvaP is highly conserved across GBS and is made up of repeated domains, with a variable number of repeats between strains. Here, we evaluate the prevalence of BvaP repeated domains and their relevance in phenotypes previously associated with vaginal colonization. Using in silico analysis, we found that the number of repeats in the Bv…

This is the first report on a population-based prospective study of invasive group B streptococcus (GBS) disease among children aged <15 years conducted over a period of 11 years in Japan. This study investigated the incidence and clinical manifestations of invasive GBS disease in children in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, and analysed the serotypes and drug susceptibility of GBS strains isolated during the study period. Overall, 127 episodes of invasive GBS disease were reported in 123 patients. Of these, 124 were observed in 120 patients aged <1 year, and the remaining three episodes were reported

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The classification of group B streptococcal (GBS) isolates is based on the capsular polysaccharides (Ia-VIII), and antigenic characterization of clinical isolates is augmented by the detection of various surface-localized protein antigens. In our laboratory, all GBS isolates are routinely analysed for the alpha trypsin-resistant and the beta trypsin-sensitive c protein antigens, as well as other trypsin-resistant proteins R1, R3, and R4, as well as BPS. The purpose of this work was to study diversity of protein expression in colonizing isolates (vaginal and rectal site

Sepsis and meningitis are the major clinical manifestations of group B streptococcal (GBS) infections in neonates, but GBS can cause a wide spectrum of presentations ranging from asymtomatic bacteraemia to fulminate septicaemia and shock. To our knowledge this is the first report of isolated neonatal lymphadenitis as a manifestation of late onset GBS disease.

We report the case of an infant in whom facial cellulitis was the only initial sign of a group B streptococcal bacteriemia. Adenitis-cellulitis syndrome is a rare clinical manifestation of group B streptococcal infection in infants. Local infection together with the onset of fever can be the only signs of bacteriemia in newborns and infants.

A survey of blood culture-confirmed neonatal septicaemia was carried out in seven delivery hospitals in 1981-85, for a second successive five-year period. The total number of cases was 377, to compare with 410 in the previous five-year period. Group B streptococcus (GBS) was throughout the major pathogen (29%), followed by Staphylococcus aureus (15%) and Escherichia coli (14%), while Staphylococcus epidermidis (10%) has emerged as a significant new causative agent. Septicaemia with very early onset was predominant: 49% of the cases had onset within the first 24 hours; in the majority the sympt

Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded jejunal, lymph nodal, and splenic tissues were obtained from four patients with Whipple's disease. Using antisera to a variety of bacteria, sections were stained by the immunoperoxidase technique. Positive staining was obtained with antiserum to streptococcus group B in all tissues examined. The distinctive pattern of staining was similar to the findings of previous workers using fluorescein-labeled antibodies. However, when rigorous controls for specificity were applied in this study, it was not possible to confirm the presence of streptococcus B antigen in t
