[Repeated rupture of the extensor tendons of the hand due to fluoroquinolones. Apropos of a case].

Fluoroquinolone toxicity on cartilages and tendons has been well known since 1983. Tendon inflammation or rupture has been described. Achilles tendon rupture is the most frequent complication but many other sites of tendon injuries have been reported. This article presents a case of rupture of extensor tendons of the hand in an elderly woman treated by fluoroquinolones. As far as we know, this site of tendon lesion has never been previously described. Histological examination of tendon injuries was possible after surgical treatment. Histological structures were similar to the classical descrip…

Traumatic injuries involving tendons of the distal limbs in horses: a retrospective study of 55 cases.

Fifty-five horses were presented to Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital between 1st of January 1980 and 31st of December 1989 for treatment of distal limb lacerations involving flexor tendons (n = 35) or extensor tendons (n = 20). Of the 35 flexor tendon lacerations, 11 horses were killed without treatment and 24 horses were treated. Twenty-two horses were included in determining outcome. Four (18 per cent) returned to their original level of use, nine (41 per cent) returned to limited riding, seven (32 per cent) returned to breeding or pasture soundness and two (9 per cent)…

[Significance of the preoperative status in the evaluation of results of the reconstruction of extensor tendons].

Since 1977, a new evaluation scheme that is simple to use and which provides more objective information than earlier plans has been employed for the assessment of the results of extensor tendon reconstruction. The results in the four groups were evaluated and given a prognosis in accordance with the newly developed scheme. This permitted not only a better differentiation of the value of the therapeutic procedures, but also allowed one to make prognostic predictions. The prognosis is also of particular importance during preoperative talks with the patient.

Left ventricular false tendons in children: prevalence as detected by 2-dimensional echocardiography and clinical significance.

During a 28-month period, consecutive 2-dimensional echocardiograms were reviewed to determine the prevalence of left ventricular (LV) false tendons, their associated anomalies and clinical significance. LV false tendons were found in 31 (0.8%) of 3,847 consecutive 2-dimensional echocardiograms. Of 31 LV false tendons, 30 passed longitudinally from papillary muscle to septum and 1 went from free wall to free wall. The 31 patients were aged 1 day to 15 years. Associated heart disease, most often ventricular septal defect, bicuspid aortic valve and coarctation of the aorta, was present in 48%, o…

Pathology of the skeleton and tendons of broiler chickens reared to roaster weights. II. Normal chickens.

Broiler chickens were raised to 74 days of age under different feeding and housing regimens. Conformation, growth plates and tendon strength were studied in clinically normal chickens of various ages. A change with age from slight valgus deviation of the metatarsal bones to varus deviation was recorded. Separation of the proximal femoral epiphysis from the femur on disarticulation of the coxofemoral joint was a common post-mortem artifact. It was more common in chickens on full feed than in chickens fed a restricted amount of feed. Two distinct growth-plate abnormalities were recognized. Dysch

Efficacy and safety of quadriceps tendon autograft versus bone-patellar tendon-bone and hamstring tendon autografts for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Quadriceps tendon (QT), bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB), and hamstring tendon (HT) autografts are widely used for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), but the optimal autograft choice remains controversial. This study assessed the treatment effects of QT versus BPTB and HT autografts for ACLR. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched for eligible studies published from inception until July 2022. Effect estimates were presented as odds ratios (OR) and weighted mean differences (WMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for

The Effect of a Novel Achilles Brace on Concentric and Eccentric Achilles Tendon Loading During Tendon Tear Mechanisms.

(1) Achilles tendon rupture is one of the most severe lower-limb injuries, frequently occurring during movements involving maximal dorsiflexion with the knee at near-full extension. Preventive strategies are crucial, particularly for athletes engaged in high-risk sports such as basketball. (2) In this work, we examined the effect of a novel Achilles brace on Achilles tendon loading during concentric and eccentric mechanisms associated with tendon rupture. (3) Twenty-eight young basketball players performed tests under two conditions: with the adaptive brace and without it (control). Participan

Injectable human tendon extracellular matrix via isopropanol-assisted delipidation and mild decellularization for tendon regeneration.

Tendon injuries remain a major clinical challenge due to their limited intrinsic healing capacity and the shortcomings of current treatment options. Extracellular matrix (ECM)-based approaches are promising; however, most clinically available injectable ECMs are xenogeneic, raising concerns about immunogenicity, pathogen transmission, and limited durability. Human-derived injectable ECMs have recently gained attention, yet conventional solubilization-based preparations often disrupt native architecture and compromise biological function. Here, we present an injectable decellularized human tend

Nano-layered tendon patch to orchestrate timely interactions between tendon stem/progenitor cells and macrophages.

Tendon regeneration remains limited by the unmet challenge of precisely controlling the intensity and duration of local inflammation, often resulting in scarred healing. Here, we present a novel, micro-thin, nano-layered patch that employs Layer-by-Layer (LbL) self-assembly for the precisely controlled release of small molecules, Oxo-M and 4-PPBP, to address this technical challenge. This novel combination of small molecules exhibits distinct functions in modulating the polarization of macrophages and the tenogenic differentiation of tendon stem/progenitor cells (TSCs). The customized, tempora

Case of Chronic Neglected Patellar Tendon Rupture Reconstruction Using Semitendinosus and Gracilis Tendon Autologous Graft.

