Using Perforated Liners to Combat the Detrimental Effects of Excessive Sweating in Lower Limb Prosthesis Users.

BACKGROUND: Excessive sweating of the residual limb has a substantial effect on the daily activities of people with lower limb amputation. Prosthetic liners offer protection and comfort to sensitive areas but often exacerbate perspiration. They act as insulators, trapping sweat on the skin's surface to the detriment of skin health. Recently, liners with perforations have been developed, allowing the moisture to escape. The goal of this study was to assess the impact of such liners. METHODS: A sample group of 13 patients with unilateral transtibial amputation, who wore a perforated liner (PL) …

Cutaneous vascular and sweating responses to intradermal administration of ATP: a role for nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase?

KEY POINTS: In humans in vivo, the mechanisms behind ATP-mediated cutaneous vasodilatation along with whether and how ATP increases sweating remains uncertain. Recent work has implicated nitric oxide synthase (NOS), cyclooxygenase (COX) and/or adenosine in the modulation of cutaneous vasodilatation and sweat production during both local (i.e. localized heating) and whole-body heat stress (i.e. exercise-induced heat stress). We evaluated whether ATP-mediated cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating is mediated via NOS, COX and/or adenosine. We show that in humans in vivo, intradermal administratio…

Commentary on ''dynamic analysis of histamine-mediated attenuation of acetylcholine-induced sweating via GSK3β activation''.

Matsui et al. (2014) delineate a novel pathomechanism for attenuated sweating in atopic dermatitis (AD). They provide evidence that acetylcholine-induced sweating can be inhibited via H1-receptor activation. This work suggests that H1 blockers may be useful in patients with AD.

An investigation into the effect of axillary surgery on ipsilateral axillary sweating--a pleasing 'complication' or a potential treatment for hyperhidrosis?

Although there had not been complaints of excessive sweating pre-operatively, it was noticed incidentally that a large proportion of patients who had undergone axillary lymph node sampling or clearance for breast carcinoma seemed to report ipsilateral sweat loss as a pleasing 'complication'. We interviewed 65 consecutive patients who had all had axillary dissections performed by the same surgeon's technique; the interviews were held 2-102 months after their operations. In 36 cases, patients reported no change in axillary sweating (mean 35 months), whereas 29 patients reported a decrease (mean …

BACKGROUND: Acetylcholine has been suspected to be a pathogenetic factor for cholinergic urticaria (CU), without definite evidence. In contr … icial acrosyringium. CONCLUSION: We think that such a hypohidrosis due to occlusion of superficial sweat ducts may also play a role in many other patients with CU of unknown etiology that becomes exacerbated in winter when sweating is not a frequent event.

Treatment of Frey's syndrome (gustatory sweating) and 'crocodile tears' (gustatory epiphora) with purified botulinum toxin.

PURPOSE: To determine whether purified botulinum toxin might be as effective in the treatment of "crocodile tears" (gustatory epiphora) as it has been in the treatment of other hypersecretion syndromes such as Frey's syndrome (gustatory sweating). METHODS: One patient with Frey's syndrome (gustatory sweating) was successfully treated with botulinum toxin. After this, two patients with chronic symptomatic crocodile tears (related to previous facial palsy) were treated with botulinum toxin injections into and around the lacrimal gland. RESULTS: Both patients reported remarkable relief from sym…

[Apocrine carcinoma of the breast--a morphologic comparison of the apocrine sweat glands and the apocrine metaplastic epithelia in mastopathy].

An operatively removed apocrine carcinoma of the breast from a 62-year-old Japanese lady has been observed by the ABC method, using the monoclonal antibody 115D8. The cancer cells and metaplastic epithelia exhibited similar ultrastructural findings (an apical snout, apocrine granules, etc.) as the apocrine sweat gland cells, although no evidence of apocrine secretion could be detected. The immunohistochemical testing, using monoclonal antibody, 115D8, showed an apical, linear, dot-like, staining in the supranuclear regions on the apocrine sweat gland cells and on the apocrine metaplastic cells…

Electrostatic interaction induced enhancement of conductive hydrogel for motion detection and targeted identification of ascorbic acid in sweat.

Multifunctional flexible sensors with applications in the fields of monitoring human motion and detecting ascorbic acid (AA) in sweat have received more and more attention. Carbon material-based hydrogels show great potential to construct multifunctional flexible sensors, while sensitive and selective detection of AA is still challenging. Herein, the tetraphenyl porphyrin@carbon fiber (TPP@CF) hydrogels were designed for enhancing identification of AA in sweat by an electrostatic interaction strategy. TPP is incorporated in CF to ensure the sensitivity of detecting AA. Hexadecyl trimethyl ammo…

A novel kinetic model estimating the urea concentration in plasma during non-invasive sweat-based monitoring in hemodialysis.

INTRODUCTION: The adequacy of hemodialysis (HD) in patients with end-stage renal disease is evaluated frequently by monitoring changes in blood urea concentrations multiple times between treatments. As monitoring of urea concentrations typically requires blood sampling, the development of sweat-sensing technology offers a possible less-invasive alternative to repeated venipuncture. Moreover, this innovative technology could enable personalized treatment in a home-based setting. However, the clinical interpretation of sweat monitoring is hampered by the limited literature on the correlation bet…

Ultrasound findings of endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma mimicking epidermal cysts: A case series and diagnostic challenges.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is an uncommon, low-grade, malignant tumor that predominantly affects older patients and is often located around the eyelids. Diagnosing EMPSGC is challenging because of its clinical and imaging similarities to benign lesions such as epidermal cysts. This report presents two cases of EMPSGC with ultrasound features resembling benign cystic lesions that were initially considered in the differential diagnosis. For both cases, ultrasound imaging revealed hypoechoic masses with posterior acoustic enhancement and peritumoral vascularity, whic…

Designing of multifunctional graphene quantum dot-polyvinyl alcohol-polyglycerol luminescent film for fluorescence detection of pH in sweat.

BACKGROUND: Wound infection, skin disease, renal failure, cancer, cystic fibrosis, and other pathologies may induce obvious pH changes in sweat. Thus, tracking skin pH changes can help monitor human health in a convenient manner. Owing to their biocompatibility, easy preparation, and sensitive response to pH changes, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have received increased attention in the optical detection of pH changes. However, their poor luminescent efficiency under visible light excitation and lack of functional diversification limit their application in skin pH monitoring. Therefore, the dev…

Sunscreen or simulated sweat minimizes the impact of acute ultraviolet radiation on cutaneous microvascular function in healthy humans.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Are ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced increases in skin blood flow independent of skin erythema? Does broad-spectrum UVR exposure attenuate NO-mediated cutaneous vasodilatation, and does sunscreen or sweat modulate this response? What are the main findings and their importance? Erythema and vascular responses to UVR are temporally distinct, and sunscreen prevents both responses. Exposure to UVR attenuates NO-mediated vasodilatation in the cutaneous microvasculature; sunscreen or simulated sweat on the skin attenuates this response. Su…

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma: a study of three cases and CK8, CK18 and CD5/6 immunoexpression.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma is a cutaneous adnexal tumor that is rarely reported in the literature. We identified only 29 previously reported cases. All these cases share some clinical morphologic and immunohistochemical features. Among the immunohistochemical markers, cytokeratins 5/6, 8 and 18 (CK5/6, CK8 and CK18) had not been previously studied in this tumor. Although studies with cytokeratin Cam5.2 exist, we know at present that this marker does not correspond to antibodies CK8/18, but rather to CK7 and CK8. We studied three examples of endocrine mucin-producing sweat …
