Spatial orienting of attention in dyslexic adults using directional and alphabetic cues.

Spatial attention performance was investigated in adults with dyslexia. Groups with and without dyslexia completed literacy/phonological tasks as well as two spatial cueing tasks, in which attention was oriented in response to a centrally presented pictorial (arrow) or alphabetic (letter) cue. Cued response times and orienting effects were largely similar in dyslexic and nonimpaired readers. The one distinct pattern that emerged showed dyslexic adults to have smaller orienting effects in the right than left visual field for letter cues, whereas typical readers showed the opposite pattern. Thes

Functional MRI and Wada studies in patients with interhemispheric dissociation of language functions.

Rare patients with chronic epilepsy show interhemispheric dissociation of language functions on intracarotid amobarbital (Wada) testing. We encountered four patients with interhemispheric dissociation in 490 consecutive Wada language tests. In all cases, performance on overt speech production tasks was supported by the hemisphere contralateral to the seizure focus, whereas performance on comprehension tasks was served by the hemisphere with the seizure focus. These data suggest that speech production capacity is more likely to shift hemispheres than is language comprehension. Wada and fMRI lan

Motor inhibition and cognitive flexibility in obsessive-compulsive disorder and trichotillomania.

OBJECTIVE: Problems with inhibiting certain pathological behaviors are integral to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trichotillomania, and other putative obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. The authors assessed and compared motor inhibition and cognitive flexibility in OCD and trichotillomania for the first time, to their knowledge. METHOD: The Stop-Signal Task and the Intradimensiona/Extradimensional Shift Task were administered to 20 patients with OCD, 17 patients with trichotillomania, and 20 healthy comparison subjects. RESULTS: Both OCD and trichotillomania showed impaired inhib

Aging and episodic memory specificity: Evidence challenging a domain-general pattern separation decline.

Aging is associated with a decline in episodic memory specificity. This phenomenon has been observed across various memory tasks, such as the Mnemonic Similarity Task (MST), where older adults show a heightened tendency to falsely recognize perceptually similar items. While many studies suggest this impairment reflects a generalized reduction in pattern separation, others indicate that older adults may exhibit preserved discrimination abilities for semantic representations. Furthermore, pattern separation accounts also posit that a bias toward pattern completion, a process whereby partial cues

Prefrontal cortex VAMP1 gene network moderates the effect of the early environment on cognitive flexibility in children.

During development, genetic and environmental factors interact to modify specific phenotypes. Both in humans and in animal models, early adversities influence cognitive flexibility, an important brain function related to behavioral adaptation to variations in the environment. Abnormalities in cognitive functions are related to changes in synaptic connectivity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), and altered levels of synaptic proteins. We investigated if individual variations in the expression of a network of genes co-expressed with the synaptic protein VAMP1 in the prefrontal cortex moderate the e

Guided corticomuscular neuroplasticity for restoration of wrist-hand function post-stroke.

BACKGROUND: After stroke, maladaptive neuroplasticity often presents as excessive recruitment of contralesional motor areas and the adoption of proximal compensatory movement patterns, both of which hinder the recovery of fine wrist–hand control. To address these limitations, this study introduces a guided corticomuscular neuroplasticity training strategy aimed at selectively enhancing ipsilesional cortical control during targeted muscle activations, thereby facilitating precise wrist–hand motor restoration. METHODS: A corticomuscular coherence (CMC)- and electromyography (EMG)-driven control

A distracted driver behavior typology: The role of regulatory environments.

Distracted driving is a recognized pedestrian safety risk, yet behavioral heterogeneity within distraction periods remains poorly characterized. We analyze 39,271 one-second observations from 720 naturalistic crosswalk traversals (162 drivers, SHRP2 NDS, 2008-2013) using a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) pipeline. Five kinematic states form a near-sequential deceleration cascade, with nondriving-related task (NDRT) engagement concentrated in low-demand states. Monte Carlo cross-validation identified two driver profiles distinguished not by distraction frequency, whic

Flexible working memory in the human peripheral nervous system.

Working memory (WM) representations that are distributed across the brain can be flexibly recruited to best guide behavior.1,2,3,4 For instance, information may be represented relatively more strongly in the visual cortex when a WM task requires fine visual detail or more strongly in the motor cortex when a specific response can be prepared.5,6,7,8,9,10 If WM drives goal-oriented actions, we might also expect such task-dependent signals to propagate to the peripheral effectors that realize WM commands. Oculomotor signatures such as gaze biases can track simple visuo-spatial WM features,11,12 b

Do semantic and phonological categories lead to proactive interference in immediate and delayed serial recall tasks?

Proactive interference (PI) has received considerable attention in research on working memory (WM), but empirical findings have been mixed. The present study examined whether this inconsistency may partly reflect the distinction between item and order memory. We hypothesized that PI would be more evident in item memory than in order memory and tested this hypothesis by applying item and order memory scoring methods to serial recall tasks. We also systematically manipulated two types of categories (semantic and phonological) and two recall tasks (immediate and delayed serial recall). For semant

Involving practice nurse and other assistant clinical staff members in the management of low back pain: A qualitative interview study from Danish general practice.