INTRODUCTION: Patellar tendon rupture is an uncommon injury that may progress to a chronic or neglected state when initial diagnosis and treatment are delayed. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 17-year-old male who sustained a cut-laceration injury over the right knee that was sutured primarily elsewhere, following which he developed progressive instability and inability to actively extend the knee. Imaging revealed patella alta with a complete patellar tendon rupture. The patient underwent reconstruction using a modified Ecker's technique with semitendinosus and gracilis autografts passed

Bone-Anchored Tendon Autograft for Sutureless Digital Extensor Tendon Stabilization After Sagittal Band Injury.

Digital extensor tendon instability or subluxation occurs in the setting of a sagittal band injury, which allows the extensor to subluxate off the metacarpal head upon flexion at the metacarpophalangeal joint. This can cause painful snapping of the tendon and limit the initiation of active extension. Surgical tendon stabilization is appropriate for patients who fail initial nonoperative splint immobilization after acute injury or those with chronic tendon subluxation. Existing surgical techniques are limited by bulky subcutaneous repairs, reliance upon compromised tissues, and/or the need for

Biomechanical comparison of innovative suture techniques for repair of Achilles tendon rupture in a porcine flexor tendon model.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, evidence-based progressive rehabilitation protocols following the surgical treatment of Achilles tendon rupture have been shown to be safe and appear superior to more restrictive treatment regimens. These protocols mainly rely on early mobilization and weight bearing. To enable this during postoperative rehabilitation, a biomechanically stable surgical treatment must be ensured. Different solutions for suturing ruptured Achilles tendons are currently favored by orthopedic surgeons and have been investigated in the past, including promising further developments of…

Patellar Tendon Reconstruction Following Septic Arthritis: A Case Report of an Autograft Technique With Quadriceps Tendon Reinforcement.

Loss of the patellar tendon or the entire extensor mechanism is a rare but devastating complication of post-traumatic septic arthritis. Although both autografts and allografts are used for reconstruction, the combination of hamstring tendon autografts with quadriceps tendon reinforcement offers a reliable biological option to restore knee extension. We report the case of a 35-year-old man who developed complete patellar tendon loss following septic arthritis secondary to a heavily contaminated penetrating knee injury from a motorcycle accident. After infection control with aggressive debrideme

Ultrasound-Triggered Tendon-Bone Comb With Axially Graded Electrical Gradients for Tendon-Bone Interface Integration.

Loss of electrophysiological guidance from endogenous fibrous-channeled electrical conduction critically impairs repair of the injured tendon-bone interface (TBI). Clinical analysis indicates that the inconsistent efficacy of conventional electrostimulation (ES) therapy arises from the limited penetration depth and insufficient focusing capacity of electrical currents in biological tissues. In this study, we developed a tendon-bone comb, termed the gradient microneedle (GMN), to improve spatial precision of electrical-signal delivery through multiple independent channel units and thereby promo

Hybrid Achilles tendon repair with gastrocnemius fascia turn-down flap for fracture of ossified Achilles tendon.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Fractures of ossified Achilles tendons are rare and often associated with repetitive jumping and sprinting in young athletes. Although the exact cause of Achilles tendon ossification is unclear, prior trauma and surgery are common contributing factors. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old male recreational athlete experienced acute pain in his right heel after a football game. Imaging revealed two calcified fragments within the Achilles tendon (proximal: 3.0 × 1.0 × 1.0 cm; distal: 1.5 × 1.0 × 0.5 cm) and a 2.7 cm tendon gap. Surgical debridement and repair were perfo…

Transosseous Flexor Hallucis Longus Tendon Transfer for Large Achilles Tendon Defects: Surgery Technique and Outcome.

BACKGROUND: Operative management of chronic Achilles tendinopathy with large defects can be surgically challenging. Concerns exist regarding transosseous transfer of the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon because of the shortened lever arm of flexion and weakening of the big toe. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the 2-year outcome of transosseous FHL transfer for the treatment of large Achilles tendon defects. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 28 patients who underwent FHL transfer. The extent of the defect was measured with magnetic resonance imaging. Outcome parameters were the

Chronic Rectus Femoris Tendon Reconstruction with Combined Achilles and Peroneus Longus Tendon Allografts: A Case Report.

CASE: A 23-year-old man presented to the orthopaedic clinic with chronic thigh pain 5 years after a sprinting injury with weakness and deformity. He was found to have a distal rectus femoris tendon rupture with 20 cm of retraction. An onlay reconstruction was performed using peroneus longus and achilles allografts, and the patient regained full strength and range of motion 1 year postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Chronic ruptures of the rectus femoris tendon are poorly described in the literature. Retraction may require use of allograft tissue to improve extensor mechanism function. Although outco
