Augmentation of telemedicine post-operative follow-up after oculofacial plastic surgery with a self-guided patient tool.

PURPOSE: This study evaluates a web-based tool designed to augment telemedicine post-operative visits after periocular surgery. METHODS: Adult, English-speaking patients undergoing periocular surgery with telemedicine follow-up were studied prospectively in this interventional case series. Participants submitted visual acuity measurements and photographs via a web-based tool prior to routine telemedicine post-operative visits. An after-visit survey assessed patient perceptions. Surgeons rated photographs and live video for quality and blurriness; external raters also evaluated photographs. Im

Lymphatic Leaks of the Thigh and Inguinal Region: Combined Plastic Surgery Approaches for an Effective Treatment Algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Surgical procedures interfering with the draining nodes in the inguinal region carry the intrinsic risk of lymphatic complications. Lesions of the inguinal lymphatic network can lead to lymphocele or lymphocutaneous fistulas and can eventually be associated to limb lymphedema with consequent high morbidity. OBJECTIVES: This article describes a new surgical algorithm based on wound properties to properly address lymphatic complications of the inguinal area. Based on our experience, surgical solutions ranged from selective lymphatic vessel ligation to microsurgical lymphatic fistula

Knowledge and Skills Acquisition by Plastic Surgery Residents through Digital Simulation Training: A Prospective, Randomized, Blinded Trial.

BACKGROUND: Simulation is a standard component of residency training in many surgical subspecialties, yet its impact on knowledge and skills acquisition in plastic surgery training remains poorly defined. The authors evaluated the potential benefits of simulation-based cleft surgery learning in plastic surgery resident education through a prospective, randomized, blinded trial. METHODS: Thirteen plastic surgery residents were randomized to a digital simulator or textbook demonstrating unilateral cleft lip repair. The following parameters were evaluated before and after randomization: knowledg

Analysis of the Legal Effect of Settlement Agreements Prepared in Medical Litigation Following Plastic Surgery in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Settlements between doctors and patients provide a solution to complicated disputes. However, some disputes may be renewed as a result of negligence by both parties. The purpose of this study was to review the legal issues that may potentially arise during the preparation of settlement agreements and to propose a list of requirements for ensuring the effectiveness of these settlement agreements. METHODS: Data from 287 civil cases concerning aesthetic surgery that took place between 2000 and 2015 were collected from a court database in South Korea. Factors that influenced the effec

[Aesthetic/Plastic Surgery in Children as Seen from the Perspective of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy].

Physical deformities may cause psychological stress and lead to psychological disorders in children and adolescents. On the other hand, the correction of non-pathological conditions is a legal issue in patients unable to consent, a group that is partly made up of minors. This article provides an overview on available evidence on the psychological consequences of physical deformities, psychiatric contraindications for plastic surgery due to psychological disorders, and on the issue of minors' ability to consent.

Topography of the greater palatine artery and the palatal vault for various types of periodontal plastic surgery.

The purpose of the present study is to provide useful data that could be applied to various types of periodontal plastic surgery by detailing the topography of the greater palatine artery (GPA), looking in particular at its depth from the palatal masticatory mucosa (PMM) and conducting a morphometric analysis of the palatal vault. Forty-three hemisectioned hard palates from embalmed Korean adult cadavers were used in this study. The morphometry of the palatal vault was analyzed, and then the specimens were decalcified and sectioned. Six parameters were measured using an image-analysis system a

Optimal timing of acustimulation for antiemetic prophylaxis as an adjunct to ondansetron in patients undergoing plastic surgery.

We designed this study to evaluate the antiemetic efficacy of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation in combination with ondansetron when applied before, after, or both before and after plastic surgery. A randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study design was used to compare three prophylactic acustimulation treatment schedules: preoperative--an active device was applied for 30 min before and a sham device for 72 h after surgery; postoperative--a sham device was applied for 30 min before and an active device for 72 h after surgery; and perioperative--an active device was applied fo

Suture materials and other factors associated with tissue reactivity, infection, and wound dehiscence among plastic surgery outpatients.

The most common complications in plastic surgery are tissue reactivity, infections, and wound dehiscence. In the literature, there are only a few studies with sample sizes large enough and methods of statistical analysis appropriate for evaluating the role of suture materials in inducing such complications. In the 1000 plastic surgery outpatients in this study, the association of different suture materials, individual patient characteristics, surgeon skill, and wound site and length with postoperative wound complications (i.e., tissue reactivity, infection rate, and wound dehiscence) were inve

[Dynamics of the morphological changes in a colonic autotransplant during experimental plastic surgery of the cervical esophagus].

In the experiment on 16 dogs, the morphologic structure of a colonic autotransplant utilized for restoration of a total defect of the cervical esophagus was studied. A segment of the descending colon with terminal inferior mesenteric vein and ostium of the inferior mesenteric artery with a part of the aortic wall was used. Reformation of the intestinal epithelium was noted. By day 21 after the operation, a multilayer squamous epithelium was revealed in the intestinal autotransplant, in the muscular layer--structures of the forming neuromas. No esophageal stenosis was noted.

[Chronic fibular ligament insufficiency at the upper ankle joint. Late results after modified Watson-Jones plastic surgery].

The findings at clinical and roentgenological follow-up examination of 44 patients are reported to illustrate the long-term results of a modified Watson-Jones technique up to 90 months after the operation. The clinical results (86.3% of the patients without complaints and 88.6% with subjective stability of the ligaments) correspond with those given by a variety of sources in the literature. The roentgenological examination, on the other hand, showed signs of grade I or II arthrosis (Bargon scale) in 61.3% of cases, and arthrosis was worse than before the operation in nearly all cases. The pati

Lower-extremity Deep Vein Thrombosis after Plastic Surgery: Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes in a Retrospective Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a significant complication in plastic surgery, particularly affecting the lower extremities. Understanding the associated characteristics can aid in developing effective prevention strategies. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, quality improvement-oriented case series of 5 ultrasound-confirmed symptomatic postoperative lower-extremity DVT events after plastic surgery under general anesthesia at a single institution (January 2020-May 2024). Among 39,055 general anesthesia procedures during the study period, de-identified records were reviewed for p

Rapid Identification of Low-quality Meta-analyses in Plastic Surgery Using the Meta-analysis Critique (MAC) Tool.

Meta-analyses are the highest level of evidence within academic health literature. However, they vary significantly in quality and bias. Existing methodological assessment tools for meta-analyses are often time-consuming and difficult for clinicians to use. The "Meta-Analysis Critique" (MAC) Tool, was developed as a simple three-question screening instrument designed to quickly appraise study quality. We analyzed for temporal trends and correlations between the MAC Tool and the gold standard AMSTAR 2. MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched for plastic surgery meta-analyses published between 2011 and
