Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: Machine Learning for Biomarker Development.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) allows the in vivo imaging of pathological white matter alterations, either with unbiased voxel-wise or hypothesis-guided tract-based analysis. Alterations of diffusion metrics are indicative of the cerebral status of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at the individual level. Using machine learning (ML) models to analyze complex and high-dimensional neuroimaging data sets, new opportunities for DTI-based biomarkers in ALS arise. This review aims to summarize how different ML models based on DTI parameters can be used for supervised diagnostic clas

HIV-1/HBV Coinfection Accurate Multitarget Prediction Using a Graph Neural Network-Based Ensemble Predicting Model.

HIV and HBV infection are both serious public health challenges. There are more than approximately 4 million patients coinfected with HIV and HBV worldwide, and approximately 5% to 15% of those infected with HIV are coinfected with HBV. Disease progression is more rapid in patients with coinfection, which significantly increases the likelihood of patients progressing from chronic hepatitis to cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma. HIV treatment is complicated by drug interactions, antiretroviral (ARV) hepatotoxicity, and HBV-related immune reconditioning and inflamma

Machine learning and blood pressure.

Machine learning (ML) is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) based on pattern recognition. There are different forms of supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms that are being used to identify and predict blood pressure (BP) and other measures of cardiovascular risk. Since 1999, starting with neural network methods, ML has been used to gauge the relationship between BP and pulse wave forms. Since then, the scope of the research has expanded to using different cardiometabolic risk factors like BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio in concert with BP and its various pharmaceutic

Delineating Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease and Comorbid Risk With Clinical, Blood and Metabolomic Parameters-A UK Biobank Analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Ascertaining risk of and prognostication tools for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) remain suboptimal. Using the UK Biobank, we investigated the role of multivariate supervised learning in predicting MASLD risk and the presence of disease subgroups in stratifying the risk of comorbid outcomes. METHODS: Two ground truth definitions for MASLD were derived using magnetic resonance imaging-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) and electronic health records (EHRs). A training and validation set was created (60:40 split), using multiple imputa

Machine learning-based early detection of tuberculosis in asymptomatic high-risk populations.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge and continues to affect millions worldwide despite decades of control efforts. The disease can remain dormant and symptom-free for long periods, especially in high-risk populations such as household contacts, immunocompromised individuals and people living in crowded environments. Delayed detection of these silent cases fuels ongoing transmission. Chest X-ray imaging is widely used for screening, yet radiographic signs in early TB are subtle and easily confused with other lung conditions. Shortage of trained radiologists, subjective int

Comparative machine learning-assisted terahertz and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy for rapid authentication and quantitative assessment of adulteration levels in Chinese medicinal herbs.

Reliable authentication and quantitative assessment of adulteration levels in traditional Chinese medicinal herbs are essential yet remain analytically challenging due to their complex chemical profiles, morphological similarities, and frequent adulteration. Here, we comparatively evaluate ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), and their feature-level fusion combined with machine learning for rapid herbal authentication and adulteration-level prediction. Using Coptis chinensis as a representative target, the method was applied to three key anal

Osteoporosis prediction in primary Sjögren's syndrome: development and external validation of a machine-learning comparison model.

OBJECTIVES: Osteoporosis and fragility fractures are clinically important complications of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) that may accelerate functional decline and excess mortality. In practice, osteoporosis risk is often assessed using general-population tools that do not incorporate disease activity, glucocorticoid exposure or inflammation-related bone remodelling. We aimed to develop and externally validate a prediction model for DXA-defined osteoporosis in pSS using routinely available clinical and laboratory indicators. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 1000 patients w

Process identification and discrimination in the environmental dose rate time series of a radiopharmaceutical facility using machine learning techniques.

Multi-facility nuclear sites with research reactors have several environmental area gamma monitors in a network as a part of their surveillance capability. However, the routine release of low levels of 41Ar gas from the reactor is prone to interfere with the recorded gamma dose rate and mask the genuine processes being monitored at the network's central control room. As a potential solution, machine learning techniques have been used in this study to autonomously identify and discriminate the genuine processes, viz., the radioactive consignment loading and its movement, at an interim radiophar