OBJECTIVES: Involving practice nurse and other assistant clinical staff members in providing information and education to patients with low back pain at follow-up appointments may release more time and improve care in general practice. However, this requires a shift in the division of tasks, and general practitioners' barriers and facilitators for this are currently unknown. The objectives were to explore general practitioners' experiences and perceptions of including assistant clinical staff members in the management of low back pain. METHODS: This is a semi-structured interview study in Dan

Changes in driving behavior and cognitive performance with different breath alcohol concentration levels.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the changes in driving behavior and cognitive performance of drivers with different breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) levels. METHODS: Eight licensed drivers, aged between 20 and 30 years, with BrAC levels of 0.00, 0.25, 0.4 and 0.5 mg/l performed simulated driving tests under high- and low-load conditions. Subjects were asked to assess their subjective psychological load at specified intervals and perform various tasks. The outcome was measured in terms of reaction times for task completion, accuracy rates, and driver's driving behavior. RESULTS: The effects

Health effects of gasoline exposure. I. Exposure assessment for U.S. distribution workers.

Personal exposures were estimated for a large cohort of workers in the U.S. domestic system for distributing gasoline by trucks and marine vessels. This assessment included development of a rationale and methodology for extrapolating vapor exposures prior to the availability of measurement data, analysis of existing measurement data to estimate task and job exposures during 1975-1985, and extrapolation of truck and marine job exposures before 1975. A worker's vapor exposure was extrapolated from three sets of factors: the tasks in his or her job associated with vapor sources, the characteristi

Modeling brain dynamics and gaze behavior: Starting point bias and drift rate relate to frontal midline theta oscillations.

Frontal midline theta oscillatory dynamics have been implicated as an important neural signature of inhibitory control. However, most proactive cognitive control studies rely on behavioral tasks where individual differences are inferred through button presses. We applied computational modeling to further refine our understanding of theta dynamics in a cued anti-saccade task with gaze-contingent eye tracking. Using a drift diffusion model, increased frontal midline theta power during high-conflict, relative to low-conflict, trials predicted a more conservative style of responding through the st

The big mixup: Neural representation during natural modes of primate visual behavior.

The primate brain has evolved specialized visual capacities to navigate complex physical and social environments. Researchers studying cortical circuits underlying these capacities have traditionally favored the use of simplified tasks and brief stimulus presentations in order to isolate cognitive variables with tight experimental control. As a result, operational theories about visual brain function have come to emphasize feature detection, hierarchical stimulus encoding, top-down task modulation, and functional segregation in distinct cortical areas. Recently, however, experimental paradigms

Has multiple trace theory been refuted?

Multiple trace theory (Nadel & Moscovitch, Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 1997, 7, 217-227) has proven to be one of the most novel and influential recent memory theories, and played an essential role in shifting perspective on systems-level memory consolidation. Here, we briefly review its impact and testable predictions and focus our discussion primarily on nonhuman animal experiments. Perhaps, the most often supported claim is that episodic memory tasks should exhibit comparable severity of retrograde amnesia (RA) for recent and remote memories after extensive damage to the hippocampus (HP

In vivo functional neurochemistry of human cortical cholinergic function during visuospatial attention.

Cortical acetylcholine is involved in key cognitive processes such as visuospatial attention. Dysfunction in the cholinergic system has been described in a number of neuropsychiatric disorders. Levels of brain acetylcholine can be pharmacologically manipulated, but it is not possible to directly measure it in vivo in humans. However, key parts of its biochemical cascade in neural tissue, such as choline, can be measured using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). There is evidence that levels of choline may be an indirect but proportional measure of acetylcholine availability in brain tissue.

When we like what we know--a parametric fMRI analysis of beauty and familiarity.

This paper presents a neuroscientific study of aesthetic judgments on written texts. In an fMRI experiment participants read a number of proverbs without explicitly evaluating them. In a post-scan rating they rated each item for familiarity and beauty. These individual ratings were correlated with the functional data to investigate the neural correlates of implicit aesthetic judgments. We identified clusters in which BOLD activity was correlated with individual post-scan beauty ratings. This indicates that some spontaneous aesthetic evaluation takes place during reading, even if not required b

Ventral extra-striate cortical areas are required for human visual texture segmentation.

A patient (HJA) with bilateral occipital lobe damage to ventral cortical areas V2, V3 and V4 was tested on a texture segmentation task involving texture bar detection in an array of oriented lines. Performance detecting a target shape was assessed as the orientations of the background lines had increasing orientation noise. Control participants found the task easier when the background lines had the same orientation or only slightly shifted in orientation. HJA was poor with all backgrounds but particularly so when the background lines had the same or almost the same orientations. The results s

Breathing New Life Into Small Object Detection With Detection-Oriented Rectification.

Small Object Detection (SOD) is fundamentally constrained by the inherent scarcity of visual cues in size-limited instances. This low-entropy nature frequently induces ambiguity and collapse in the learned feature space, critically undermining the efficacy of downstream tasks. Restoration-based methods offer a promising, albeit flawed, solution to this representational bottleneck. On one hand, they excel at recovering fine-grained details; on the other, their effectiveness is compromised by a reliance on synthetic corruptions that generalize poorly at inference, a problem compounded by the inh

How field of view impacts visual search strategies.

When searching for objects, our sensory resources are limited. According to the zoom lens model of attention, the visual system can flexibly adapt the size of the attentional spotlight applied to an array of items depending on task difficulty. When search tasks are relatively straightforward, attention can be distributed widely across space to process several items simultaneously. However, when discrimination becomes more difficult, the attentional spotlight constricts to concentrate resources to a limited area resulting in the processing of only one or very few items simultaneously at any one
